Devils and Blackhawks win to secure playoff positions

Sun Apr 1, 2012 12:10am EDT

(Reuters) - The New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks snapped up two of the remaining positions for the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs with victories on Saturday.

Martin Brodeur made 22 saves for his 119th career shutout to lead the Devils (45-28-6) past the Carolina Hurricanes 5-0.

New Jersey join the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers in having secured playoff positions in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago (44-26-9) rebounded from squandering a four-goal lead to edge the Nashville Predators 5-4 and qualify for the postseason for the fourth consecutive season.

The Blackhawks join the St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings and Predators in the Western Conference playoff picture.

There are three playoff positions still available in each conference with one week remaining in the season.

The Blackhawks' win over Nashville also handed the Blues their first Central Division title since 2000 despite their 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins clinched the Northeast Division with a 6-3 win over the New York Islanders.

Knicks brush off Lin blow to overcome Cavaliers
Apr 1st 2012, 03:17

Sat Mar 31, 2012 11:17pm EDT

(Reuters) - The New York Knicks overcame the bad news of Jeremy Lin's knee injury and persevered over the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers with a 91-75 win at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

The Knicks, already without Amar'e Stoudemire and clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, learned earlier on Saturday that Lin would miss at least six weeks with a torn meniscus in his knee.

Reserve J.R. Smith came off the bench and scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to finally allow the Knicks to pull away from the pesky Cavaliers, who kept the game within reach through the first three quarters before falling to their seventh consecutive loss.

Carmelo Anthony added 19 points for New York (27-26) and Tyson Chandler scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds. The Cavaliers, who were without Kyrie Irving, were led by Antawn Jamison's 13 points.

By Laura Zuckerman

SALMON, Idaho | Sat Mar 31, 2012 9:17pm EDT

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf, once a Heisman Trophy finalist and San Diego Chargers first round draft choice, was arrested in his hometown of Great Falls, Montana, on theft and drug charges, authorities said on Saturday.

Leaf was arrested on Friday on suspicion of felony burglary and drug possession as well as a misdemeanor theft charge, authorities said. Great Falls police were unable to provide further details on Saturday.

The arrest came just weeks after Leaf, 35, completed daily radiation treatments stemming from surgery last spring to remove a benign brain tumor.

The allegations come just months since publication of a book he co-wrote about his role in winning Washington State University's first Pac-10 title and leading the Washington State Cougars to the Rose Bowl in 1998.

Supporters of the one-time West Texas A&M quarterback coach are hopeful that the criminal charges are unfounded, said Greg Witter, who co-authored the book, "596 Switch," with Leaf.

Leaf has fought to conquer an addiction to painkillers brought on by a severe wrist injury that has plagued him since playing for the Chargers, he added.

"If the allegations are accurate, it's clearly disappointing. But, more than anything else, it speaks to you about how horrible addiction is and how difficult it is to overcome," said Greg Witter, who co-authored the book, "596 Switch," with Leaf.

"I know how hard Ryan has worked to get his life back," Witter said.

While Leaf was one of college football's brightest stars in the late 1990s, he lasted only four years in the NFL and was rated by a recent NFL films documentary and one of the biggest busts in the history of the professional football league.

After undergoing treatment for the addiction, Leaf returned to the national sports scene with publication of his book and book-signing tour. He also worked as a sports commentator for talk radio programs, Witter said.

Witter, a Seattle communications consultant, and three other Washington State boosters form what Witter called a "council of elders" for the former star quarterback.

The council has provided professional and personal support to Leaf as he battled a prescription painkiller habit, Witter said. Leaf's struggles with addiction came to public light three years ago when he faced drug charges in Texas.

He was still on probation for those violations when he was arrested in Montana. He was released from the Cascade County Detention Center in Montana on Friday after posting a $76,000 bond, authorities said.

Witter said the advisors had dinner with Leaf in Seattle less than a month ago. Leaf had lost a significant amount of weight and showed other signs of his battle with the brain tumor and nearly two months of daily radiation treatments. That therapy ended in December.

"Addiction is a lifelong affliction and you can never let your guard down," he said. "The bottom line is we want Ryan to get all the help he needs."

Leaf is scheduled to appear before a Montana judge on Monday to face the charges.

NEW YORK | Sat Mar 31, 2012 8:21pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin will miss at least the next six weeks due to a torn meniscus in his knee, the NBA team said on Saturday, signaling a likely end to the season for the Asian-American.

The downcast 23-year-old told a news conference before the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden that the injury to his left knee would require surgery early next week.

"We did everything we could," Lin told reporters. "This morning I got on the court to see how it feels. The decision was made this morning.

"I can't really do much. I can't really cut or jump. It's clear I won't be able to help the team unless I get this fixed right now."

In 35 games this season, Lin averaged 14.6 points and 6.1 assists, sparking a global craze dubbed "Linsanity" when he burst onto the scene last month as an unheralded bench warmer.

After being given his chance, Lin led the team on a seven-game winning streak to help turn around a moribund season.

He will now miss the team's last 14 games, however, with the timetable for recovery stretching two weeks past the start of NBA playoffs.

The Harvard graduate had already missed the last three games after feeling the brunt of the injury last Saturday in a game against the Detroit Pistons.

"It's disappointing for me," said Lin. "It's hard for me to watch the games and want to be out there. Hopefully I can come back as soon as possible and contribute this season."

The Knicks went into Saturday's game with a 26-26 record, holding the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

"It sucks," said Lin, who posted seven double-doubles in his remarkable surge after being cut by two other NBA teams and a stint in a development league this season.

Lin, however, said he expected to return better than ever.

"When I come back, I'll be stronger than I ever was. I will be a better player. This is just a bump in the road. I will do everything I can to come back," he said.

"This is not a career ending thing," added Lin, who could become a free agent after this season. "Once it's fixed, it's fixed. It's the simplest surgery you can have. I'm just worried about this season.

"We really put our heart and soul into the season and not to be there in the end, when it matters most, is hard."

Maggert holds one-shot lead at weather-hit Houston Open
Mar 31st 2012, 17:30

Sat Mar 31, 2012 1:30pm EDT

(Reuters) - American Jeff Maggert birdied three of his last eight holes to grab a one-shot lead when the weather-delayed second round of the Houston Open was finally completed in Humble, Texas on Saturday.

One of 70 players still out on the course when play was halted in fading light on Friday, Maggert carded a six-under-par 66 to post a 12-under total of 132 at the rain-softened Redstone Golf Club in the final tune-up event before next week's Masters.

The 48-year-old American, a three-times winner on the PGA Tour, briefly got to 13 under with a birdie at the eighth but he then three-putted to bogey his final hole, the par-three ninth.

Britain's Brian Davis (65), South African Louis Oosthuizen (66) and American James Driscoll (66) were tied for second at 11 under with defending champion Phil Mickelson (70) among a group of six players a further two strokes back.

Maggert was delighted to be at the top of the leaderboard after missing the cut in his previous five starts on the PGA Tour.

"The ball-striking has probably been the key," he told reporters after carding seven birdies and one bogey. "I've been hitting the ball really well this week, a lot of shots close to the hole where I'm not having to make 15, 20-footers for birdie.

"The greens are really rolling nice this week. I've got pretty good confidence right now after making quite a few putts the last two days so I'm looking forward to this afternoon."

More than an inch of rain saturated the course on Thursday and tournament organizers allowed the players to lift, clean and replace their balls in the delayed second round.

Asked how he had managed to regain form after his run of missed cuts, Maggert replied: "It's a strange game. I started the year playing really well... then just had a little stretch there where I wasn't hitting it that great.

"Instead of being 15 feet from the hole, I am putting from 30 and 40 feet and three-putting. But this week I have certainly turned it around."

Three-times major winner Ernie Els, who needs to win the Houston Open to qualify for next week's Masters, was at five-under 139 after shooting a 69.

The cut fell at two under with former British Open winners Darren Clarke, Stewart Cink and Ben Curtis, as well as Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, among those who failed to advance.

Louisville has a lot to prove against Kentucky
Mar 31st 2012, 17:23

By Steve Ginsburg

NEW ORLEANS | Sat Mar 31, 2012 1:23pm EDT

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Louisville can go a long way to elevating its status in the basketball-crazed Bluegrass State if it can defeat rival Kentucky in the opening game of the Final Four on Saturday at the Superdome.

Top seeded Kentucky is more talented than its intrastate rival and sports a richer tradition, but has a young team with three freshman and two sophomores in the starting line-up.

Cardinals coach Rick Pitino said the glare of the national spotlight can do strange things.

"You never know when the ball is thrown up in the Final Four, who is going to handle and overcome the nervousness of playing in a Final Four and who's going to be totally focused in and not bothered by it. You never know.

"There are some players I've coached in the past I thought would be really cool and calm, and they weren't, and others I thought wouldn't be were. You really can't tell by their demeanor before a game or how they act.

"Early on in the game if guys make shots, their confidence rises, it just becomes a basketball game. When they don't make shots, they start to press. So you really never know."

The winner will face either Kansas or Ohio State for the national championship on Monday night.

While the Kansas-Ohio State match-up features a pair of gifted teams with deep traditions, the revelers on nearby Bourbon Street were more vocal about the Battle of Kentucky.

John Calipari's Kentucky team boasts fans statewide, even in Louisville, while the Cardinals' stronghold is centered around its campus about 75 miles west of Lexington.

"The state is unique in that Kentucky fans are throughout the state," said Calipari, who sports a 100-14 record since arriving in Lexington three years ago.

"You don't have many North Carolina fans in Durham or many Duke fans in Chapel Hill or UCLA fans in Sacramento. It's just different. Our fans are throughout.

"That doesn't disrespect Louisville at all. They have their fan base, there's no question about it."

Kentucky (36-2), seeking its eighth national title, defeated Louisville 69-62 in late December but was shocked by Vanderbilt last month in the Southeastern Conference Tournament final.

On the flip side, the Cardinals are just 30-9 but are now riding an eight-game winning streak after winning the Big East Tournament as a seventh seed with a 50-44 victory over Cincinnati.

It took state legislators to get involved some 30 years ago to get Kentucky and Louisville to commit to playing in the regular season every year. This is the first time they are playing each other in the national semi-finals.

"We are both in the Final Four and neither team wants to lose," said Kentucky freshman guard Marquis Teague. "We are in the same position, we all want to come out and win.

"We expect them to come out swinging and we will come out swinging too."

Louisville senior guard Chris Smith said he's not bothered that bookmakers have made the Cardinals, seeking their third national crown, a nine-point underdog.

"It doesn't hurt at all," he said. "It actually feels good because the underdog most of the time comes out on top."

Djokovic to meet Murray after beating Monaco
Mar 31st 2012, 01:33

Fri Mar 30, 2012 9:33pm EDT

(Reuters) - World number one Novak Djokovic beat Argentine Juan Monaco 6-0 7-6 on Friday to reach the final of the Sony Ericsson Open, where he will meet Andy Murray.

Fourth-ranked Murray's semi-final against Rafa Nadal was a walkover after the Spaniard pulled out with a knee injury.

Djokovic dealt with a wayward Monaco in brutal fashion in the first set - dismissing him in just 27 minutes and taking full advantage of the Argentine's numerous unforced errors.

But after Djokovic broke to go 3-2 up in the second, Monaco fought back well and forced some errors out of the Serbian to level at 5-5 and then take the set into a tie-break.

It was a tight-affair to settle the set but Monaco went long on the decisive point to hand victory to Djokovic.

Women's Olympic basketball team loaded with talent and experience
Mar 31st 2012, 00:15

Fri Mar 30, 2012 8:15pm EDT

(Reuters) - The heavily favored U.S. women's basketball team will have no shortage of talent and experience when they seek a fifth consecutive gold medal at the London Olympic later this year.

The 11-member American team announced on Friday by USA Basketball includes three players who have already won two Olympic gold medals plus another four who have already won once before.

A 12th member will be selected later.

The well-balanced squad features guard Sue Bird, forward Tamika Catchings and guard-forward Diana Taurasi, all of whom won gold medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games.

They will be joined by 2004 gold medallist Swin Cash, a forward, and 2008 Olympic champion forward Seimone Augustus, center Sylvia Fowles and all-around player Candace Parker.

Center Tina Charles, forwards Angel McCoughtry and Maya Moore and guards Lindsay Whalen complete the selections.

"We believe we have selected the best core group possible to continue our success on the international stage," Jim Tooley, USA Basketball chief executive, said in a statement.

"These 11 players include a great mix of international veterans, whose leadership is invaluable to the team, and we have young players who have proven themselves and who are hungry for this opportunity."

The 12th member could be Baylor University center Brittney Griner, who is playing in the U.S. collegiate championships.

"She brings an element to any team that's impossible to find," U.S. head coach Geno Auriemma said earlier this year of the 6-foot-8 tall center.

"You don't find players who are game changers like that. I don't think anybody else in the world has anyone like Brittney Griner."

If selected, Griner will be the first college player to make a U.S. Olympic women's basketball team since 1988.

As for the 11 selected, all professionals, Auriemma said: "the committee took into consideration what the competition is and who we're going to have to beat, and put together a really incredible group of players that is not only highly skilled and competitive, they're proven winners.

Kentucky, Louisville drop the gloves at Final Four
Mar 30th 2012, 21:44

By Steve Ginsburg

NEW ORLEANS | Fri Mar 30, 2012 5:44pm EDT

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - One of college basketball's most passionate rivalries enters the stratosphere Saturday when top-seeded Kentucky hosts Louisville in the semi-finals of the NCAA Tournament.

Kentucky (36-2) is the most talented squad in the 68-team tournament but Louisville (30-9) has won eight straight and when intensity runs this deep, anything can happen.

The winner will face either Ohio State (31-7) or Kansas (31-6), who square off in the other semi-final, in Monday's national championship decider.

Kentucky knocked off Louisville 69-62 in December but that game has long been forgotten by both schools, located less than 80 miles apart in the basketball-mad state.

State legislators got involved nearly 30 years ago to get the rival schools to play each year during the regular season but this is the first time the two powerhouses have met in the Final Four.

"The magnitude is so much greater than a regular season game where everybody kids around, says jokes," Louisville coach Rick Pitino told reporters at the Superdome, the site of the Final Four.

"It's both fun intensity and a lot of things that go with it. But it's so much more meaningful now because what's at stake."

Kentucky boasts several players who will be wearing NBA jerseys in the near future. Freshmen Anthony Davis, the consensus player of the year, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist could make the leap into the pro ranks after the season.

It is a familiar territory for Kentucky, who reached the Final Four a year ago but lost to Connecticut in the semi-finals. Despite losing four players to the NBA, the Wildcats find themselves back in the title hunt.

"They recruit probably the best in the country," conceded Pitino, who won the national title while coaching Kentucky in 1996.

"If you're a player that's thinking of going to the NBA right away, Kentucky's going to be on your immediate list."

Kentucky coach John Calipari was convinced Pitino would try something to confuse his young squad.

"With the five days to prepare, I would imagine they've come up with a few things to try to, I don't want to use the word 'trick', but to confuse a team that starts two freshmen and three sophomores. I have no doubt that he has.

"Probably did some things in the zone. May have done something on the out of bounds defense. There may be something in the press that he hasn't done this year that they're going to do different in this game."

Kansas whipped Ohio State 78-67 in December but the Buckeyes, seeking their first title since 1960, were missing 6-foot-9 sophomore Jared Sullinger, one of the nation's best big men.

"He obviously makes us a better basketball team," said State coach Thad Matta, who led the Buckeyes to the 2007 title game before losing to Florida.

"It was unfortunate that he didn't get to play in the game in December. By the same token, I think that probably helped us in the long run that he wasn't out there."

Sullinger and teammate Deshaun Thomas will go toe-to-toe with Kansas's 6-foot-10 (2.08m) standout Thomas Robinson and 7-footer (2.13m) Jeff Withey in an enticing front court match-up.

"I wanted to go against him (in December)," said Robinson, who averages 17.7 points and 11.8 rebounds. "He's a great player. Every time you get a challenge like that, you want to take it on. I knew I would get my chance Saturday."

Kansas, who won the title over Calipari-coached Memphis in 2008, enters the Final Four as outsiders.

"I kind of like it, to be honest," Jayhawks coach Bill Self said.

"We have kind of flown under the radar, by Kansas standards of late, which I think has been very healthy for a team that's just trying to find themselves."

(Reuters) - World number one Yani Tseng, the LPGA Tour's dominant figure, birdied her final hole to grab an early two-shot lead in the second round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship in Rancho Mirage, California on Friday.

A winner in six of her last 12 LPGA events, the long-hitting Taiwanese fired a four-under-par 68 on another day of glorious sunshine at Mission Hills Country Club in the first women's major of the year.

Champion here in 2010 and fresh from consecutive victories on the U.S. circuit, Tseng mixed five birdies with one bogey to post an eight-under total of 136 on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

South Korea's Yoo Sun-young was alone in second, after carding a 69, with compatriots Choi Na-yeon (67) and five-times major winner Pak Se-ri (69) a further stroke back at five under.

Overnight leader Amy Yang, also of South Korea, followed her opening 66 with a 74 to slip back into an early tie for fifth at four under.

The ominous sight of Tseng at the top of the leaderboard will have sent shock waves across the field at Mission Hills as the game's top player hunts a sixth major victory.

"To catch Yani is difficult," five-times LPGA champion Choi told reporters after compiling five birdies in a flawless display.

"When she's playing well, she looks like a very intimidating player. She played so well today and last week and two weeks ago. She's an amazing player right now."

HAPPIER TSENG

Tseng had been disappointed with her opening 68 but she was much happier with the same score on Friday having negotiated slick greens that had quickened under a baking sun.

"Yesterday I had a couple of shots I just missed, and a couple of shots where I wasn't committed and I just hit it," the 23-year-old said.

"But today, on every shot, I gave my 100 percent focus. The goal was the same, but I feel so much happier today.

"I still have two more days to go, and this golf course suits me really well. I heard tomorrow's going to be very windy in the afternoon, so I just need to be patient."

Tseng finished her second round in style with a one-putt birdie at the par-five ninth.

"It just made my day," she said. "It made me feel that I can relax and do something more fun. I was feeling just so happy."

It was not a happy day though, for some of the other big names on the LPGA Tour.

Norway's Suzann Pettersen, who finished a stroke behind the triumphant Tseng at the 2010 Kraft Nabisco Championship, carded a 74 to lie 10 strokes off the pace.

American Michelle Wie was a further four shots adrift after battling to a 77.

Saints' Payton to appeal suspension: report
Mar 30th 2012, 18:21

Fri Mar 30, 2012 2:21pm EDT

(Reuters) - New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton will appeal his one year suspension for his role in the team's "bounty" scandal, the National Football League's (NFL) network said on Friday.

The network, citing an unnamed source, said Payton was expected to "seek guidance on the amount of time he will have to prepare his appeal, and will attempt to obtain the full reports from NFL security regarding the bounty evidence against him."

The report said former Saints defensive coach Gregg Willliams, now with the St. Louis Rams, would not appeal his penalty. He was suspended indefinitely in the wake of the pay-for-pain scandal.

Payton had until Monday to file the appeal. He was suspended last week after the NFL took a dim view of the revelations that the Saints had been rewarding their players for deliberately injuring their opponents.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis was slapped with an eight game suspension and assistant head coach Joe Vitt was suspended for six games.

The NFL also said it was investigating several players, raising the possibility that more penalties could be handed out.

Earlier this week, Payton indicated he planned to appeal but was also planning to talk to Bill Parcells about coaching the Saints this season.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had said he would probably allow Payton to continue working during the appeals process.

LONDON | Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:54am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - London is fully prepared to welcome the world at this year's summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Friday following the 10th and final visit of its inspection commission.

"We still have 119 days to go but I can tell you that London is ready to welcome the world," IOC commission chairman Denis Oswald told a news conference in London. "Seven years ago in Singapore the London team presented a very strong Olympic and Paralympic bid.

"It was a vision and we are really pleased that this vision is becoming reality. We can feel that London is feeling the fever of the Games."

Oswald said seven recent test events had been successfully conducted.

"The preparations are going on, a lot of volunteers are in full training to help the athletes and the public and the different people involved in the Games," he said.

"The cultural program is also nearly ready. We are in no doubt that this summer will be a summer like no other in Britain."

Paul Deighton, chief executive officer of the London organizing committee (LOCOG), said approximately one million more Games tickets would go on sale after the draw for the soccer tournament had been made on April 24.

One-and-a-half million tickets would then be available for the soccer and a further 1.5 million for the Paralympics.

BHOPAL PROTEST

"As we finalize the seating plan more seats will become available during the Games," he said.

Deighton also said he was "strongly confident" that LOCOG would not request any more funding from the government.

"It is an extraordinary success to bring a project of this scale and complexity in within its budget envelope. Anybody doing my job would be nuts to give a guarantee about anything but I think our track record to date would show we are in good shape," he said.

Some two dozen activists gathered in the square outside the building where the news conference was hosted in protest against Dow Chemical's sponsorship of the Games.

Campaigners say 25,000 people died in the years following a gas leak at a pesticides factory in the Indian city of Bhopal in 1984. Dow bought the plant's owners Union Carbide and the campaigners have demanded they boost a compensation package for those affected by the disaster.

Responding to a question asking if he would meet with campaigners, LOCOG chairman Seb Coe said: "The answer is yes, actually there have been ongoing exchanges for some time."

Oswald said the IOC realized what a tragedy Bhopal had been.

"We have a lot of sympathy for what is happening but we know that Dow was not the owner at the time of this accident and we know that LOCOG is engaged with them," he said.
