Thunder rolls over Spurs to reignite series
Jun 1st 2012, 05:14

Fri Jun 1, 2012 1:14am EDT

(Reuters) - The Oklahoma City Thunder reignited the Western Conference finals with a 102-82 home victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday, reducing their deficit in the best-of-seven series to 2-1 and ending the visitors' 20-game winning streak.

San Antonio, who won the first two games on home court, were unable to contain a fired-up Oklahoma City side as they suffered their first loss in 50 days.

The defeat leaves the Spurs one short of the Lakers' record of 11 straight post-season wins but more importantly it raises the prospect of a series that could go down to the wire.

For the first two games it looked as if San Antonio, built around experience and three championship wins in the 2000's, were in firm control.

Thursday's response from the Thunder was a reminder that the talented young team, who lost out to Dallas at this stage last year, are a formidable force on home court.

"I think they played smarter than we did and harder than we did," said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.

Kevin Durant top scored for the Thunder with 22 points but it was a team effort, particularly on defense, that paved the way to victory as the Spurs' offensive threat of Tony Parker (16 points) and Tim Duncan (11 points) were neutralized.

Durant was one of five Thunders players to make double figures, including Russell Westbrook whose ten points were accompanied by some intelligent controlling play throughout.

The Thunder's Swiss forward Thabo Sefolosha had an outstanding game guarding Parker and finished with 19 points to go with his six steals, including a tone-setting four steals in the opening three minutes.

"He's been a great defender for us all season and he was a huge help tonight," said Westbrook.

Oklahoma City forced 21 turnovers while giving up just eight and they imposed themselves on the game from the outset taking an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes, roared on by a noisy and passionate home crowd.

The Thunder had established a 54-41 lead by halftime with Durant making 16 points while the Spurs offense was restricted to 40 percent shooting in the opening two quarters.

The Thunder took an 18 point lead into the fourth quarter and Popovich opted to keep Parker and Duncan on the sidelines for the final 15 minutes, his thoughts already moving to Game Four.

Parker had shot just 6-12 as Sefolosha smothered him and the Thunder took advantage of their turnovers with 18 fast break points.

"I thought that we played great defense from the start, defensively that was as well as you can play against the best team in basketball," said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks.

Parker said the Spurs would now have to study video of the game to try and work out how to overcome the Thunder in Saturday's Game Four.

"They played with a lot of energy, more passion than us tonight and deserved the win - they played better, we will have to do a lot better if we are going to win here".

LONDON/SINGAPORE | Fri Jun 1, 2012 12:23am EDT

LONDON/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Motor sport racing company Formula One has delayed its Singapore initial public offer worth up to $3 billion, the fifth big Asian IPO to be postponed or pulled in a week, as weak markets bring the global market for new listings to a shuddering halt.

Worldwide, money raised from stock market flotations has slumped 46 percent so far this year compared with the same period of 2011, with investors wary of the euro zone crisis, China's economic slowdown and last month's botched Facebook IPO.

Formula One, which planned to list in Singapore, has become the latest issuer to hit the brakes, dropping plans to lodge its IPO prospectus with Singapore regulators early next week, sources familiar with the company's decision said on Friday.

But Bernie Ecclestone, the sport's boss and a part-owner of the company, said in an interview with Reuters that Formula One was biding its time, not scrapping the IPO altogether, and that its bankers would continue to meet prospective investors.

"We are getting prepared so all these things are done and then whenever we want to go, we can go," the 81-year-old billionaire said.

On Thursday, London luxury jeweler Graff Diamonds ditched its $1 billion IPO in Hong Kong, Asia's IPO capital, which along with the United States has seen a slump in initial offers. Deal volumes in Hong Kong have dived 85 percent so far in 2012. In the United States, 12 IPOs were pulled or delayed in May.

Facebook has contributed to the chill in the American IPO market. In just 10 trading sessions, shares in the social networking phenomenon have tumbled from an initial price of $38 each to $29.60, offering a stark warning to any company on the fence about entering the public markets.

Excluding Facebook, 72 U.S.-listed companies have filed so far this year, raising proceeds of $13.1 billon, a 53 percent decrease from a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters data.

"This has created a crisis of confidence," said Scott Sweet, managing partner at IPO Boutique, based in Florida. "The companies still in the pipeline will stay in the pipeline. There is no reason to rush out when the granddaddy of them all has come and gone and left an indelible negative impression."

CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE

This month, both Georgia's state railways monopoly and Russian real estate investor O1 Properties pulled planned London listings, blaming volatile markets as uncertainty over the future of Greece deterred investors from taking the risk of putting money into IPOs and emerging markets.

In the immediate aftermath of Facebook, Corsair Components and Tria Beauty both postponed U.S. offerings. Research firm Renaissance Securities said this month that American IPO filings and pricing were both down sharply this quarter.

"Anything that is out there is going to be subject to a valuation haircut. And the deals that are being postponed (are) at companies that are unwilling to undergo those valuation reductions," said David Menlow, president of IPOFinancial.

For now, though, some companies continue to press ahead with offerings in Asia.

On Thursday, Malaysia launched the biggest Asian IPO to hit the road so far this year: a $3 billion offer in Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd, the world's third-largest palm plantation operator. It is preparing for a market debut on June 28.

Felda is not expected to suffer the same fate as Graff. So-called cornerstone investors are taking about two-thirds of the shares, and the Malaysian government is using the sale to deliver a windfall of more the $500 million to tens of thousands of landholders ahead of an expected election.

Also in Malaysia, state investor Khazanah Nasional plans to raise up to $2 billion in an initial offer of shares in IHH Healthcare Bhd, which aims to list in Malaysia and Singapore in July, a source with direct knowledge said.

The biggest IPO still in the Asian pipeline is Chinese state-owned insurer PICC Group, which plans to raise up to $6 billion in a Hong Kong-Shanghai dual listing. IPOs from Chinese state-owned entities could be less sensitive to market volatility because they tend to be supported by funds of other government companies and by China's sovereign wealth fund.

Deals from so-called defensive sectors such as utilities or high-dividend companies should also fare better in the current market, though no IPOs are considered easy sells, bankers said.

Meanwhile, there is a small ray of light in the European IPO tunnel: Spain's Telefonica said on Thursday it would list its German unit, in a move to cut debt and potentially free up capital for dealmaking.

Formula One is also still holding out hope that it can come to market before year-end. "It's going to be this year, we said we would do it this year," Ecclestone said.

Some stock analysts said the so-called IPO window could indeed reopen later in the year - provided China eased monetary policy and Europe found some resolution to its debt crisis.

"Bankers aren't very optimistic for the second half, it's going to be very difficult," said one Hong-Kong based capital markets lawyer.

Tigers avoid sweep with win in Boston
Jun 1st 2012, 03:28

Thu May 31, 2012 11:28pm EDT

(Reuters) - The Detroit Tigers avoided a four game sweep with a 7-3 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Thursday.

The Tigers had lost the last seven games in Boston but they ended that run with Max Scherzer pitching into the seventh inning and retiring nine consecutive batters.

Boston pitcher Josh Beckett allowed four runs on 10 hits in seven innings pitched with one walk and just one strikeout.

Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, with a solo home run, and Scott Podsednik put Boston 2-0 ahead at the bottom of the second.

Three runs at the top of the third, though, shifted the momentum to Detroit although another RBI from Saltalamacchia tied the game at three.

An RBI single for Miguel Cabrera in the fifth and a Delmon Young home run in the eighth put Detroit ahead, however.

Prince Fielder produced an a RBI triple in the top of the ninth inning off reliever Rich Hill to make it 6-3 and then a RBI single from Young wrapped up the win.

The Tigers now have three games at home against the New York Yankees this weekend.

DUBLIN, Ohio | Thu May 31, 2012 9:18pm EDT

DUBLIN, Ohio (Reuters) - Phil Mickelson, with next month's U.S. Open very much in mind, withdrew from the Memorial tournament due to fatigue after carding a seven-over-par 79 in Thursday's opening round.

The American world number 12 pulled out of the elite event hosted by Jack Nicklaus at Muirfield Village Golf Club after covering his back nine in six-over 42.

"I think mentally I'm a little bit fatigued," Mickelson told reporters. "The course here is in such great shape. It's a beautiful way to get ready for the U.S. Open.

"But I'm hitting it so poorly ... I have to look at what's best for me to play in the U.S. Open, and I'm going to take the next few days to kind of rest up."

The U.S. Open, the second of the year's four majors, will be played from June 14-17 at San Francisco's Olympic Club.

"Certainly I'm disappointed with how I played today, but I've got to be more big picture oriented and think about the (U.S.) Open and what's best to get my best golf out there," Mickelson said. "I need the next few days to rest up a bit."

Mickelson said his fatigue built up after he took his wife Amy to Europe last week to celebrate her 40th birthday, having previously played three consecutive events on the PGA Tour.

"We went to Italy and Paris," the four-times major champion added. "I came back and had a Tuesday outing in Long Island, the pro-am. Mentally I'm a little bit fatigued."

Mickelson played in a high-profile grouping on Thursday with Masters champion Bubba Watson and fast-rising American talent Rickie Fowler.

Hardly surprisingly, they attracted a huge gallery with several fans repeatedly taking pictures of the players with their cell phones, which are now permitted in specific areas at PGA Tour events.

Asked whether such distractions had been a factor in his poor form at Muirfield Village, Mickelson replied: "I think it was more that mentally I wasn't able to focus as well from the last month more than anything."

Mickelson, a 40-times champion on the PGA Tour, could not recall a previous occasion when he had to withdraw from a tournament without suffering an injury.

"It very well could be," the American lefthander said. "I feel like it's the responsibility of a player to see through your commitment (to play) and finish the tournament and so forth.

"I'm kind of overruling that just a touch because I'm trying to think big picture on what's the best way for me to get ready for the Open."

Formula One to delay Singapore IPO: WSJ
Jun 1st 2012, 00:46

Thu May 31, 2012 8:46pm EDT

(Reuters) - Motor racing business Formula One Group has decided to delay its initial public offer on the Singapore stock exchange because of global market weakness, the Wall Street Journal said on Friday, quoting unnamed sources. It was worth up to $3 billion.

Formula One, whose major shareholder is private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, was in pre-marketing mode and had been planning to launch a preliminary prospectus with the Monetary Authority of Singapore by June 5, the newspaper added.

On Thursday, London luxury jeweller Graff Diamonds ditched its $1 billion IPO, adding to a chill that Facebook's botched IPO cast over an already moribund global market for new listings from Hong Kong to New York.

Reuters: Sports News: Clemens' ex-manager cites pitcher's "work ethic"

Clemens' ex-manager cites pitcher's "work ethic"
May 31st 2012, 21:39

Thu May 31, 2012 5:30pm EDT

(Reuters) - Roger Clemens' defense team tried again on Thursday to show at his federal trial that the former pitcher's stunning late-career success was the product of hard work and smart pitching, not performance-enhancing drugs, according to media reports.

Clemens won his seventh Cy Young Award in 2004 - the summer he turned 42 - in his first season with the Houston Astros, after ending the season with an impressive 2.98 earned run average.

Clemens' late-career success "did not surprise me, knowing his mechanics and his work ethic," said Phil Garner, Clemens' manager when he pitched for the Astros from 2004-2006, according to USA Today.

Clemens is on trial for the second time on federal charges of lying in 2008 to the House of Representatives' Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which was investigating drug use in Major League Baseball.

His first trial ended last year in a mistrial.

Earlier, prosecutors and defense attorneys debated at length over whether the estranged wife of the government's key witness would testify for the defense. The testimony of Eileen McNamee, who is in the middle of a divorce from Clemens' former strength trainer, Brian McNamee, could prove damaging to the prosecution's case.

Brian McNamee has testified that he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone in 1998, 2000 and 2001. Clemens testified that McNamee injected him with vitamin B-12.

At issue now is Eileen McNamee's immunity, which was granted during the government's investigation into whether Clemens lied to Congress under oath when he denied that he had ever used performance enhancing drugs.

McNamee's estranged husband's testimony and cross-examination implicated her in a number of illegal activities, prosecutors argued, and the parameters of her immunity from prosecution remain unclear, according to USA Today. Defense attorneys countered that her testimony would contradict Brian McNamee's claims.

"I would suspect, based on what I've heard, the department will be able to give her immunity (so the defense can call her as a witness)," U.S. District Court Judge Reggie Walton said, according to USA Today.

Reuters: Sports News: F1 IPO only when time is right: Ecclestone

F1 IPO only when time is right: Ecclestone
May 31st 2012, 20:07

By Alan Baldwin

LONDON | Thu May 31, 2012 4:07pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Formula One is getting everything in place for a flotation this year but it will only happen when the time is right, the sport's commercial head, Bernie Ecclestone, told Reuters on Thursday, signaling that a listing in June was now unlikely.

"We're going through all the normal motions which go before...the analysts and the banks and all these people," said the 81-year-old billionaire.

"We are getting prepared so all these things are done and then whenever we want to go, we can go."

Asked whether that could mean a delay of several months, given the volatile nature of markets and four major IPOs being called off in Asia this week, Ecclestone said it would be a case of "waiting until we think it's the right time."

Formula One is planning to float in Singapore, with premarketing for the $3 billion IPO already under way. The company had been expected to issue a prospectus next week prior to going on the market later in June.

Ecclestone said it would be wrong to talk of any delay because no firm date had been set for an IPO.

"It's going to be this year, we said we would do it this year. It's not intended to be delayed," said the Briton.

English soccer club Manchester United put plans to float in Singapore on hold last year because of market turmoil.

INVESTMENT DEAL

Formula One management has been stressing that it was keeping its options open on its future financial structure. Chairman Peter Brabeck told Reuters last week no decision had been made whether to proceed with the IPO.

Private equity firm CVC Capital Partners unveiled a $1.6 billion deal earlier in May to sell a 21 percent stake in the business to U.S. investments groups Waddell & Reed and BlackRock, along with Norway's Norges Bank Investment Management.

The sale cut CVC's stake to around 42 percent and CVC Managing Partner Donald Mackenzie told Reuters last week that the agreement eased the pressure to do an IPO. CVC has been the main owner of Formula One since 2006.

A slump in Asian equities in the past week has weighed on investors' demand for new listings in the region while Europe's debt troubles and slower growth in China have added to investors caution.

The fallout of Facebook's IPO debacle earlier this month is also weighing on markets.

Formula One gets about a third of its revenue from race promotion fees, with countries like Bahrain and Abu Dhabi paying up to $40 million a year for the rights to host grands prix.

Another one-third of revenue comes from broadcasting rights, with the remainder coming from advertising sales and non-core businesses including transportation of race teams and hospitality at race tracks.

Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and UBS have been hired to lead the IPO.

Tiger lurks just one shot off early Memorial pace
May 31st 2012, 19:15

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

DUBLIN, Ohio | Thu May 31, 2012 3:15pm EDT

DUBLIN, Ohio (Reuters) - Four-times champion Tiger Woods, without playing at his best, moved ominously into contention at the Memorial tournament after shooting a two-under-par 70 in Thursday's opening round.

The former world number one birdied three of the four par-fives in surprisingly firm and fast-running conditions at a sun-drenched Muirfield Village Golf Club to finish one stroke off the early pace.

Australian Aaron Baddeley, South African Rory Sabbatini, Argentina's Andres Romero and American Blake Adams each carded 69s to take joint control but Woods captured most of the attention in the upper reaches of the leader board.

"It was just a solid round today," Woods told reporters after mixing four birdies with a double-bogey at the treacherous par-four 18th, his ninth hole of the day.

"It certainly could have been a lot lower, but I'm pleased with the way I hit the golf ball today. I didn't do anything great and I didn't do anything poorly today.

"The golf course was playing quick today and the fairways were starting to chase a little bit. The greens were somewhat receptive. It's a hell of a test out there, really."

Woods, who played in the company of fellow Americans Bill Haas and Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples, did not hesitate in reply when asked what had been the key to his round.

"I was just very consistent," he said. "You have to drive the ball well, you have to position it on these greens, and you're going to have to make some tough putts.

"There's no two ways around it. These greens are at a pace where it's hard to get the ball close, and you're going to have to have some tough ones out there. Over the next three days, hopefully I can play as well as I did today."

NEGOTIATING ADVERSITY

British world number one Luke Donald and second-ranked Northern Ireland Rory McIlroy were also relatively pleased with their scores, though both had to negotiate adversity before carding matching 71s.

"Hopefully that's my loose round out of the way," said Donald, who recovered from a double-bogey at the 18th, his ninth hole of the day.

"I didn't hit the ball well and I was scrambling a lot. But fortunately I putted pretty well, and I'm pretty happy with the score in the end. This course is tricky.

"There are some tougher pins out there today and overall I'll take one under and try and play better the next three days," added the Englishman who won the European Tour's flagship PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday.

McIlroy faced a much bigger hill to climb after he ran up an ugly quadruple-bogey seven at the par-three 12th, his third hole of the round.

"It wasn't the start that I wanted to get off to, being four over through three holes, especially after the last few weeks," said the 23-year-old, who has missed the cut in his last two tournaments.

"I was just like, 'Here we go again'. But I hung in there well, and proud of myself for the way I just fought back. To finish the round under par I thought was a really good effort."

Masters champion Bubba Watson and fellow Americans Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker, who won last year's Memorial tournament, were among the day's late starters.

PARIS | Thu May 31, 2012 10:54am EDT

PARIS (Reuters) - World number four Andy Murray battled through back pain to win his second-round match at the French Open against Finn Jarkko Nieminen on Thursday.

The Briton, who said later he came within a few points of retiring, won 1-6 6-4 6-1 6-2, and will face unseeded Colombian Santiago Giraldo in the third round.

Murray, a semi-finalist here last year, summoned the trainer three times during the opening set and lay on a towel, grimacing in pain, as his back was massaged.

He opted to stand during changeovers but started to move more easily as the match progressed and began hitting winners.

The 48th-ranked Nieminen was unable to take advantage of Murray's troubles and hit more unforced errors than the Scot in the later sets.

When he put a backhand out to give Murray breakpoint in the seventh game of the final set, Nieminen threw his racket to the clay and stamped on it. A double fault followed, and Murray went 5-2 up.

Murray had to withdraw from the Madrid Masters this month with a back injury but said Thursday's problem was a different, though possibly related, issue.

"It wasn't the same thing I had before," he told a news conference. "I was absolutely fine yesterday in practice, no problem, went to bed and I was fine, and I woke up this morning...couldn't put any weight on my left leg."

Murray said he considered pulling out before the match but, after taking advice from his physiotherapist that the problem was probably a back spasm and playing would not aggravate the underlying injury, decided to go ahead.

"After I got up from the changeover at 3รข€'0, it was really, really sore," he added. "And then obviously I was struggling a lot for about an hour, hour 15, hour-and-a-half.

"Then it started to feel a bit better but still not great, but (I was) just kind of gritting my teeth and trying to find a way of turning the match around, because I was a few points probably from stopping in the middle of the second set."

Murray said standing at the change of ends eased his back but he still could not believe he had a chance of winning the match.

"Him making a few mistakes and getting a little bit nervous and me feeling a little bit better, and then that was it," he said. "I couldn't believe I was in a position to win at the end of the fourth set."

Murray, crediting his personal physiotherapist as "one of the best" said he would play on and was not afraid of jeopardizing his chances for Wimbledon next month or the London Olympics in July and August.

"I'm going to try and carry on regardless, whether it's a bit sorer tomorrow or two days' time, I'm going to carry on," he said.

"If it was the same thing, then I would be really, really concerned about Wimbledon and obviously the Olympics but so long as what I'm getting told by doctors and the physios is that it is just a muscle spasm then that's nothing to be overly concerned by."

Li canters into third round in Paris

PARIS | Thu May 31, 2012 11:09am EDT

PARIS (Reuters) - Defending champion Li Na raced into the French Open third round when she brushed aside Frenchwoman Stephane Foretz Gacon 6-0 6-2 on Thursday.

Chinese seventh seed Li, who last year became the first Asian player to win a grand slam singles title, needed just 52 minutes to advance on Court One.

Foretz Gacon, the world number 86, won the first two points but that was as close as she came to victory as Li bagged the opening 10 games.

Foretz Gacon pulled a break back but the revival was short-lived with Li setting up a meeting against either Lauren Davis or her fellow American Christina Mchale.

PARIS | Thu May 31, 2012 9:14am EDT

PARIS (Reuters) - Fourth seed Andy Murray, grimacing in pain, battled his way into the third round of the French Open on Thursday by defeating Finn Jarkko Nieminen 1-6 6-4 6-1 6-2 despite back problems.

The Briton was joined in the third round by French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who returned to complete a match suspended overnight because of rain and finished off German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-2 4-6 6-2 6-1.

Murray was a semi-finalist last year - his best result at the claycourt grand slam - but looked to be heading for an early exit in the first set of his match on Philippe Chatrier court.

He summoned the trainer three times and lay, with his teeth clenched, as his back was massaged, then got up again to move stiffly around the court. At changeovers, he stayed on his feet rather than sitting down.

Nieminen, however, was unable to take advantage and as the match progressed, and Murray loosened up and started going for more shots, the 48th-ranked Finn began hitting unforced errors.

When he hit a backhand out to give Murray breakpoint at 2-4 in the fourth set, Nieminen dashed his racket to the ground and stamped on it. His next action was a double fault and Murray found himself serving for the match.

Though Nieminen saved one matchpoint with a winning service return, Murray hit a service winner on the second and will now play Colombian Santiago Giraldo, who knocked out 25th seed Bernard Tomic of Australia 6-4 6-1 6-3.

Nieminen said he was disappointed with himself, adding: "I feel like I had him รข€' I felt that I should have taken the second set. Overall I'm not happy the way I played."

Tsonga had gone off court on Wednesday evening level at one set all and 1-1 in the third with Stebe when rain fell on Roland Garros for the first time this week.

The Frenchman started Thursday with a break and needed less than an hour to see off Stebe and set up an appointment with either Serbian 28th seed Viktor Troicki or Italian Fabio Fognini.

Tsonga was delighted that rain had cut short Wednesday's play, saying he had had trouble concentrating.

"It was children's day yesterday - there was a lot of noise, and I was getting a bit crazy," he told a news conference. "So I think it was a good idea the match was stopped yesterday and I could start again in far better conditions for me."

Sixth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer had a straightforward, 6-3 6-3 6-2 win over French player Benoit Paire and will now play either 27th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia or Dutchman Robin Haase.

Women's fourth seed Petra Kvitova, who has had a year marked by illness and injury, was in fine form on the Suzanne Lenglen court, swiftly beating Pole Urszula Radwanska 6-1 6-3.

Local favorite Arnaud Clement, the oldest man in the draw at 34, bade goodbye to Roland Garros after 15 appearances here with an emotional ceremony on court after his 3-6 7-6 0-6 6-2 6-1 defeat by Belgian lucky loser David Goffin.

Former Davis Cup captain Guy Forget and French tennis federation president Jean Gachassin presented Clement with a glass cube containing a sample of the Roland Garros clay.
