Lockout looms as talks between NHL and players' union stall
Aug 31st 2012, 23:36

Fri Aug 31, 2012 7:36pm EDT

(Reuters) - Labor talks between the National Hockey League (NHL) and union representing its players broke off on Friday with both sides at odds on the core economic issues, raising the possibility of a lockout in two weeks.

With the NHL having already said it is prepared to lock out players if a new deal is not reached by the time the current one expires on September 15, the league could be headed toward its first work stoppage since a lockout wiped out the 2004-05 season.

"What I thought was starting as a promising week ... ends in disappointment," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters after meeting with the union for the third time in four days.

"We did not get a proposal from the union, call it more of a response. ... We both agreed when one of us has something to say, we will pick up the phone."

On Tuesday, the league offered a six-year contract that it felt included significant concessions from the initial proposal it presented in July that included new contract restrictions and would have reduced the players' share of revenue to 43 percent.

The NHL's latest proposal wants to cut the players' share of hockey-related revenue to 46 percent from 57 percent despite enjoying record-breaking revenue of $3.3. billion last season along with an increase in television ratings.

The NHL Players' Association (NHLPA) presented its latest counterproposal on Friday at a meeting in New York and Executive Director Don Fehr said the offer did not bear fruit and so talks were recessed.

"We will not be discussing these issues again until there's an indication from the NHL that they are prepared to do so," Fehr said after Friday's meeting, which lasted less than two hours. "And hopefully that will come soon."

The NHL's 82-game regular season is scheduled to open on October 11.

NEW YORK | Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:37pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Andy Roddick's transition from the tennis court to the rocking chair was delayed when the former world number one reached the third round of the U.S. Open on Friday, joining a parade of former champions advancing at the year's final grand slam.

Roddick, who announced Thursday he would retire at the end of the tournament, served his way past rising Australian talent Bernard Tomic 6-3 6-4 6-0 in his second-round match at raucous Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Joining the 2003 U.S. Open champion in the winner's circle Friday were former titlists Novak Djokovic, Samantha Stosur, Maria Sharapova, Juan Martin Del Potro and Lleyton Hewitt.

One favourite who was shown the door was China's Li Na, who became the latest victim of British giantkiller Laura Robson.

None of Friday's array of former champions excited the passions of the Flushing Meadows faithful more than Roddick, the never-say-die Texan who never saw a fight he did not like.

Roddick, 30, blasted 13 aces in the one hour, 27-minute rout under the lights.

He said he became emotional 15 minutes before the match when he saw a tribute to his career being shown on a television in the locker room.

"Oh man, that was so much fun," Roddick told the crowd in his on-court interview. "I really appreciate that, thank you guys. I just wanted to come out and be aggressive.

"I'm going to try to stick around a little longer."

The defending champions at the National Tennis Center had little trouble advancing, as Djokovic blitzed Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-2 6-1 6-2 in sun-drenched Ashe Stadium, while Stosur sent off American Vavara Lepchenko 7-6 6-2 on the same court to reach the women's fourth round.

GRITTY VICTORY

Robson's gritty 6-4 6-7 6-2 triumph over former French Open champion Li, who triumphed in Cincinnati earlier this month, also created a buzz at Flushing Meadows.

Robson sent four-times grand slam champion Kim Clijsters into retirement in the second round but her upset of ninth-seeded Li surely made believers of those who thought she might be a one-hit wonder.

Next up in the fourth round is Australian Stosur.

"I have had a fairly tough draw, haven't I?" the soft-spoken 18-year-old, who was born in Australia, told reporters with a laugh.

"You have to beat who is in front of you. ... That's what I managed to do so far. I play Stosur now, who is defending champ. That's going to be really tough."

At 2-2 in the third set, Robson thought she had broken serve but umpire Louise Engzell ruled that the point should be replayed, even though Li had missed with her return.

The 89th-ranked Robson, however, refused to bend, breaking Li's serve twice to lead 5-2 before serving out the match.

"I wouldn't say I wasn't distracted. I was a little bit annoyed," Robson said of the umpire's call. "But that's what happens from time to time, so you've got to deal with it."

Djokovic dropped just two games in his opening-round win over Italy's Paolo Lorenzi and Silva managed only three more as the second-seeded Serb was in a different class.

"I didn't know much about my opponent," said Djokovic. "Never saw him play. So that could have been difficult at the start in order to figure out what his game plan is. But I played well from the start to the end."

Stosur was broken in the opening game of her match, setting the tone for a grueling first set, which lasted 59 minutes. But the Australian secured the tiebreaker 7-5 and blew through the second set over a frustrated Lepchenko in 29 minutes.

"As the match went on I probably became a little bit more comfortable, got used to her spin, and maybe the wind a little bit more," said Stosur, who lost only five games in her first two matches. "Once I got that first set then maybe I relaxed a little bit more."

Sharapova continued her imperious march through the draw as she crushed American college player Mallory Burdette 6-1 6-1 to reach the fourth round.

The Russian, who has lost just seven games in her first three matches, next plays compatriot Nadia Petrova, a 6-4 7-5 winner over Czech Lucie Safarova.

Del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open winner, downed American Ryan Harrison 6-2 6-3 2-6 6-2, while 31-year-old wildcard Hewitt, who won the title in 2001, outlasted Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, 3-6 7-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 in four hours, 35 minutes.

NORTON, Massachusetts | Fri Aug 31, 2012 8:02pm EDT

NORTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Tiger Woods produced a stunning surge in the opening round of the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday but was overshadowed by 21-year-old South Korean Noh Seung-yul, who rocketed to a one-shot lead.

Noh tore apart the TPC Boston course with a bogey-free nine-under-par 62 that left him one shot clear of American Chris Kirk in the second of the PGA Tour's four FedExCup playoff events.

Woods, Jeff Overton and Ryan Moore were tied in third place after the American trio shot matching 64s while world number one Rory McIlroy and American Bryce Molder were a further shot back.

Woods had earlier set the Boston crowds alight with a birdie blitz reminiscent of his glory days.

The 14-times major champion played his first eight holes in two-under par before carding six consecutive birdies to lead by as many as four shots at one stage.

"I played really well today. I hit a lot of good shots, and on top of that I putted well at the same time ... it was a nice little combination," said Woods, who made five birdies from 12 feet or longer. "I hit the ball well enough to probably shoot maybe one or two more."

Woods, the 2006 champion at this event, played the back nine first and wasted little time making a move.

After his tee shot at the par-three 11th landed 12 feet from the hole, Woods coolly drained the birdie putt for some early confidence on the greens. Two holes later Woods sank a 19-footer that put him at two-under par.

He came within inches of an eagle from 42 feet on the 18th but took the birdie, the first of six on the trot, including a 12-footer on his 11th hole and a 15-footer on his 12th.

EFFORTLESS BIRDIES

The heat dissipated a little over his final four holes as Woods missed a chance for a seventh consecutive birdie before scrambling for pars on the seventh and eighth holes.

The only blemish of the day for Woods came on the last hole when he overcooked his approach shot at the par-four ninth and failed to get up and down.

Noh, a rookie on the U.S. Tour, shot his lowest score of the year with seemingly effortless birdies and was not afraid to admit that he did so while trying to copy Woods's swing.

The South Korean works with Woods's Canadian swing coach Sean Foley and often tries to mimic the former world number one's mechanics after looking at photos of his childhood idol.

"Sometimes (Foley) sends photos to me by text, like Justin Rose's swing, and then Hunter (Mahan) and Tiger's swing sometimes gets sent to me, and then he says to look at the three guys' swing, and then think about myself and then try to do it myself, so that's a good thing," said Noh.

"Everything was good today. Swing, putting, everything was great today. I'm just trying to make the Tour Championship points, but hopefully finish at the top five."

The leading 70 players on the FedExCup points list after this event advance to the BMW Championship, with the top 30 then advancing to the Tour Championship finale in Atlanta where the overall points winner pockets a $10 million bonus.

Fri Aug 31, 2012 6:30pm EDT

(Reuters) - Washington Redskins safety Tanard Jackson has been suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the National Football League's substance abuse policy, the league said on Friday.

Jackson's suspension, his third, begins immediately and he will not be eligible for reinstatement until Aug 31, 2013, a league spokesman said.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer was suspended four games in the 2009 season and played in only two games in 2010 before being banned for the remainder of the season.

He had 32 tackles and two interceptions in 10 games with Tampa Bay last season.

NEW YORK | Fri Aug 31, 2012 5:17pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Defending champions Novak Djokovic and Samantha Stosur continued their easy paths through the U.S. Open on Friday, while China's Li Na became the latest victim of British giant-killer Laura Robson.

Djokovic blitzed Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-2 6-1 6-2 on sun-drenched Arthur Ashe Stadium court, while Stosur used the same venue to send off American Vavara Lepchenko 7-6 6-2.

But it was Robson's gritty 6-4 6-7 6-2 triumph over former French Open champion Li, who triumphed in Cincinnati earlier this month, that created the biggest buzz at the year's final grand slam.

Robson sent four-times grand slam champion Kim Clijsters into retirement in the second round but her upset of ninth-seeded Li surely made believers of those who thought she might be a one-hit wonder.

Next up in the fourth round is Australian Stosur.

"I wouldn't say I wasn't distracted. I was a little bit annoyed," Robson said of the umpire's call. "But that's what happens from time to time, so you've got to deal with it."

LOVE AFFAIR

While Robson's star is rising, Andy Roddick's is on the way out as the American faces up and coming Australian Bernard Tomic under the lights later Friday at Ashe Stadium in what could be his last career match.

New Yorkers have always loved Roddick and the 24,000 in attendance will surely bring that love affair to a new level given Roddick's announcement on Thursday that he is retiring after the tournament.

After the Roddick match, top seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus takes on China's Zheng Jie, the 28th seed.

In other matches, third seeded Russian Maria Sharapova, the 2006 U.S. Open winner, advanced easily, as did Spain's fourth seed David Ferrer on the men's side.

NEW YORK | Fri Aug 31, 2012 5:42pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - When Laura Robson won the Wimbledon junior title as a 14-year-old in 2008, former players were falling over themselves to tip her for the top.

Four years later and the British left-hander with the big forehand and a quick wit is starting to deliver.

Already the youngest player in the women's top 100, the 18-year-old followed her shock win over three-times champion Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open this week by stunning former French Open champion Li Na of China in the third round on Friday.

It was a performance full of power and maturity for such a young player, making her the first British woman to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows since 1998.

Her world ranking of 89 is set to rise to at least 75 and if she beats defending champion Samantha Stosur in the fourth round on Sunday, she would climb to the verge of the world's top 50.

"I think the level has always been there," a delighted but refreshingly level-headed Robson said. "In the last few matches I think it's noticeable that instead of just trying to hit a winner off a tough shot like I have done in the past, I'm just trying to make a percentage shot back.

"That makes all the difference really."

The arrival of a new coach in Croatian Zeljko Krajan just three weeks ago also seems to have done the trick.

"In the last few weeks I have gained a bit of confidence and the work that I have done with him has been very specific in terms of tactical stuff," she said.

In her steady rise up the rankings, Robson has had her fair share of injuries including a stress fracture in her shin and a groin problem.

Now injury-free, Robson has been working with Andy Murray's fitness trainer, Jez Green, and in her three wins in New York, her movement around the court has been a revelation.

"(Being fully fit) has been massive," she said. "It just makes so much of a difference mentally. I just feel like I'm healthy. This is my third match and I'm feeling fine, I'm feeling fit."

SILVER MEDAL

Robson won a silver medal at the London Olympics in mixed doubles with Andy Murray and said that experience, as well as pushing Maria Sharapova hard in the singles, helped boost her confidence.

"I have always thought that I can play with the top girls," she said. "Whenever I've practiced with Caroline (Wozniacki) or Maria, I've always felt that the level was there.

"It was just taking that onto the match court and keeping the level up for the whole match. That's what I have worked on. That's been the biggest difference."

Born in Australia, Robson's parents moved the family to Singapore when she was 18 months old and then to Britain as a six-year-old.

With Virginia Wade the last Briton, male or female, to win a grand slam singles title at Wimbledon in 1977, Robson has to deal with plenty of expectation on her shoulders.

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney tweeted his congratulations after her victory over Li and she spotted British comedian James Corden in the stands during that match.

"I was trying not to wave," she laughed. "But Wayne got my name wrong. He said Robinson."

The 18-year-old's sense of humor already shines through in news conferences, and she was quick to put down an Australian who suggested she might want to change her nationality back to the country of her birth.

"I get asked that every time by an Australian journalist," she said. "I don't think my answer has ever changed. Still a no."

NORTON, Massachusetts | Fri Aug 31, 2012 3:37pm EDT

NORTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Tiger Woods produced a stunning surge in the opening round of the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday, firing a seven-under 64 to share the early clubhouse lead with fellow American Jeff Overton.

The 14-times major champion played his first eight holes in two-under par before carding six consecutive birdies to lead by as many as four shots at one stage in the second of the PGA Tour's four lucrative FedExCup playoff events.

"I played really well today. I hit a lot of good shots, and on top of that I putted well at the same time ... it was a nice little combination," said Woods, who made five birdies from 12 feet or longer. "I hit the ball well enough to probably shoot maybe one or two more."

Australia's John Senden and South African Louis Oosthuizen were two shots back after carding matching five-under 66s while big names Luke Donald, Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter were among five players in the clubhouse a further shot back.

Overton did his best to keep pace and, after going two-under through 11 holes, put together his own birdie binge by closing out his round with six birdies over the final seven holes to join Woods atop the leaderboard.

"It makes the game easy whenever you putt well," said Overton. "Unfortunately the last three months I think it's probably been the worst I've ever putted in my life.

"I've seen three different putting instructors over the last five weeks, and I think at the PGA (Championship) I threeâ€'putted like five times or something, and it was just horrible.

"And then today for some reason all the hard work that I've been putting into it paid off, and I was able to clean the ball up around the hole."

The leading 70 players on the FedExCup points list after this event advance to the BMW Championship, with the top 30 then advancing to the Tour Championship finale in Atlanta where the overall points winner pockets a $10 million bonus.

FERROL, Spain | Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:23pm EDT

FERROL, Spain (Reuters) - Britain's Steven Cummings, who has had a season full of thrills and spills, sprinted to the biggest win of his career on stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana on Friday.

Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain retained the overall lead ahead of countryman Alberto Contador and third-placed Briton Chris Froome.

Part of a six-rider, day-long break, the 31-year-old Cummings dropped his rivals 3-km from the finish to grab his first victory in a Grand Tour.

Australia's Cameron Meyer was second, four seconds back, with Spain's Juan Antonio Flecha third.

Cummings broke his pelvis during the Tour of the Algarve in February and his left wrist in April while racing in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco.

The BMC Racing rider then crashed again during the Tour of California and the Tour de France.

"It's been a long, hard year and I crashed really badly in the Tour de France so I wasn't sure of my condition when I came here," Cummings told reporters.

"But I knew if I got through the first week alright things could start to get better."

Cummings, a silver medalist at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, said he knew most of the attention would be on the leading riders towards the end of the stage.

"I had to make one big attack and make it count. It was the perfect moment to go," he explained.

A dedicated team worker, Cummings was the only Briton in this year's Tour de France not to win a stage so achieving a lifelong ambition in Spain held extra significance.

"When I was a kid I always watched the Giro d'Italia, Tour and Vuelta and dreamed of taking a stage in one of them," he said.

"But opportunities are very limited particularly if you're working for a team leader. I don't feel I've reached my top condition yet.

"Hopefully there are a few more stage wins out there for the team in the Vuelta."

Race leader Rodriguez is 13 seconds clear of Contador, competing in a main Tour for the first time since serving a doping ban.

Saturday's stage, the first of three high mountain stages in succession, is expected to shake up the leaderboard.

Race leader Rodriguez said anything could happen over the next three days.

"I've only got a 13-second advantage and if I'm still in the lead on Tuesday then I would say I'm best-placed to win but not now," he said.

The race ends in Madrid on September 9.

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania | Fri Aug 31, 2012 12:54pm EDT

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - Penn State on Saturday plays its first football game since an agonizing off-season, when ex-assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted of child sex abuse, legendary former head coach Joe Paterno died and the NCAA stripped the university of 111 wins.

The delirium that normally precedes the season at Penn State has been replaced by exhaustion.

With the nationally televised game against Ohio University set to kick off at noon EDT, there are no "Beat the Bobcats" signs on campus. The Paterno statue that attracted the faithful outside of Beaver Stadium has been replaced by two large green mounds of grass.

Yellow balloons scattered about campus promote "Fresh Start," referring to a volunteer day of service, not football.

"There is fatigue over the Sandusky scandal," said Jed Donahue, a sports talk radio host in Pennsylvania who has been covering the university since 1986 and has been listening to the laments of fans and alumni for the past 10 months.

"This will be the first game they've played since Sandusky was convicted, the NCAA sanctions. I mean, they've been like a piñata; they've really been hit around, hit hard," Donahue said.

The somber mood may change once the anticipated 100,000 fans pack into Beaver Stadium and take up the thunderous cheer in which one side bellows "We are ..." and the other side answers "Penn State."

For now, the Sandusky scandal still hangs over the university, belying the image of "Happy Valley," as the area is known, and the school's motto of "Success with Honor."

A banner hanging on the Osmond Laboratory invited students to seek a "mantra of happiness," but the enticement was for a clinic on the "yoga of sound vibration" and not about the sound grandstands make when fans stomp in unison.

A Centre County grand jury last November charged Sandusky with multiple counts of child sexual abuse from 1994 to 2009. A jury in June would convict him of 45 of 48 counts for abusing 10 boys, and he faces a sentence of hundreds of years in prison.

A HORRIBLE YEAR

Shortly after the charges became known, Paterno announced he would retire at the end of the 2011 football season, but the university board of trustees instead said Paterno and university President Graham Spanier had been fired, effective immediately. Paterno died two months later at age 85.

In July, a scathing report by former FBI director Louis Freeh accused Paterno and others of covering up Sandusky's abuse for years to protect a multimillion-dollar football program.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association then issued an unprecedented penalty, fining the university $60 million, erasing 14 years of victories and banning Penn State from bowl games for four seasons.

In response, the university has taken measures to raise awareness of child sexual abuse, including an investment of $1.1 million in the Center for the Protection of Children in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Money from the NCAA fine will go into a fund meant to prevent child abuse and protect victims.

Penn State has planned a conference in October to discuss prevention and care for victims, and one vendor is selling blue T-shirts to raise money for rape victims with the slogan: "We are ... one team, one school, one heart, one promise."

Still, with a new season set to begin, few want to reflect on the tumultuous past.

Penn State's public information and sports information departments declined Reuters requests for comment.

A burly student wearing a T-shirt with the anti-NCAA slogan "We Are ... Pissed Off" quickened his pace when a visitor identified himself as a reporter. A female student said she could only talk without being identified because "I'm an athlete, and we're not supposed to talk."

Others were distracted by the start of the semester. New students were walking around with campus maps, and many could be heard asking for directions.

Storekeepers on College Avenue, where shops offer an array of slogan-filled T-shirts, also declined to be interviewed.

"When you talk to Penn State fans and alumni, they love this team," Donahue said. "Because the guys that came back and didn't transfer are coming with the Penn State name and now (their last names are) on the back of their jerseys."

Mannings take center stage as 2012 NFL season kicks off

Fri Aug 31, 2012 1:42pm EDT

(Reuters) - Peyton Manning returns to work next week looking to reassert his credentials as the gold medal standard for National Football League (NFL) quarterbacks after pacing the sidelines last season recovering from a fourth neck surgery.

But the NFL landscape can change quickly and Manning may not even be the best quarterback in his family anymore with younger brother Eli making a case for that status after leading the New York Giants to a second Super Bowl title in four years.

While Eli's stock has skyrocketed heading into the 2012 NFL season starting on Wednesday, Peyton has been downgraded from blue chip to speculative commodity after sitting out last season recovering from neck fusion surgery.

Certainly, the Indianapolis Colts considered Peyton a risky investment when they released the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) in March after 14 years of distinguished service and a Super Bowl title rather than pay his $28 million bonus.

Others, however, were willing to roll the dice.

The Denver Broncos were among a handful of teams courting Manning before ultimately winning him over with a five-year $96 million contract, taking a gamble that the 36-year-old, 11-time Pro Bowl quarterback can lead them to a Super Bowl.

"I don't consider it much of a risk," Broncos vice-president of football operations John Elway told reporters after signing Manning. "Obviously, the expectation level's going to go up but that's where we want it be, too."

Talk about who was the NFL's top quarterback used to begin with Manning but now he is barely part of the discussion with MVP Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers), Tom Brady (New England Patriots), Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints) and Eli Manning hogging the conversation.

REBUILDING PROJECT

The season could begin with a quarterback controversy with fourth-year New York Jets starter Mark Sanchez, already under fire for the team's preseason woes, and popular backup Tim Tebow firmly in the media crosshairs.

Cast out of the Mile High City after Denver landed Manning, the charismatic Tebow, who last year became a worldwide sporting phenomenon for his late-game heroics and displays of faith, has arrived on Broadway, putting pressure on Sanchez to perform or risk losing his starting job.

With as many as nine rookie or sophomore quarterbacks ready to start for their respective teams the new campaign will open to plenty of second-guessing and intrigue.

Adding to the intrigue will be the use of replacement referees for at least the first week of the regular season given a contractual dispute between the NFL and its officials. Their work over the preseason has already drawn complaints.

Andrew Luck, the top pick in this year's draft, is the cornerstone of the rebuilding project for the Colts while the Washington Redskins put their fate in the hands of Robert Griffin III, a Heisman Trophy winner as the top U.S. college player who was taken with the second pick.

Luck and Griffin have received most of attention but Ryan Tannehill, the eighth overall pick, will get a chance to enter the mix after being named the starter for the Miami Dolphins.

Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers), who had one of the best rookie seasons for a quarterback, Christian Ponder (Minnesota Vikings) and Andy Dalton (Cincinnati Bengals) will be among the second-year starters under scrutiny along with former number one picks Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) and Sam Bradford (St. Louis Rams).

One quarterback there are no questions about is Brady, who threw for over 5,000 yards last season while getting his team to the Super Bowl for the fifth time in 11 seasons.

The Patriots have been installed by oddsmakers as Super Bowl favorites and look the class of an AFC East that includes the Jets, Dolphins and Buffalo Bills, who have high expectations after landing two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Mario Williams.

BRUISING BATTLE

The AFC North is shaping up as another bruising battle between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers while the AFC West looks wide open with the Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs all in the mix.

Last season the Houston Texans reached the playoffs for the first time and, with quarterback Matt Schaub back from injury, look set to reign over a weak AFC South that features the Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.

Over in the NFC, the Packers, Saints and San Francisco 49ers all look poised to repeat as division champions.

Green Bay, led by a top ranked offense, stormed through last year's regular season with a 15-1 mark but will need to see an improvement in a defense that ranked last in yards surrendered if they are to fend off challenges in the NFC North from the improving Lions and Chicago Bears.

After tense contract negotiations, the Saints will rely on Brees to see the team through its darkest time since being forced out of town by Hurricane Katrina.

Brees, who smashed the single season passing record tossing for 5,476 yards in 2011, may need to do that and more if the Saints are to again top the NFC South after the NFL uncovered a bounty system that paid players for injuring opponents.

The scandal resulted in punishing penalties, including the suspension of head coach Sean Payton for the entire season.

The 49ers, last season's surprise package going 13-3 to reach the conference final, should easily be the best of the NFC West with the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams all scrambling to keep pace.

In contrast, the NFC East should be a dogfight with the Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Redskins battling for the division crown.
