TORONTO | Thu Nov 1, 2012 1:53am EDT

TORONTO (Reuters) - With ice hockey on hold due to the NHL's protracted labor dispute sports fans in Toronto turned to basketball for their Halloween entertainment on Wednesday, but despite giving Indiana a scare the Raptors lost 90-88 in their NBA season opener.

George Hill's lay-up with two seconds left clinched the win for the visiting Pacers at the Air Canada Centre, but the rebuilding Raptors delivered enough tricks and treats to give encouragement to head coach Dwane Casey for the rest of the National Basketball Association regular season.

"Yes it hurts (to lose) but there are so many positives I am looking at against one of the top teams in the NBA," Casey told reporters. "I like what I see. We've got a lot of good stuff going. A lot of positives."

With the NHL players who Canadians traditionally idolize scattered across the globe amid the labor dispute, Toronto hopes to build their fan base in ice hockey's absence and may have found a new favorite in Lithuanian Jonas Valanciunas.

The rookie seven-foot center had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in his debut and showed plenty of grit going head-to-head against the Pacers' towering Roy Hibbert.

"Didn't win but it was a good game, a hard game, we showed that we can compete against them," said Valanciunas, who was taken with fifth overall by the Raptors in the 2011 draft.

"We fight well. I try to learn from my mistakes, the coach gave me advice on how to defend Hibbert. I don't like to comment on my game, I will let the coach decide what I did good."

Trailing by 10 points with six minutes to play, the Pacers showed why they are expected to be a force in the Eastern Conference this season, coming back to get the win without Danny Granger, who is sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury.

David West had a game high 25 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, while Paul George had 14 and 15 rebounds. Hibbert also chipped in with 14 points for the Pacers.

"David put us on his shoulders in the fourth quarter, at both ends of the court, and just carried us," said Pacers coach Frank Vogel. "This victory is squarely on his shoulders."

Newly acquired Kyle Lowry had 21 points and eight assists to lead the Raptors, while Andrea Bargnani had 16 points and Jose Calderon 15 coming off the bench.

DeMar DeRozan, who signed a four-year contract extension for a reported $38 million with the Raptors before the opening tip-off, had 10 points and five rebounds.

GreenEDGE sack sports director White in doping scandal
Nov 1st 2012, 05:20

SYDNEY | Thu Nov 1, 2012 1:19am EDT

SYDNEY (Reuters) - The Orica-GreenEDGE team has sacked sports director Matt White after he admitted to doping while riding with Lance Armstrong's U.S. Postal cycling team.

White voluntarily stood down from the position last month pending an inquiry when he admitted doping after being named in the United States Anti-Doping Agency's (USADA) dossier on Armstrong.

The 38-year-old was also sacked from his position as elite men's road coordinator at Cycling Australia (CA) last month for the same reason.

"Orica-GreenEDGE is a clean team and our commitment to being clean has been a foundation principle of the team since the day of its inception," team owner Gerry Ryan said in a statement.

"Professional cycling is at a crossroads. The future of the sport is being determined by what we do today.

"(We) will not step back from taking any necessary decision to protect the integrity of the sport and the team and to restore the confidence of cycling fans around the world."

American Armstrong, who won the Tour de France a record seven times from 1999 to 2005, has been stripped of his titles after being accused of being a central figure in an elaborate doping regime.

Clippers overcome Grizzlies to claim season-opener

LOS ANGELES | Thu Nov 1, 2012 2:04am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles Clippers picked up where they left off in their budding rivalry with the Memphis Grizzlies, claiming a 101-92 home triumph in the season-opener for both teams on Wednesday.

Facing a Grizzlies side they edged out over seven games in the Western Conference first-round playoffs last season, the Clippers prevailed in a scrappy contest courtesy of a strong fourth quarter.

Chris Paul had a quiet night before emerging with six straight points late in the game to turn a one-point Clippers lead into a 93-88 advantage.

Off-season acquisition Jamal Crawford then brought the victory home in the last three minutes with a laser-like three-pointer and a driving layup that put the Clippers 98-90 ahead.

Crawford wasted little time endearing himself with the home fans on his Clippers debut by recording a game-high 29 points, including 12 in the pivotal fourth.

Rudy Gay led Memphis with 25 points and Marc Gasol added 20 in a game that witnessed more bad blood between the teams.

Physical big men Blake Griffin of Los Angeles and the Grizzlies' Zach Randolph locked horns throughout the playoff series and the pair again engaged in a series of bruising encounters before each drawing technical fouls in the fourth.

Bruin double douses Fire, puts Dynamo into semis
Nov 1st 2012, 04:04

Thu Nov 1, 2012 12:04am EDT

(Reuters) - Will Bruin scored twice to give Houston a 2-1 win at Chicago Fire in the Major League Soccer playoffs on Wednesday, earning Dynamo a place in the Eastern Conference semi-finals against Sporting Kansas City.

Houston, twice MLS Cup winners and last season's runners-up, will battle the Eastern Conference's top team from the regular season over two legs starting at their own BBVA Compass stadium on Sunday.

Bruin headed Houston ahead from a Brad Davis corner in the 13th minute after his marker, Jalil Anibaba, slipped and left him unattended.

Dynamo should have doubled their lead three minutes before the break when from another corner defender Bobby Boswell was left alone but he headed over from a good position.

Less than a minute into the second half, however, Houston did find the second goal as Ricardo Clark won the ball in midfield and found Calen Carr, who slipped through Bruin to fire home.

Chicago finally came alive in the last 15 minutes with Dynamo keeper Tally Hall doing well to push a Patrick Nyarko effort round the post.

Seven minutes from the end, Brazilian Alex fired home off the inside of the far post but despite some frantic attacks the Fire could not prevent their postseason campaign ending at the first hurdle.

Reuters: Sports News: Unfit Tomic looks like a "lost soul", says first coach

Unfit Tomic looks like a "lost soul", says first coach
Nov 1st 2012, 00:51

By Nick Mulvenney

SYDNEY | Wed Oct 31, 2012 8:51pm EDT

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Bernard Tomic looks like a "lost soul" out on the tennis court and is simply not fit enough to compete at the top level of tennis at the moment, according to his first coach.

After a breakthrough year in 2011 and rising to number 27 in the world earlier this year, Australian Tomic has suffered a slump in form and a long run of first round losses.

Neil Guiney, who nurtured Tomic's talent from the age of seven, said he could barely watch his former protégé play anymore.

"There is no inventiveness, there is no change of game," Guiney told the Australian newspaper.

"There is just this constant plod, plod, plod. I think that is in his mind. He is not fit enough to do what he is trying to do and once his bubble is burst or he loses a set, it just gets worse. You don't see him dig in.

"It is every match now. I can hardly bear to watch him. He is not out there fighting. He is going through the motions and going nowhere."

That lack of staying power has earned the German-born 20-year-old the nickname "Tomic the Tank Engine" and problems with police off the court have only compounded his miserable year.

With Australian tennis still looking to Tomic as their great hope for the future, there have been several calls for him to dump his father John as coach.

Guiney said he thought the relationship now looked "dysfunctional".

"One of his problems is Bernard knows a lot more about it than his father now," he added. "His father is there calling the tune and screaming and yelling and Bernard just shuts his ears.

"So you have got a terrible situation there. He is out of his depth and I think John is out of his depth."

Tomic, who turned 20 only last week, reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last year and put in an impressive performance against Roger Federer in the last 16 of the Australian Open at the start of 2012.

After his recent run of form, though, Guiney said it was time for Tomic to make some tough decisions about his future.

"He is just floundering at the moment," the 80-year-old said.

"He goes out there and he is really not competing. Once the pressure really comes on, he just folds. No one knows exactly what is going on in Bernard's mind, but he looks to me like a lost soul out there.

"There is a hell of a lot at stake at the moment and he is really at that point in the road where he has got to take stock."

Guard Curry signs multi-year extension with the Warriors
Oct 31st 2012, 23:05

Wed Oct 31, 2012 7:05pm EDT

(Reuters) - The Golden State Warriors have signed their point guard Stephen Curry to a multi-year contract extension, the National Basketball Association (NBA) team announced on Wednesday.

Though financial details were not disclosed by the Warriors, local media estimate the deal to be worth $44 million over four years.

The seventh overall pick by Golden State in the 2009 draft, Curry was selected for the NBA's All-Rookie First Team in 2010 and has averaged 17.5 points and 5.8 assists per game in his three years with the Warriors.

"We're extremely pleased that we have reached an agreement that will enable Stephen to remain a vital part of our team long term," Warriors general manager Bob Myers said in a statement.

"His contributions over the last three years, both on the floor and in the community, have been invaluable to our organization.

"We certainly expect him to be an integral part of our future success as he continues to evolve as a player in all facets of the game."

Curry, 24, was restricted to just 26 games last season because of a sprained right ankle that required surgery.

Reuters: Sports News: Horseracing: Game On Dude is Breeders' top attraction

Horseracing: Game On Dude is Breeders' top attraction
Oct 31st 2012, 21:28

By Julian Linden

Wed Oct 31, 2012 5:28pm EDT

(Reuters) - Game On Dude has been installed as the overwhelming favorite to win Saturday's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, the feature event in the annual two-day racing carnival that gets underway at Santa Anita Park on Friday.

Game On Dude finished an agonizingly close second in last year's one-and-a-quarter mile classic at Churchill Downs in Kentucky and has been elevated to the 9-5 favorite to make amends this week in North America's richest horserace.

A consistent performer at the highest level, the five-year-old-gelding has won four of his six starts this season and has the advantage of running at his home track in Arcadia, California but the shortened odds are as much a reflection of the lack of a star opponent than his own accomplishments.

Although the Breeders' Cup is billed as the world championship of thoroughbred racing, most of the world's top horses will be missing this year and there is not a single foreign-trained galloper in the main race.

British superstar Frankel was retired two weeks ago, ending his unbeaten career at Ascot, while Australian sprinting sensation Black Caviar, who is also unbeaten, remained at home despite making the long trip to England earlier this year.

Even America's top horses are absent, including last year's winner Drosselmeyer. He never raced again after his surprise win under the Twin Spires but the cream of this year's new crop is also missing.

I'll Have Another, who won this year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, was retired to stud after suffering an injury on the eve of what would have been his tilt at the elusive Triple Crown.

Union Rags, which won the Belmont Stakes after I'll Have Another was scratched, is also missing from the fields, even though there is a total of more than $25 million on offer from the 15 races.

There is still a strong European contingent in the program with 26 horses making the long trip to the United States, most of them opting for the races on grass while the locals prefer dirt.

FIRST VICTORY

Game On Dude is prepared by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who is chasing his first victory in the race, having enjoyed success in most of the other top races in the United States.

"He's a better horse this year," Baffert said after Game On Dude drew post number five in the 12-runner field. "He seems more relaxed. He's getting better with age."

Last year's beaten classic favorite Flat Out was listed as the second picked at 5-1, alongside Fort Larned, while Ron the Greek was next at 6-1, followed by Mucho Macho Man and To Honor and Serve, who were both 8-1 chances.

Flat Out, Ron the Greek and To Honor And Serve are all prepared by master trainer Bill Mott, who has won three times before, including last year.

"We train them all as individuals and we want to give each horse their best chance," Mott said.

"All three horses are trained for different owners and all three horses have earned their way into this race."

Mott also trains Royal Delta, the 9-5 favorite for Friday's $2 million Ladies' Classic. Royal Delta won the same race last year and the filly is back to defend her title as a four-year-old.

The only female horse to win the Classic was Zenyatta, in 2009. Mott considered entering Royal Delta, but opted for the easier race although he said he might run her in the Classic next year.

"I felt that running against the girls was probably the way to go," he said. "I guess it's a conservative approach but we have discussed Royal Delta running next year."

More than a dozen New York-based horses had their travel plans changed at the last minute to allow them to get on a flight before Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the East Coast. All arrived safe and are ready to run in the meeting.

Six races will be held on Friday, then the remaining nine on Saturday.

Nets and Knicks season opener postponed due to Sandy

Wed Oct 31, 2012 4:22pm EDT

(Reuters) - The season opener between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets set for Thursday at the Barclays Center has been postponed due to havoc caused by Hurricane Sandy, the National Basketball Association (NBA) said on Wednesday.

The game will be rescheduled for a later date.

"Mayor Bloomberg informed us this afternoon that after further analysis of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy that he felt it was in the best interests of the city of New York, the teams and our fans that we postpone the Knicks-Nets game scheduled for Thursday night," NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.

While the Barclays Center was not damaged by the super storm that pounded the eastern United States on Monday, New York's subway system was swamped leaving transportation in and around the city at a near standstill.

The NBA did not provide updates on the status of Friday's game between the Knicks and the NBA champion Miami Heat at Madison Square Garden and Saturday's game at the Barclays Center between the Nets the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO | Wed Oct 31, 2012 3:13pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Thousands of fans resplendent in orange and black choked downtown San Francisco's largest thoroughfare on Wednesday, noisily celebrating the Giants' second World Series baseball title in three years.

Giants faithful journeyed from all over the Bay Area from dawn to stake out a clear view of a celebratory parade that kicked off with a military band and featured floats, cheerleaders, double-decker buses and replicas of the city's iconic cable cars along a three-mile route from the eastern ferry terminus to the Civic Center in the heart of downtown.

Giants club members and players including Series Most Valuable Player Pablo "Panda" Sandoval and National League Championship MVP Marco Scutaro, city dignitaries like Mayor Ed Lee, and baseball Hall of Famers like Willie Mays perched atop open-top convertibles and waved to the crowds.

Estafania Acosta had hustled all the way from Colma, about 10 miles south of San Francisco, with her nine-month old son Salvador strapped snugly to her front.

"He's a Giants fan too and we wouldn't have missed it!" said the proud mother, who made sure both were appropriately attired in the Giants colors of orange, white and black.

The San Francisco Giants, a team boasting a large roster of homegrown talent, overcame several post-season close calls, mid-season injuries and talent losses to eventually sweep the Detroit Tigers in four games last week, enroute to their second title since 2010.

Exuberant fans -- some already clutching beer cans in the wee hours -- mugged for television cameras or just capered to popular tunes like South Korean star PSY's viral hit "Gangnam Style". Children that had cut classes on a school day were sprinkled liberally throughout the crowd.

Many came with recollections of the victory parade of 2010, an epic street party they hoped to reprise in 2012.

Work slowed to a crawl as office workers packed the windows of the glass-and-steel towers of the financial district, enjoying a ringside view of the city's biggest ticker-tape procession in years.

Hundreds of thousands of fans were expected to show up for a victory parade that this year coincides with Halloween, a happenstance that ensured many in the crowd thronging Market Street turned up as witches or assorted ghouls.

PG&E employee Sophia Rin, 33, missed the festivities two years ago but isn't letting this one slip away. She took the day off to come all the way from Stockton with her face painted like one of the undead.

"Today is a celebration of Halloween and dia de los muertos(day of the dead), but it's dia de los Giantes (day of the Giants)!" she exclaimed. "I wouldn't ever miss this."

Pitcher Ryan Vogelsong, interviewed by local station KRON before the procession began, was only beginning the grasp the significance of the event.

"It hadn't sunk in until this morning, and now I'm seeing all these people and realizing what're doing here," Vogelsong told local TV channel KRON.

"This whole thing is special."

NEW YORK | Wed Oct 31, 2012 2:11pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York City Marathon, one of the premier distance running events in the country, should go ahead as planned on Sunday, but race organizers are awaiting final go-ahead authorization from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the head of the race's organizing group said.

Mary Wittenburg, president and chief executive of the New York Road Runners, said on Wednesday the decision whether to hold the race was "entirely" in the mayor's hands.

The race draws tens of thousands of participants, including some of the world's elite distance athletes. In 2011, more than 47,000 runners finished the race, according to the event's website.

SAO PAULO | Wed Oct 31, 2012 10:11am EDT

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - When Brazil won the right to host the 2014 World Cup, officials vowed it would be the best and most transparent tournament ever and that hardly a cent of taxpayer money would be spent on stadiums and infrastructure.

Today, with the opening match less than two years away, those claims look shaky.

Organizers have set up websites where the public can monitor construction work and cash outlays, an exercise in transparency that officials say is new in Brazil.

But critics say the information is often contradictory or out of date. The cost of stadiums and public transport projects has spiraled and authorities have yet to disclose the budget for key areas such as telecommunications and policing.

Officials boasted that tracking spending would be "so easy that any citizen could sit on his sofa and see where the money was being spent," said Gil Castello Branco, the secretary general of Contas Abertas, a non-profit group that monitors public expenditures.

"But it doesn't matter if you're on the sofa, in the kitchen, or at the office, no one knows how much this is costing," he added.

Cost overruns are not unusual for nations preparing to host events like the World Cup and Olympics. But some say that issues of transparency and accountability are particularly worrying in Brazil, which has a long history of corruption and poor planning.

"The World Cup reflects the state of the country where it happens," said Christopher Gaffney, an American professor of architecture and urban planning who lives in Rio and is studying Brazil's preparations for the big events. "And the Brazilian government doesn't have a strong record of transparency."

Brazil is also hosting the next Olympics, in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

The cost of stadiums and transport infrastructure for the World Cup is officially put at 27.1 billion reais ($13.3 billion), almost half of which will go to public transport. Most of the rest will be split almost evenly between stadiums and airports, which are in desperate need of an upgrade.

The majority of the cash is coming from public coffers, with three different websites monitoring construction and spending. One is run by the sports ministry, another by the Senate and a third by the Office of the Comptroller General, or CGU. The TCU, a government agency that audits public spending, also issues periodic reports.

The problem, critics say, is that the sites are unreliable.

"The information we get is incomplete, contradictory and late," said Castello Branco. "And frequently misleading."

'COMMUNICATION COULD BE BETTER'

The data for stadiums, for example, is different on the three sites. The sports ministry says the Amazônia Arena in Manaus will cost 532.2 million reais; the CGU site says it will cost 515 million reais; the Senate site says 505 million reais.

The Senate site says Rio's Maracanã stadium will eventually hold 79,378 people; the sports ministry put the number at around 79,000; the CGU gives no number at all.

In others, the information appears deliberately opaque.

The sports ministry site says the Itaquera stadium in Sao Paulo will have 65,000 seats and cost 820 million reais. That price tag, however, is for a stadium of 48,000 seats.

An additional 20,000 seats will be added for the tournament and then removed. The Sao Paulo state government is paying for the seats to be installed and removed, but more than a year after the contract was signed it has yet to say how much that will cost.

The state government said it was "studying several ways to resolve the issue" but declined to make an official available for an interview.

"Communication could be better," said Luis Fernandes, the executive secretary at the sports ministry.

Still, Fernandes defended the federal government's attempts at transparency and said it relied on construction companies, as well as municipal and state authorities, to keep it -- and the public -- informed.

CONFUSION IN RECIFE

The disconnect over the cost of the Arena Pernambuco is a case in point. The stadium near the northeastern city of Recife was originally slated to cost 532 million reais and be ready six months before the World Cup.

But authorities decided to build the 46,000-seat stadium in 26 months rather than 36 so it could host games in next June's Confederations Cup, the warm-up to the big jamboree in 2014.

A year has passed since that decision, and authorities still have not said how much more it will cost to build at a faster pace, nor is an estimate available online.

"If there is an increase in the cost of the job it will be immediately communicated and put online at the transparency site," Fernandes said.

Odebrecht, the company building the stadium, acknowledged that costs will go up but could not specify by how much.

"I can't say how much," said Marcus Lessa, the managing director of Arena Pernambuco, a consortium headed by Odebrecht. "But it is not a lack of transparency, the costs will be audited."

Fernandes cautioned that only changes amounting to more than 20 percent of the total cost are immediately registered on transparency sites. It would be too time consuming to update with every minor tweak to each project, he said.

CGU officials acknowledged that some of the information is outdated or contradictory and said they are discussing streamlining the system by acting as a clearing house for transparency-related World Cup information.

Under the proposed system, the CGU would receive data on spending and progress from states and municipalities and pass it on to government ministries and agencies. That would mean the different sites will all have the same information and also reduce the burden on states and municipalities, which currently have to report several times a month to different institutions.

"In addition to making that information available on our portal we will put in a data bank and anyone can have access to it," said Fabio Santana, who advises the CGU on transparency.

Whatever the discrepancies, officials say they are happy with the sites and the advances they represent. Just introducing such systems in a nation known for its lax oversight of public spending marks a change for the better, Fernandes said.

"It is a positive step forward and I'd even say it is one of the legacies of the World Cup," he said.

South Korean protest player finally gets soccer medal

SEOUL | Wed Oct 31, 2012 2:27am EDT

SEOUL (Reuters) - The South Korean soccer player who inflamed a diplomatic row with Japan by waving a political placard at the London Olympics is finally set to receive his bronze medal.

Park Jong-woo, banned from the medal ceremony at Wembley, has received a certificate confirming he would receive it, the Korea Football Association (KFA) said on Wednesday.

The midfielder held up a sign referring to a territorial dispute between South Korea and Japan while celebrating a 2-0 win over their fierce rivals in the Olympic bronze medal match.

The placard, which read "Dokdo is our territory", sparked further controversy following a surprise visit to the islands, known in Japan as Takeshima, by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak before the match in August.

Park was handed the sign by a fan but his actions prompted soccer's world governing body FIFA to open disciplinary proceedings against him.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has finally signed off on his medal.

"The Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) handed over the certificates to the KFA on Tuesday," the KFA told Yonhap news agency. "Park Jong-woo's certificate was included."

FIFA has yet to reach a decision on his case.

The KFA described Park's act as "impulsive" but stopped short of apologising to their Japanese counterparts, while South Korean military officials called him "courageous".

Park was granted exemption from military service with his team mates for their bronze medal showing in London.

The disputed islands, controlled by South Korea but also claimed by Japan, lie equidistant from the two countries and are believed to contain frozen natural gas deposits potentially worth billions of dollars.

SHENZHEN, China | Wed Oct 31, 2012 2:38am EDT

SHENZHEN, China (Reuters) - After climbing to a career high fifth in the world rankings and featuring in Europe's Ryder Cup victory, Justin Rose could be forgiven for resting on his laurels as the 2012 season draws to a close.

Since he has been mining a rich vein of form in recent months, however, the Briton has his eye on yet more glory before putting away his clubs for the year.

When he tees up in the first round of the $7 million HSBC Champions event at Mission Hills on Thursday, Rose's first target will be to add a second World Golf Championship title to the Cadillac Championship he won at Doral in March.

That could be the stepping stone to his final ambition of 2012, coming out on top of what looks being a tight finish to the European Tour's Race to Dubai.

That would give him a second European Order of Merit triumph to add to the one he achieved in 2007, when he outpaced major winners Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington by winning the end of season Volvo Masters at Valderrama in Spain.

The 32-year-old Englishman currently lies third in the money list, 888,774 euros ($1.15 million) behind leader and world number one Rory McIlroy.

The Ulsterman is not in China, however, having opted instead to take a week off and follow his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki play her final WTA tennis event of the year in Bulgaria.

A Rose victory on Sunday would earn him 921,376 euros and take him past McIlroy with just two weeks of tournaments to be played before the Race comes to a climax in the United Arab Emirates in three weeks time.

Since Rose will not be playing at the Singapore Open or Hong Kong Open, let alone the South African Open which also counts towards the final tally, his four rounds in China could prove crucial to his chances.

"The goal this week is to give myself a chance going into Dubai," Rose said on Wednesday.

"That would mean trying to put myself to within the difference between first and second prize money in Dubai - knowing that if I win there and Rory finishes second, I can still win the race.

"I am in Rory's hands to a certain extent but I know I have to win this week to give myself that chance. So from the race to Dubai perspective it's a very important week this week."

Rose certainly feels his golf is in good enough shape to achieve his aim, having finished second in the U.S. Tour Championship before the Ryder Cup and then winning the inaugural World Golf Final after playing for Europe at Medinah.

"I am definitely in a good run of form," he said. "I am proud about this year as a whole.

"To this point it's the consistency I have had that I have been most pleased with and every time I tee off I feel my game is there or thereabouts and that gives me confidence coming into this week."

Rose, however, should not discount a third name in the Race to Dubai frame.

McIlroy would also be overtaken at the top of the money list if Swede Peter Hanson managed to win a second straight title on Sunday afternoon after last week's BMW Masters triumph in Shanghai. ($1 = 0.7705 euros)

LOS ANGELES | Wed Oct 31, 2012 1:51am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The heavily anticipated new era of Los Angeles Lakers basketball began with a whimper on Tuesday as their much vaunted team bristling with All-Stars were beaten 99-91 by an under-strength Dallas Mavericks.

Five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant had given the Lakers a late boost when he pronounced himself fit enough to play in the regular season opener shortly before the game, having struggled with a foot injury for more than a week.

Though Bryant scored 22 points on 11-of-14 shooting and Spanish forward Pau Gasol weighed in with a game-high 23, the Lakers paid the penalty for a dismal free-throw display, making only 12-of-31.

The Mavericks were without 11-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, who is recovering from knee surgery, and injured center Chris Kaman but in their absence, six Dallas players scored at least 10 points with guard Darren Collison leading the way with 17.

Brandan Wright contributed 14 and fellow forward Shawn Marion 11 as the Mavericks stunned the 16-time NBA champion Lakers despite being out-shot from the field by 49.4 percent to 47.1.

The atmosphere was electric under the rafters at the Staples Center well before the start of the game as Lakers fans prepared to watch their potent, new-look front five for the first time.

Huge cheers erupted when former Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard led the Lakers out onto the court for their warm-up, and even louder roars for Bryant, the last player out.

Shortly before tip-off, Bryant walked to the middle of the court with microphone in hand and said: "There's a lot of expectations this season so we will to try and bring another championship back home to Los Angeles. Let's get this party started! Enjoy the show."

With Bryant, Howard and Gasol all getting into the paint early on, the Lakers made an encouraging start and led by eight points after an Antawn Jamison layup less than a minute into the second period.

However, a rash of missed free throws and turnovers cost the Lakers dearly. They trailed 48-46 at halftime and were never able to close the gap after that as the faster Mavericks steadily increased their lead.

Two O.J. Mayo free throws late in the fourth quarter gave Dallas a 16-point advantage, the biggest of the night, and though the Lakers scored nine of the last 10 points, it was a case of too little too late.

Six-time All-Star Howard, still easing his way into form after having back surgery in April, produced 19 points while twice former Most Valuable Player Steve Nash contributed just seven, plus four assists, on their Lakers debuts.
