(Reuters) - David Beckham has targeted one final fling in the European Champions League before hanging up his boots once he leaves Los Angeles after five-and-a-half years.

"I always loved it when I went back to AC Milan being back in the Champions League," the 37-year-old told British media as he prepared for his last game for the L.A. Galaxy.

"I still miss playing in it, they are the games you love playing in. Of course I'd want to play in it again," he added before Saturday's MLS Cup final against Houston Dynamo.

"We'll see where I go next. If it's a team that's in the Champions League then it will be nice to be back."

Former England captain Beckham admitted watching former Manchester United team mates Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs still playing in Europe's top competition gave him added incentive.

"It's nice to see them still playing at Manchester United," said the former Real Madrid midfielder.

"They have had successful careers there and to see them playing like they do is great. I'm 37 years old, the same age as Scholesy, although Giggsy is even older than me.

"Me and Scholesy grew up together and played with Giggsy and it is great to see them still playing."

Beckham has been linked with French sides Paris St. Germain and Monaco, among others, although regular first-team minutes could be hard to come by at Carlo Ancelotti's big spending side.

GLOBAL CELEBRITY

"I plan to keep playing as long as I can," said Beckham, arguably the most recognizable athlete on the planet.

"I know when Scholesy stepped away he came back and regretted stopping. I want to continue to play as long as my legs will take me."

Beckham, who has an option to take an ownership share in a future MLS expansion team, denied money had ever been a factor in his transfers between clubs.

"My career has never been about money," insisted Beckham, who has a net worth of $260 million dollars, according to Forbes.

"I'm not money-motivated, I just want to play for the best team and with the best players. I know I will miss it when I finish playing.

"When I got my Achilles injury and I was out for six or seven months it gave me time to realize what it would be like. I kind of got a taste of it then and I didn't like it.

"It's going to happen at some point but ... I've got four kids so it's not like I'm not going to be busy."

Becoming an owner or part of the LA Galaxy ownership structure appeals more than becoming a manager to Beckham, who won six Premier League titles with United and one La Liga championship at Real Madrid.

"I'd like to be an owner because I don't want to be a manager," he said, also hinting at a possible future role as an ambassador for United.

"I love playing and coaching but I would rather be an owner."

Lakers find offensive range in rout of Nuggets
Dec 1st 2012, 06:25

Sat Dec 1, 2012 1:25am EST

(Reuters) - The Los Angeles Lakers rebounded from their worst offensive performance of the season with an all out blitz against the Denver Nuggets on Friday, prevailing 122-103 at the Staples Center.

Three nights after their last second loss to the Indiana Pacers in the same building where they managed to score just 77 points, 40 of which were Kobe Bryant's, the Lakers were on fire offensively across the board.

Dwight Howard played up to his big money reputation with 20 rebounds and 28 points, 16 of which came in the first quarter, with Antawn Jamison and Jodie Meeks coming off the bench to find their range.

Jamison top-scored with 33 points and added 12 rebounds while Meeks added 21 points from seven successful three-point bombs to help the Lakers improve to 8-8 on the year and drop the Nuggets to 8-9.

Bryant played a support role with 14 points and eight assists.

Globe trotting McDowell ready for a 10-week break
Dec 1st 2012, 02:21

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

THOUSAND OAKS, California | Fri Nov 30, 2012 9:21pm EST

THOUSAND OAKS, California (Reuters) - Graeme McDowell will take a 10-week break after the World Challenge ends on Sunday to recharge his batteries for a hectic 2013 campaign on both sides of the Atlantic.

The globe-trotting Northern Irishman competes regularly on the PGA and European tours and has decided to finish his 2013 U.S. schedule in August, earlier than usual, before switching his focus to the late-season flurry of events in Europe.

"I'm probably going to have to play 14 (PGA Tour) events between February and August, as opposed to 15 between January and October," McDowell told reporters after firing a six-under-par 66 at Sherwood Country Club on Friday.

"Our version of the playoffs (on the European Tour) makes the end of the year pretty full on. When the guys on this side of the pond are sort of hanging their clubs up for a couple of months, we're kind of putting the pedal down in Europe.

"We have a lot of quality events around the world with golf as healthy as it is, but it makes it pretty difficult for a two-tour guy like me," added the Northern Irishman, a seven-time winner on the European Tour. "It's a lot of golf."

The final six events on the 2013 European Tour will be staged in Portugal, Australia, China, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

McDowell, who will take a three-shot lead into Saturday's third round of the World Challenge as he seeks a first tournament victory in two years, relishes the prospect of a 10-week break before taking on his busy 2013 schedule.

"I'm looking to the next 10 weeks off being a springboard to 2013," he smiled. "I would love to compete and play well this weekend, to put a little icing on what's been a mediocre year.

"Despite the fact that I feel like I've played some decent golf this year, I really don't have a lot to show for myself, and this would be a nice way to finish.

"Then these next 10 weeks are going to be very important to me to recharge and refocus and reset because I know I'm in a good place, both on and off the course, and I feel very positive about next season, regardless of what happens this weekend."

McDowell, who has not triumphed anywhere since a golden 2010 campaign highlighted by his first major victory at the U.S. Open and capped by a playoff win over Tiger Woods at the World Challenge, has a lot going on in his private life at the moment.

He announced his engagement to Kristin Stape in Dubai earlier this month and, with their wedding planned for late next year, will shortly be taking up a new residence in Florida.

"December will be very much recharging and relaxing and moving into my new house in Orlando and spending some time with friends and family," McDowell said.

"And January will be detoxing and practising and getting ready to do it all again, I suppose. It's been a long three years, four years (of competitive golf) for me and I'm look forward to some time off."

Prosecutors drop murder charges against U.S. Open tennis official

LOS ANGELES | Fri Nov 30, 2012 7:04pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles judge dismissed murder charges on Friday against a 70-year-old tennis lineswoman who was accused of beating her husband to death with a coffee mug and arrested in August as she prepared to officiate at the U.S. Open.

The dismissal was requested by prosecutors, who publicly gave little indication why they were dropping the case that they filed against Lois Goodman earlier this year. A Los Angeles County District Attorney's spokeswoman said in a terse statement only that "additional information" had come forward.

"Based upon this information, we announced that we are unable to proceed with the case at this time. The court granted our request to dismiss the case without prejudice," spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said.

"Because there is an ongoing police and district attorney's investigation, we will not make any further statements that might compromise that investigation," she said.

The decision by Superior Court Judge Jessica Silvers to dismiss the case without prejudice means that charges could be re-filed against Goodman in the future but Gibbons declined to say if such a move was likely.

"I'm so happy," Goodman told reporters outside court. "I feel wonderful. I've always maintained my innocence. It was just a tragic accident."

The tennis official, who faced a maximum sentence of life in prison if she had been convicted at trial, said prosecutors had done the "right thing" in dropping the case.

Goodman is well known in tennis circles and had worked at the annual U.S. Open Tennis Championships tournament for at least the past 10 years, mainly as a line judge, according to the U.S. Tennis Association.

"To put it mildly we had a big win today. The score is 40-love, game over," her attorney, Robert Sheahen, told Reuters in an interview.

Sheahen said he didn't believe that the case would be re-filed against his client. He said prosecutors had abandoned the case because it was "baseless" and could not be proven in court.

"Every piece of evidence that came in went in our favor: The polygraph, the DNA, the reconstruction of the scene. They finally decided they had no case. She's innocent. She didn't commit this crime; she didn't kill her husband, period," he said.

According to police, Goodman reported on April 17 that she had found her 80-year-old husband, Alan Goodman, dead in their home and surmised that he had suffered a heart attack and fallen down a flight of stairs.

But the death was ruled a homicide in August and Lois Goodman was charged with murder. She was arrested in New York City, where she had traveled to help officiate the U.S. Open.

Police said at the time that a search for evidence in the home turned up a broken coffee mug that roughly matched lacerations and contusions on Alan Goodman's head.

Defense lawyers contend that Alan Goodman's death was an accident, a conclusion they say was also originally reached by Los Angeles police detectives.

They also say that their client has passed a polygraph or "lie detector" test and that her DNA was not found on the mug, supporting their theory that Alan Goodman had been carrying a cup of coffee when he fell down the stairs.

Prosecutors have declined to comment on the lie-detector test, which was arranged by defense attorneys, or on the lack of DNA evidence.

Fri Nov 30, 2012 6:49pm EST

(Reuters) - The first weekend of December football signals the start of the NFL stretch run with Houston, New England, Denver, Baltimore and Atlanta poised to clinch playoff spots, while others fight to stay on the postseason path.

American Football Conference (AFC) division races look close to being locked up, but the National Football Conference is full of question marks with five weeks left in the regular season.

"This is when you need to be playing your best ball, heading into the playoff atmosphere," New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said this week. "This is when you want to be playing your best."

The Super Bowl champion Giants (7-4) could be dragged into a battle for the NFC East title by the Washington Redskins (5-6) and their gifted rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III, who could climb to within a game of New York with victory on Monday.

The Giants know they could have their hands full with the explosive Redskins quarterback. RG3 put Washington ahead with a late TD pass in their October meeting before Eli Manning threw a 77-yard bomb to Victor Cruz with 73 seconds left to win it.

The NFC North-leading Chicago Bears (8-3) entertain wildcard hopefuls the Seattle Seahawks (6-5), and the Green Bay Packers (7-4) host the Minnesota Vikings (6-5) in a key NFC North clash.

In one of the league's fiercest rivalries, the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-5) go up against AFC North-leading Ravens (9-2), desperate for a victory to fortify their wildcard aspirations.

The Steelers will be hard-pressed to avert a third straight loss as it looks likely they will be without injured starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

"I firmly believe that (Charlie Batch will play well)," Roethlisberger told reporters on Friday about the 37-year-old fill-in, who threw three interceptions in last week's loss to the Cleveland Browns.

"They know what he's capable of. He's been doing it a long time. They respect him. I think he's ready to rise to the occasion."

A key inter-conference game pits the hard-charging Denver Broncos (8-3) and MVP candidate quarterback Peyton Manning against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-5), who are clinging to their wildcard hopes.

"Our goal is to keep winning and get to the big one," said Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, whose team is riding a six-game winning streak.

Denver can clinch the AFC West division with a win or a San Diego loss to the wildcard hunting Cincinnati Bengals (6-5).

Baltimore can claim the AFC North crown with a win and a Bengals loss. A victory over the Steelers would ensure them of a playoff spot.

New England (8-3) takes another AFC East title if they beat the Miami Dolphins (5-6), while AFC-leading Houston (10-1) can secure a berth in the postseason with a win over the Tennessee Titans.

The Atlanta Falcons, 23-13 winners against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, would clinch the NFC South division if Tampa Bay loses, or a playoff berth should Seattle lose.

One fresh face among the top AFC teams belongs to the Indianapolis Colts (7-4) and rookie signal caller Andrew Luck, who take on the Detroit Lions (4-7).

At the moment, the Colts, who got to select Luck with the top pick in the NFL Draft because they had the league's worst record last season, would be in the playoffs.

BELGRADE | Fri Nov 30, 2012 5:49pm EST

BELGRADE (Reuters) - Former champions Emporio Armani Milan's fears of making an early exit from the EuroLeague grew after Friday's 64-62 defeat at Caja Laboral Vitoria completed an eventful week for coach Sergio Scariolo.

Elsewhere, 1992 winners Partizan Belgrade rekindled their hopes of reaching the last 16 with a dramatic 75-74 home victory over Lithuanians Lietuvos Rytas while Alba Berlin and Khimki Moscow advanced with contrasting victories.

Scariolo, who resigned as Spain coach on Wednesday having guided them to two successive European championship titles and the 2012 Olympic silver medal, saw Milan squander a 14-point halftime lead as Thomas Heurtel produced the game-winning shot for Caja.

Milan are fourth in their section with three wins and five defeats, ahead of Caja and Cedevita Zagreb who are breathing down their necks with two wins and six defeats apiece and two rounds left in the preliminary group stage of the 24-team competition.

Four teams from each of the four pools progress to the last 16 where they will be divided into two groups of eight.

Milan's last two games are against already-qualified Zalgiris Kaunas and holders Olympiakos Piraeus.

"It hurts to lose a game you dominated for almost 40 minutes and the fight for qualification is as uncertain as ever now," Scariolo told the competition's official website (www.euroleague.net).

"We must beat Zalgiris at home and go to Athens with no other thought than winning although it's going to be tough and we have to work on the things we did badly against Caja who showed great pride tonight," added the coach who took over at Milan in 2011.

Forward Fernando San Emeterio led Caja with a game-high 17 points, Polish centre Maciej Lampe scored 14 and Heurtel added 11 to go with five rebounds.

Alba beat Poland's Asseco Prokom Gdynia 67-64 after nearly throwing away an 11-point lead in the last quarter while Khimki romped to a 77-53 home rout of Italians Mapooro Cantu thanks to 14 points from Croatian guard Zoran Planinic and American centre Paul Davis.

FITS AND STARTS

Budget cuts have left Partizan with a modest but hard-working roster and they produced a heart-stopping victory over Lietuvos in a game where both teams played in fits and starts before a fervent 7,500 crowd in the Serbian capital.

Partizan led by eight points at the end of the third quarter but an 11-0 run hauled the visitors back into the match and forced a thrilling climax, only for their guard Renaldas Seibutis to narrowly miss the game-winning shot on the buzzer.

An eruption of joy followed in the Pionir Arena as the home players stayed on the court for 10 minutes to salute their passionate fans.

"Every EuroLeague win is important for this young team and although we are almost resigned to defeat against the likes of Barcelona, we have shown we can still stand our ground against anyone," Partizan coach Dusko Vujosevic told a news conference.

"It is so important to advance into the top 16 because that means another 14 games against high-quality opposition."

Partizan have suffered narrow defeats against six-times winners CSKA Moscow and double champions Barcelona but Latvian forward Davis Bertans made sure they were not on the receiving end this time with an effervescent 14-point performance.

The 20-year-old, provisionally selected by the Indiana Pacers in the 2011 NBA draft, buried four three-pointers from five attempts and most of them came when his team were reeling.

"The important thing is we are still in with a chance of reaching the top 16 and we are now looking forward to the final two games against Barcelona and Bamberg," said Bertans.

"We played with a lot of energy which definitely came from the fans and they were so noisy I am surprised they didn't bring the house down."

Montepaschi Siena booked their passage with a 91-72 blowout of Unicaja Malaga, their fifth successive win after three opening defeats, while eight-times winners Real Madrid cruised to a 77-61 home victory over Fenerbahce.

Barcelona stretched their perfect record to eight wins after a 78-48 away mauling of Besiktas Istanbul and playmaker Vassilis Spanoulis scored 16 points to help Olympiakos to a 77-63 triumph at Zalgiris.

LOS ANGELES | Fri Nov 30, 2012 2:15pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles judge on Thursday dismissed murder charges against a 70-year-old professional tennis official accused of killing her husband, granting a request of prosecutors who said they were unable to proceed with the case.

Los Angeles County prosecutors declined to discuss their reasons for seeking a dismissal of the case against Lois Goodman but prosecutors' spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said they had received new information about the case.

The case was dismissed without prejudice, meaning that charges could be re-filed against Goodman in the future.

"Because there is an ongoing police and district attorney's investigation, we will not make any further statements that might compromise that investigation," spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said in a written statement.

Goodman had been accused of killing her 80-year-old husband in April by beating him with a coffee mug. She was charged in August.

Defense lawyers have argued that Alan Frederick Goodman's death was an accident. They say that their client has passed a lie detector test and that her DNA was not found on the mug.

Goodman is well known in tennis circles and had worked at the annual U.S. Open Tennis Championships tournament for at least the past 10 years, mainly as a line judge, according to the U.S. Tennis Association.

Retired judge Otton to lead investigation into UCI

Fri Nov 30, 2012 10:36am EST

(Reuters) - Former Court of Appeal judge Philip Otton will chair the three-member commission set up to investigate allegations made against the International Cycling Union (UCI) over the Lance Armstrong doping scandal, the UCI said on Friday.

The retired judge, who has dealt with Formula One disputes at the International Court of Appeal, will work with Britain's 11-times Paralympic champion Tanni Grey-Thompson and Australian lawyer Malcolm Holmes.

The UCI said last month it would set up an independent commission to address issues and allegations which arose during the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) investigation into Armstrong and the U.S. Postal Team.

The commission, assembled by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport president John Coates, will be independent from any other sports body, the UCI said.

"The appointment of these three eminent figures demonstrates clearly that the UCI wants to get to the bottom of the Lance Armstrong affair and put cycling back on the right track," UCI president Pat McQuaid said in a statement.

"As I have said previously, the Commission's report and recommendations are critical to restoring confidence in the sport of cycling and in the UCI as its governing body," he added.

"We will co-operate fully with the Commission and provide them with whatever they need to conduct their enquiry and we urge all other interested stakeholders to do the same. We will listen to and act on the Commission's recommendations."

The commission is to hold a hearing in London in April and will submit its report to the UCI by June 1, 2013 or shortly afterwards.

In the coming two weeks, the UCI will also announce details of a stakeholder consultation to look at the future of cycling and discuss how to bring in lasting improvements, as well as to tackle other issues of concern, the governing body said.

Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life after USADA concluded the now-retired rider had been involved in the "most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen."

The USADA report said the 41-year-old American told his then team mates Floyd Landis and Tyler Hamilton he made a positive drugs test go away with a payment to the UCI in 2001.

The UCI acknowledged they received a $100,000 donation in 2002 but have denied the money was part of a covering up of a positive test.

Armstrong, who has always denied using performance-enhancing drugs, chose not to contest the USADA charges.

South Korean trailblazer Park Chan-ho retires

SEOUL | Fri Nov 30, 2012 3:11am EST

SEOUL (Reuters) - Former Major League Baseball All Star Park Chan-ho, who holds the record for the most wins by an Asian-born pitcher in the majors, announced his retirement on Friday and said it was time to give something back to the sport in South Korea.

The 39-year-old, who finished up his playing days with South Korea's Hanwha Eagles, won 124 MLB games in a career that included stints with the LA Dodgers, Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies.

The first South Korean to play in the majors, Park struggled to contain his emotions at a news conference in Seoul as he talked for more than an hour about his career, the 13 uniforms he wore over his 30 years in baseball displayed proudly in front of him.

"A kid from a tiny countryside Korean town ended up enjoying a long, illustrious career in Major League Baseball," said Park, who hails from the small town of Gongju, South Chungcheong province, about 130km south of the capital Seoul.

"I think I am the luckiest person ever in the history of Korean baseball."

Wearing a National League Championship ring and with his signature 'lucky' orange tie around his neck, Park said he decided to call time on his playing career after the 2012 season as he had achieved what he planned to do when he came home.

"After pitching at the Hanwha Eagles for the previous season, I now have specific ideas as to what I can contribute to advancing Korean baseball," said Park.

He added that he planned to go to the United States at the end of the year to improve his baseball administration and management skills.

"I also hope to have hands-on experience in America's commercialized baseball and strengthen the commercial aspect of Korean baseball."

Looking back on his career, he said baseball was like school to him.

"I learned many things I would otherwise never have learned through textbooks. It has also taught me how I can contribute to my country.

"Although I won't be pitching as a professional player any more I hope to be a bridge between baseball and the community, and I want young players to think how they can affect our society through baseball."

TOKYO | Fri Nov 30, 2012 2:04am EST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Aspiring sumo wrestler Mainoumi once convinced doctors to inject silicone into his scalp to meet height requirements for the ancient Japanese sport. Such sacrifice is a rarity now in a sport beset by scandals and with popularity at an all-time low.

With a history spanning centuries, sumo once graced the Imperial courts of Japan and wrestlers were held in the highest regard. Sponsors lavished gifts on the hulking giants and to join the ranks of the sumo was considered a worthy occupation.

Those days are long gone, however.

Tarnished by scandals involving drug use, bout-fixing, violence and alleged links to Japanese organized crime, sumo struggles to fill stadiums and attract new fans.

Such is its decline that last month only one person applied to take the sport's entrance exam.

This brought the total number of applicants for the year to just 56, the lowest since the current system of staging six major tournaments a year was introduced in 1958.

That compares to a peak of 223 in 1992 when muscle-bound Japanese brothers Takanohana and Wakanohana fired up the sport with their dynamic fighting styles.

"We should be wracking our brains to find solutions," said Shoji Kagamiyama, head of a sumo training gym.

"At this rate there will be more wrestlers quitting sumo than coming in. If that trend continues there will be none left. New wrestlers are our most precious commodity."

Last year sumo racked up debts of almost $50 million following a match-fixing sting and widespread arrests which led to a television black-out and a government ticking off.

The sport also drew outrage across Japan when a former gym boss was sentenced to six years in prison after a 17-year-old wrestler was beaten to death.

Last year, a gym chief was given a severe dressing down for beating three young wrestlers with a golf club for breaking curfew and not wearing traditional kimono outside.

"We don't know the reason why the numbers are dropping," a Japan Sumo Association (JSA) official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

"You would have to ask (applicants) why, or if the problems have had anything to do with their decision."

The situation is the latest manifestation of a long, slow decline. Public interest in the once-packed tournaments has been falling steadily over the past decade, with both crowds and television viewing figures down.

LOSING TO BASEBALL

Even without the scandals, sumo's popularity has been eaten away by 'cooler' sports. Sumo's Spartan lifestyle and warrior code appears lost on a modern Japan obsessed with glitz and celebrity.

While baseball continues to rule the roost, there is a growing challenge from soccer, whose 'cool factor' has rocketed since the 2002 World Cup co-hosted by Japan and South Korea, stealing still further fans.

Sumo also lacks home-grown heroes such as baseball's Ichiro Suzuki, who has broken Major League Baseball records for fun over the past 12 years, or soccer's Shinji Kagawa, who sealed a big-money transfer to Manchester United earlier this year.

"There's no question that sumo is at a turning point," said Eiji Takase, editor-in-chief of "Sumo" magazine.

"Compared to many professional sports the pay is relatively low and children think other athletes, like soccer players, are much cooler."

Newly promoted yokozuna (grand champion) Harumafuji, the third successive Mongolian to reach the elite rank, suggested that sumo may be too hardcore for today's pampered youth.

"Sumo is a strict sport," he told reporters. "Of course there are people who feel there is no need to put themselves through such hardship in an age of convenience."

In the late 1980s, wrestler Mainoumi talked doctors into injecting silicone into his head after he failed to make the height requirement of 1.73 meters.

He made his professional debut in 1990 and went on to become wildly popular for his incredible upset wins over wrestlers often twice his size.

"Being a wrestler is no longer an attractive job," sumo journalist Taro Arai said. "There used to be many patrons who sponsored gyms.

"They used to buy wrestlers watches, expensive meals, kimonos or give them money.

"Those kinds of sponsors no longer exist. That has made the life of a wrestler less attractive. Practice is hard and painful and it takes a long time to get promoted and paid."

LOCAL HEROES

The JSA has loosened its height and weight requirements in a bid to lure more applicants, but it could be too little, too late unless they can unearth some local role models.

Some observers feel that many of the problems relating to sumo's image can be traced back to Asashoryu's rise to top dog in 2003.

The Mongolian firebrand's brawls with rivals in bathhouses were out of place with the sport's warrior code, and he tested the JSA's patience further when he was caught playing soccer in a Wayne Rooney shirt after handing in a sick note for a back injury.

Asashoryu's fist-pumping, scowling and growling in the ring were also deemed a serious breach of protocol.

But criticism of Asashoryu ignored the fact he kept sumo afloat almost single-handedly in terms of publicity and ticket sales.

"It's hard to imagine Japanese kids jumping into sumo following foreign wrestlers," said Arai, alluding to the fact that there hasn't been a native Japanese yokozuna since 2003.

"Sumo needs a Japanese star."

Takase agrees that this would help, but also advocates taking pride in the cultural rituals unique to the sport and even returning to basics.

"For example, wrestlers don't need to be so heavy - thinner is better. This makes for faster wrestlers and more interesting bouts, like with Mainoumi," he said.

"If they abandon the rituals and just fight and go home, all it becomes is a fight. It's because it has this spirit that it's sumo - it needs to go back to that."

Warriors take down Nuggets in wild finish
Nov 30th 2012, 07:26

Fri Nov 30, 2012 2:26am EST

(Reuters) - The Golden State Warriors had to survive a video review after the final buzzer on Thursday but prevailed 106-105 in a thriller against the Denver Nuggets in Oakland.

Denver forward Andre Iguodala's three-point shot at the end hit nothing but net, but upon review the ball failed to leave his hand before the buzzer and the basket was waved off, leaving the Warriors with the win.

The Warriors improved to 9-6 on the year, moving back into a tie for the Pacific division lead, thanks mainly to David Lee's game high 31 points and nine rebounds.

Klay Thompson added 21 points and Stephen Curry 20 in a see-sawing contest where the Warriors led by as many as 12 but also trailed by 16 at one point.

"It was an unbelievable victory and everyone played their part," Lee told reporters.

"We had an up and down game, it usually is between these two teams, we were double overtime last time in this building and now we have a similar game tonight so I'm just happy we came through.

"Our team top to bottom has had a will to win all season. We've had injuries, we've had distractions, but at the end of the day we came out and wanted to get victory more than the other team."

Igoudala had three free throws with three seconds left and made the first two before failing on the third but the Nuggets made the rebound.

A first attempt to gain victory failed and the ball ricocheted out of bounds, but a video review saw Denver controversially retain possession.

The final inbounds pass went to Igoudala and he flushed the long shot only to have it chalked off, dropping Denver to 8-8.
