BRISBANE | Mon Dec 31, 2012 12:17pm EST

BRISBANE (Reuters) - Maria Sharapova said 2012 had been the most memorable year of her career after her victory at the French Open and carrying Russia's flag at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

"A lot of things came together," she said in Brisbane on Monday. "It was the grand slam that was going to take a little bit longer than the others for me.

"I knew that physically I needed a few extra years to get stronger to move more efficiently on that surface," she said of her win on the French clay.

"The Olympic experience was one that I'll never forget because it was my first time being an Olympian. I was the first Russian female athlete to carry the flag for my country, so it was very emotional. It was such an incredible experience."

Sharapova, competing in this week's Brisbane International tournament, said there was more depth in women's tennis than at any stage of her 12-year career.

"It's much more physical than it has been," she said.

"Maybe five years ago you go into a tournament and you would treat the first couple of rounds as, you know, not as a warm-up, but you don't have to go into the first round thinking, okay, this is where I really have to play my best tennis.

"Now it's certainly much different because you can be facing an opponent that's had good results, beaten top players, hasn't been consistent enough but is a really tough, tough player.

"The inconsistency obviously shows that their ranking is not high enough, therefore you're facing them in the first few rounds.

"It is a much stronger sport. And also with technology and racquets and improvements of all the things we have. There are so many things in tennis that in other sports you don't consider: the balls, the racquets, the strings. That changes yearly."

Asked whether she agreed with Serena Williams that a grand slam was possible for one of the top three women players this year, Sharapova described the mission as virtually impossible.

"Well, she has the last two," Sharapova said. "Has she achieved this before? I don't know. She had an incredible season."

Told that Williams had completed the "Serena slam" by winning four straight majors through 2002 and 2003, Sharapova chuckled and replied: "I see. Anything is possible but that's certainly tough. How tough? Well, I've never done it so I can't tell you."

The other member of the big three, world number one Victoria Azarenka who will defend her Australian Open title in Melbourne, said the current era was the toughest in the history of the women's game.

"I truly believe women's tennis is the highest competition right now," she said. "We have a lot of girls who any given day can win a title and beat each other.

"That's very exciting for the public to see and it's exciting for us, the players.

"It gives an extra motivation to know that I have to work hard because if I don't, there is somebody that's going to take my spot. For me personally, I have a lot of excitement for women's competition because I know that I always have to be there."

Mon Dec 31, 2012 11:16am EST

(Reuters) - Pat Shurmur became the first coaching casualty on what has become known around the National Football League as Black Monday when he was sacked by the Cleveland Browns just hours after the regular season had concluded.

The 5-11 Browns, who closed out the season on Sunday with a 24-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, were among the first teams to begin house cleaning by announcing Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert had both been relieved of their duties.

"We felt that these moves were in the best interests of the Cleveland Browns and our future," said Browns owner Jimmy Haslam in a statement on the team's website.

"I enjoyed getting to know Tom and Pat over the past several months, and want to thank them, not just for their contributions to the Browns, but also the insight they were able to provide.

"They are both fine men and hope they have the best of success as they move forward with their careers."

Black Monday began with the Jacksonville Jaguars announcing they had fired general manager Gene Smith and was quickly followed by the New York Jets dumping GM Mike Tannenbaum.

The Jets, however, ended the speculation swirling around Rex Ryan by confirming the under-fire head coach would be back next season.

"Rex Ryan will remain the head coach of our football team. I believe that he has the passion, the talent, and the drive to successfully lead our team," said Jets owner Woody Johnson on the team's website.

After a tumultuous 6-10 season, overshadowed by a quarterbacking controversy around the use of incumbent Mark Sanchez and polarizing Tim Tebow, Ryan was widely expected to pay for the Jets under-achieving results with his job.

With Ryan back for next season the speculation will now center on the futures of Sanchez and Tebow in New York.

The Jets sputtering offense ranked 30th among 32 teams, generating an average of just 299 yards per game.

Changes had been expected in Jacksonville after the toothless Jaguars finished the season tied with Kansas City Chiefs for the NFL's worst record (2-14).

"Now it is time for the Jacksonville Jaguars to begin a new chapter," Khan said in a statement. "We're not looking back.

"I've made it clear from Day One that we pledge nothing less than to deliver the first Super Bowl championship to Jacksonville.

BRISBANE | Mon Dec 31, 2012 11:17am EST

BRISBANE (Reuters) - Former U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur conceded there was no magic solution to her problems on home courts after a shock loss to Sofia Arvidsson in the opening round of the Brisbane International on Monday.

The world number nine, who has failed to match expectations in Australian tournaments, lost 7-6 7-5 to the Swede five weeks after ankle surgery and only a fortnight before the Australian Open.

"Just really disappointed again, leaving Brisbane so early," Stosur told reporters. "I think it was some good tennis and some pretty average tennis at times."

Stosur said the surgery and the subsequent shortage of training had not played a part in her defeat.

"I wasn't going into the match thinking 'Oh my God, I haven't done this or that'," she said.

"I gave myself every opportunity to try and play as well as I could but for sure, I have not practiced enough.

"I guess going into the match you want to think that that's going to be enough, but I think tonight it probably showed that it certainly wasn't enough.

"I have a fair bit of work to do ahead of me. You could put it down to being a bit rusty and it's the first match."

Saturation media coverage and public expectation is again accompanying Stosur's attempt to add the Australian Open to the U.S. Open title she secured by upsetting Serena Williams in 2011.

"I don't know how much of that really played into it," she said. "I've said it before, it's great playing out on a court where you've got the crowd behind you and trying to cheer you on and all that."

Stosur's last tournament before the Australian Open starts in Sydney on Sunday.

"I know that panicking doesn't help anyone get a good result or feel better," she said. "There is no magic dust that's going to make anything go away or fix it overnight or anything. I'm not the first player to have their home grand slam and not perform.

""There has been a few Australian and French players, you name it. It's a tough thing.

"Again, would I rather have a grand slam in my country than not? I would.

"All you can do is try and play your best. I know that people believe in me and what I'm trying to do are the right things. You just really want to perform right here, right now. That's what I'm going to keep trying to do."

Final-game loss sinks Cowboys' playoff pursuit
Dec 31st 2012, 07:10

By Ros Krasny

LANDOVER, Maryland | Mon Dec 31, 2012 2:10am EST

LANDOVER, Maryland (Reuters) - A heartbreaking loss ended another Dallas Cowboys' season on Sunday, the third year in a row the storied franchise has missed the playoffs.

"We have a big challenge ahead of us," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after Dallas lost to the Washington Redskins 28-18 and squandered their chance to win the NFC East.

"One of my jobs is to basically evaluate, analyze and make decisions in the off season, and help us be in better shape going into playoffs."

The Cowboys' 2012 campaign finished with two consecutive losses after a crucial interception thrown by quarterback Tony Romo after Dallas had rallied in the fourth quarter.

"It just hurts a lot right now to even think about and talk about," Romo said. For a second straight year the Cowboys lost a last-ditch, win-or-go-home final game of the regular season.

The Cowboys shook off two early interceptions and gained a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter, helped by a missed 37-yard field goal attempt by Washington's Kai Forbath.

But Dallas, a team that has been estimated as the most valuable sports franchise in the United States, was unable to win as the Redskins successfully kept Romo off-balance.

"We knew Romo doesn't like pressure in his face, so that was our big thing. We had to get pressure up the middle and not so much outside, to be able to keep him in the pocket," Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said of the plan to neutralize Romo.

Romo completed 20 of 37 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns but was picked off three times.

"Tony's a heck of a football player and you have to keep him off balance. We feel very fortunate to have kept him a little off balance, it made the difference between winning and losing," said Washington coach Mike Shanahan.

The Redskins seemed to be cruising early in the fourth quarter.

But a Romo touchdown pass to wide receiver Kevin Ogletree with about six minutes to go and a two-point conversion pulled the visitors within three points, and the Cowboys seemed primed for their quarterback to mount one of his trademark late drives.

But a Romo pass intended for running back DeMarco Murray was scooped up by linebacker Rob Jackson, setting up the Redskins' final touchdown drive.

"I thought the safe throw was to throw it to DeMarco under the swing, right to the sideline, and the guy (Jackson) made a play, peeling off as a defensive end," Romo said. "I wish I had made a better decision at that time. It was disappointing."

He added, "You put your heart into this thing for so long throughout the year. We had to overcome a lot of stuff just to get ourselves in this situation. We had a chance. I'm just disappointed that we couldn't get the job done."

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett offered no magic formula to turn around his team.

"Our effort and determination for this game was awfully good and indicative of what this team has been doing all year long," Garrett said. "At the end of the day, we did not get the job done."

The Redskins, who last won a divisional title when standout rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III was nine years old, will play the Seattle Seahawks next weekend.

The Cowboys return to Dallas to consider what could have been.

Redskins beat the Cowboys to claim the NFC East

By Steve Ginsburg

LANDOVER, Maryland | Mon Dec 31, 2012 12:26am EST

LANDOVER, Maryland (Reuters) - The Washington Redskins defeated the Dallas Cowboys 28-18 on Sunday to claim the NFC East crown for the first time since 1999 and deny their bitter rivals a spot in the postseason.

Rookie running back Alfred Morris rushed for 200 yards on 33 carries and three touchdowns, while quarterback Robert Griffin III added a 10-yard TD run to lead the Redskins.

Washington (10-6), winners of seven straight, will host the Seattle Seahawks (11-5) in the first round of the playoffs next Sunday at FedExField.

The Cowboys (8-8), who would have won the NFC East and the final playoff berth by beating Washington, closed the season with two consecutive losses and missed the playoffs for the third straight year.

Griffin, the Redskins' Pro Bowl-bound rookie, completed only nine of 18 passes for 100 yards but Washington enjoyed a 274-100 advantage in the ground game.

Morris gave the Redskins a 21-10 fourth-quarter lead with a 32-yard touchdown run, reversing field against the Cowboys' pursuit. The score, with 10:32 left in the game, put the crowd in a party atmosphere not seen at FedExField in a long time.

The revelry was short-lived, however, when the Cowboys cut the lead to 21-18 on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Kevin Ogletree and a successful two-point conversion toss from Romo to Dwayne Harris.

With three minutes left and Dallas ready to mount a final drive, linebacker Rob Jackson intercepted a Romo pass in the flat intended for DeMarco Murray to seal the Redskins' triumph.

A roughing-the-passer penalty by Jason Hatcher after an unsuccessful third-and-six pass by Griffin gave the Redskins a first and goal at the six.

Morris scored his third touchdown of the night, a one-yard dive, with 1:09 left to put an exclamation point on the Washington victory.

Romo completed 20 of 37 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns but the 10-year NFL veteran had three interceptions.

Sun Dec 30, 2012 9:05pm EST

(Reuters) - Blair Walsh booted a 29-yard field goal as time expired to earn the Minnesota Vikings a heart-stopping 37-34 home win over the Green Bay Packers and a playoff berth on a pulsating final Sunday of the National Football League regular season.

The Vikings' victory denied the Packers the second seed in the NFC and a first round bye leaving the stage to East division rivals the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, who will clash later on Sunday in the last game on the schedule that will decide the final piece of the playoff puzzle with the winner advancing.

For sheer drama, the Vikings and Packers left the Cowboys and Redskins a tough act to follow as they engaged in a furious seesaw battle that was not decided until Walsh, the Vikings' rookie kicker drove his kick through the uprights sending the Mall of America Stadium crowd home for a happy New Year.

The North division rivals will not have to wait long to renew hostilities with the Vikings making the trip to Lambeau Field next weekend to face the Packers in an NFC wildcard matchup. The other wildcard contest will see the Seattle Seahawks take on the winner of the game between the Cowboys and Redskins.

The AFC matchups will see the surprising Indianapolis Colts visiting the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Houston Texans.

While Walsh clinched the victory it was Adrian Peterson, who did most of the heavy lifting. The Vikings' dynamic running back rushed for 199 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries, including a punishing 26-yard romp to set up the winning field goal.

If there was one disappointment for the capacity crowd it was watching Peterson fall just nine yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record.

Peterson, coming back from a career-threatening knee injury, terrorized opposing defenses this season rushing for 2,097 yards, the second most ever behind Dickerson who rumbled for 2,105 in 1984.

"Ultimately we got the W (win) and that was our main focus coming into the game," Peterson told reporters as a wild celebration erupted around him. "I said coming into the game, if it (the record) happens, it will happen but don't focus on it.

"It will be good to play another week."

BRONCOS GET BYE

In Denver, Peyton Manning tossed three touchdown passes as the Broncos secured top seed in the AFC and a first round bye by extending their winning streak to 11 games with a 38-3 demolition of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The New England Patriots will also have next weekend off after shutting out the Miami Dolphins 28-0 to take the AFC's number two seed while the Texans watched their road to the Super Bowl get a little bumpier.

The Texans began the day as the top placed team in the AFC but watched it all slip away with 28-16 loss to the inspired Colts, who had head coach Chuck Pagano back on the sidelines for the first time in three months after undergoing cancer treatment.

A day of drama began in New York with the defending Super Bowl champion Giants battling to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Needing a win over the Philadelphia Eagles and plenty of help from other teams the Giants came out firing on all cylinders at a bitterly cold MetLife Stadium, charging to a 35-7 halftime lead then coasting to 42-7 victory.

A sputtering New York offense that scored a total of 14 points the previous two games, scored three times in the opening quarter, Eli Manning finding Rueben Randle with a pair of touchdown strikes and David Wilson for another.

Manning tossed two more in the second half, giving the Super Bowl most valuable player five touchdown passes in a game for the first time in his career.

It wasn't nearly enough, though, with the Giants needing the Chicago Bears, Vikings and Cowboys all to lose to extend their season.

The suspense ended early as Chicago held on to tame the Lions 26-24 with the help of four field goals from Olindo Mare.

Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who set a single season receiving record last week, came up just short in his bid to become the first to reach the 2,000-yard plateau, grabbing five passes for 72 yards to finish the season with 1,964 yards.

The NFC West division title was also decided on the final day, San Francisco 49ers grabbing the crown with a 27-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

The Seahawks closed out the campaign with a fifth straight win beating the St. Louis Rams 20-13 to take second.

Sun Dec 30, 2012 5:16pm EST

(Reuters) - National Hockey League (NHL) and the players union are expected to be back at the bargaining table by Monday in a bid to end their bitter labor dispute, league deputy commissioner Bill Daly said on Sunday.

The two sides held what were described as informational meetings earlier on Sunday as they worked to reach a new collective bargaining agreement that would salvage a limited season.

"Hopeful that we return for a bargaining meeting either tonight or tomorrow morning," Daly said in an email to Reuters.

NHL Players' Association spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon later said there would be no more face-to-face meetings on Sunday.

"The plan is for the sides to meet tomorrow (Monday)," he said via email.

There have been no negotiations since December 13.

The two sides spent the weekend discussing a new proposal by the NHL that reportedly is contingent on a regular season of at least 48 games starting no later than January 19.

The league's offer, made on Thursday, is said to include changes in NHL proposals on term limits for players contracts, salary variance and buyouts.

The offer would extend the limit of player contracts to six years from the NHL's previous offer of five, adjust yearly salary variance to 10 per cent from five per cent and permit one buyout for each team before the 2013-14 season that would not count against the team's salary cap.

Players have been locked out since mid-September and the league has cancelled games through January 14, more than 50 percent of the regular season which was scheduled to start in October.

At stake is how to divide $3.3 billion in annual revenue.

With the talks stalled, the players have given their union's executive board the authority to file a disclaimer of interest, which would essentially dissolve the union and allow individual players to file anti-trust lawsuits against the league. The board has until Wednesday to make a decision.

The dispute is the NHL's fourth work stoppage in 20 years and first since a lockout forced cancellation of the entire 2004-05 season.

BRISBANE | Sun Dec 30, 2012 7:30am EST

BRISBANE (Reuters) - An angry and impatient Serena Williams overcame blustery conditions at the Brisbane International on Sunday in an ominous beginning to her only tournament before her charge at a 16th major title at the Australian Open next month.

The American threw her hands in the air, shook her head, gesticulated towards her coach and stomped her feet in petulant protest - but that did little to help compatriot Varvara Lepchenko who suffered a 6-2 6-1 first round defeat.

Howling with frustration in her first match since winning the WTA Championships at Istanbul in October, lacking rhythm in swirling winds on Pat Rafter Arena, Williams still delivered enough booming serves and punishing groundstrokes to prevail in a formidable if cantankerous display.

The reigning Wimbledon, Olympic and U.S. Open champion told reporters a calendar-year grand slam was very much on her mind at the start of the season.

Williams held all four major titles in the so-called Serena Slam of 2002-2003 but the holy grail of professional tennis is to win the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open tournaments in the same calendar year.

The American claimed world number one Victoria Azarenka and number two Maria Sharapova, and perhaps a few fringe-dwellers, were eyeing off a near-impossible feat not achieved since Steffi Graf's unbeaten run through 1988.

"I think whoever wins the Australian Open will have that same thought," Williams said.

"I think there is no way that Victoria or Maria or maybe some other players don't have that same thought. I think I definitely feel that way."

Both Azarenka and Sharapova are in a red-hot Brisbane field with Williams. Of the world's top 10, only Agnieszka Radwanska and Li Na are missing.

The predictability of her defeat of Lepchenko was matched by the level of emotion surrounding Australian wildcard Jarmila Gajdosova's victory on the opening day.

HIGH EMOTION

Playing her first tournament since the passing in September of her mother, also named Jarmila, and with her world ranking having plummeted from a career high of 25 to 183 in the last 18 months, Gajdosova roared home from a one-set deficit to stun Italy's world number 16 Roberta Vinci.

Gajdosova wept after a 4-6 6-1 6-3 triumph that set up a second-round showdown against French Open champion Sharapova.

"There have been a lot of things happening in my life," Gajdosova said.

"As you all know, my mom passed away in September. It's been a difficult time. First Christmas, as well, without her. My dad is here. My brother and his wife and son. It was my first match in front of them and my first match in Australia, after a long time, without my mum."

Sixth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova recovered from a pre-tournament asthma scare to defeat Spain's Carla Suarez-Navarro 6-3 6-4.

Kvitova has been gasping and wheezing in Brisbane's humid weather and revealed one of her recent attacks had been her worst in three years.

The 2011 Wimbledon champion was unaware she was asthmatic until she nearly collapsed during an event in New York in 2009.

"I was playing a tournament in the Bronx and after about five minutes I had to sit down and relax and have a drink because I just couldn't move and I couldn't play," she wrote in a column for the Courier-Mail newspaper.

"I still feel really uncomfortable when I'm in this sort of hot and humid weather and it was at practise on Friday that I started to feel a bit similar to what I did in The Bronx."
