Points holds nerve to win Houston Open and Masters invite
Apr 1st 2013, 00:54

Sun Mar 31, 2013 8:54pm EDT

(Reuters) - American D.A. Points held his nerve through a late weather delay to claim a one shot victory at the Houston Open on Sunday and earn a ticket to the Masters.

Clinging to a one shot advantage on clubhouse leader Henrik Stenson of Sweden with four holes to play, Points had his momentum interrupted when a storm swept across the Redstone Golf Club, forcing an evacuation of the course.

When play resumed after a nearly three hour delay, Points picked up where he left off carding four consecutive pars to return a bogey-free six-under 66 for a winning total of 16-under 272, one shot clear of Stenson (66) and compatriot Billy Horschel (66).

Dustin Johnson (65) and Ben Crane (68) finished two shots back on 14-under 274.

It was the second career PGA Tour win for Points, whose best previous finish this season was a tie for 63rd after failing to make the cut in seven of nine starts.

WEST POINT, New York | Sat Mar 30, 2013 9:12pm EDT

WEST POINT, New York (Reuters) - Sapped of firepower due to a spate of injuries, the New York Yankees found inspiration in a visit to the U.S. Military Academy on Saturday for their last practice game before Opening Day.

Before taking on the Army team on Doubleday Field, named after West Point graduate and Army General Abner Doubleday, the Yankees were given a tour of the impressive campus on the banks of the Hudson.

They saw the Battle Monument to the U.S. Civil War and Trophy Point, a majestic overlook of the river decorated with cannons and guns seized by U.S. troops in campaigns dating back to the Revolutionary War.

"Our adversity is miniscule to when they go through adversity, because their adversity can be much more costly than what ours is, obviously," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before New York's 10-5 win over the Army team. "The stakes are much higher.

"Coming here keeps life in perspective."

Yankees players and coaches were taken into Washington Hall, a wondrous mess hall of five-story high beamed ceilings with arched lead glass windows, sharing tables with the cadets for chat sessions before taking the field.

Many of the cadets were in awe of the major league players, and the Yankees were also impressed by what they experienced less than 50 miles north of their Bronx home.

"It's good to be able to sit down and meet some of these kids," said Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte. "It's just cool to see the discipline they're teaching these kids and that they carry.

"These kids know exactly what they want to do."

Mariano Rivera, Major League Baseball's all-time saves leader who has announced this will be his last season, was stopped on his way into the dining hall by a cadet.

"I just told him he has represented Panama really well," said Mario Cortizo, a fellow-Panamanian who gave Rivera a decorative mug native to their country. "We all love him."

Rivera said Cortizo, a senior, invited him to his graduation. "I was proud of him. Knowing that he comes from Panama," said the closer. "This is an amazing, beautiful place. First class."

STRING OF INJURIES

Oddsmakers have lowered their expectations for the 2013 Yankees, who have Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter among those missing the season opener on Monday against the visiting Boston Red Sox due to injury.

The Yankees themselves still have their sights on a championship, though they may have to rely more on their arms, with a pitching staff that could potentially carry them.

"I'm motivated coming into this season to win a championship and that starts with winning the division," said hard-throwing left-hander CC Sabathia.

Pettitte said he had not paid attention to coverage of the team but recently realized "there was a whole lot of people doubting we were going to win any ball games this year.

"I think we're going to win our division. I expect us to be in the World Series, bottom line. We've got the pitching, we've got the bullpen to do that."

Pettitte echoed the can-do spirit of West Point cadets, who face five years of active military service following graduation.

"I feel like if people think we're going to be a little short on scoring runs, we're gonna figure out a way to score runs, enough runs to win. I feel great about our club."

Girardi shrugged off the string of injuries, maintaining a long view of the six-month season.

"Every year you're going to go through things," said the manager. "Sometimes you're going to do it in the middle of the year, sometimes you're going to do it at the end of the year. We have to be doing it in the beginning right now.

"I expect their best. We expect to win every day and we prepare to win every day."

Fri Mar 29, 2013 8:58pm EDT

(Reuters) - Unheralded American Steve Wheatcroft carded another five-under-par 67 to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Houston Open on Friday, while major winners Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson fought hard to just make the cut at Redstone Golf Club.

The 35-year-old Wheatcroft only earned a start for the event through Monday qualifying but now sits at 10-under, holding the 36 hole lead over fellow Americans Jason Kokrak (69) and D.A. Points (71) who are tied second at nine-under.

England's Brian Davis (70) and former British Open winner Stewart Cink (66) are joint fourth at seven-under.

World number two McIlroy will get the chance to continue to hone his wayward game before the U.S. Masters after he ground out a two-under-par round of 70 to make the cut on the number at one-under.

McIlroy, a week from being deposed by Tiger Woods from golf's rankings summit, managed three birdies and just the lone bogey in a more accomplished effort than his opening round of 73.

"It was okay. It was definitely more consistent today than yesterday," McIlroy told reporters.

"I gave myself quite a few chances. It could have been a couple better, but, you know, it was an improvement on yesterday."

The Northern Irishman's season has been less than stellar, with the twice major winner adding next week's Texas Open in San Antonio to his schedule as he seeks form ahead of the year's first major at Augusta National which starts on April 11.

Since signing a new equipment deal with Nike in the offseason, he has missed the cut in Abu Dhabi, lost in the first round of the WGC Match Play Championship and walked off mid-round at the Honda Classic when headed for another missed cut.

Mickelson needed three back nine birdies to also make the cut on the number.

Wheatcroft, who has been a PGA Tour member three previous times but currently has just conditional status on the secondary Web.com Tour, was excited to be in unfamiliar territory.

"Bogey-free so far, excited with where I'm at obviously," Wheatcroft told reporters.

"I just have to approach the weekend the same as I have through the first 36.

"I don't have to worry about the money list out here. I don't have to worry about my status out here.

"If I win, it's great. It's kind of a win or nothing. I just get to go play golf this week. Everybody else can worry their status on the PGA Tour.

"Hopefully I can make enough money to get either temporary status out here or if I win, that's obviously the goal."

Nocioni lifts Caja as Panathinaikos advance
Mar 29th 2013, 23:21

By Zoran Milosavljevic

BELGRADE | Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:21pm EDT

BELGRADE (Reuters) - Former Chicago Bulls forward Andres Nocioni produced a vintage performance to keep Caja Laboral Vitoria in the hunt for a berth in the Euroleague playoffs after a rollercoaster 86-82 win at Khimki Moscow on Friday.

The competition's six-time winners Panathinaikos Athens reached the last eight with a match to spare in the second group stage after an 82-60 rout of Germany's Bamberg and holders Olympiakos Piraeus, their bitter cross-town rivals, stayed on course with a 78-73 success at Fenerbahce.

Quadruple former champions Maccabi Tel Aviv also edged closer to the quarter-finals with a 101-58 home rout of hapless Besiktas Istanbul while last season's runners-up CSKA Moscow beat Real Madrid 81-72 in a battle of the top contenders.

The 33-year old Nocioni, who has had a topsy-turvy season in Europe's premier club competition, rolled back the years by scoring 24 points, including four crucial three-pointers, to keep Caja in the hunt for one of the three remaining berths in their eight-team top pool.

Khimki, who are also involved in a fierce five-team dogfight to join group winners Barcelona in the quarter-finals, had fought back from a 10-point deficit in the final quarter before Nocioni stepped up to the plate and buried a long-range effort to swing the tie Caja's way.

"It's a big victory for us and it gives us an opportunity to advance to the knockout stage if we win our last home game (against Montepaschi Siena)," Caja coach Zan Tabak told the competition's official website (www.euroleague.net).

Centre Maciej Lampe, who poured 21 points for the winners, added: "It was great to be in this wonderful arena, I spent three years here and have fantastic memories but the most important thing is that we came away with a lifeline win."

Panathinaikos joined the already qualified trio of CSKA, Real Madrid and Anadolu Efes Istanbul from the other pool after Lithuania shooting guard Jonas Maciulis netted a game-high 24 points in just 23 minutes on the court, hitting six of seven three-pointers.

Centre Stephane Lasme and forward James Gist added 11 apiece for Panathinaikos, who will be looking for a win at home against CSKA in their final group match that could lift them into the top two and ensure home court advantage in the best-of-five quarter-final playoff series.

Four teams from each pool advance to the quarter-finals, whose winners will progress to the May 10-12 Final Four in London.

IMPRESSIVE COMEBACK

Maccabi looked out for the count halfway through the second group stage with two wins and five defeats but came storming back and hauled themselves into the hunt with a sixth successive victory after an impressive display against Besiktas in their Nokia Arena.

Americans Devin Smith and Ricky Hickman netted 16 points each and their compatriot Nik Caner-Medley chipped in with 15 to boost Maccabi's confidence ahead of a crucial visit to 2010 champions Barcelona in the last round.

"I am really pleased with the club and the players who knew how to turn a very difficult situation into a wonderful one," said Maccabi coach David Blatt, who won the 2007 European Championship with Russia.

"After we beat Besiktas last time their coach said that they played poorly and that we weren't a strong team. Perhaps we are not as strong as in past years but we are still strong enough to rout them and I never thought it would be this easy," he added.

CSKA also appeared to be in trouble at one stage in the top 16 but five wins on the trot, capped by an effervescent performance against eight-time winners Real, elevated them into the driving seat of their section.

Former Toronto Raptors guard Sonny Weems led the charge with 21 points and four assists, playmaker Milos Teodosic added 17 points and seven assists and fellow Serbian centre Nenad Krstic amassed 16 points.

"We played good defense against a team of great shooters and it's a very important victory for us because it's always been our goal to finish top of the group," said Weems.

Teodosic added: "It's easy to collect seven assists when you have team mates like I have, it's all because of them. We never stopped believing in ourselves and are now very close to winning the group."

Real looked certain to clinch that group when they romped to a 9-1 record but three successive defeats have made that objective unlikely ahead of their final game at home to Efes.

The Turkish side also did themselves no favors in the battle for top spot with a 70-64 home defeat by Spaniards Unicaja Malaga but the victory turned out to be meaningless for the visitors, who were eliminated from the playoffs after Panathinaikos won their match.

McNamara suffers paralysis from Cheltenham fall
Mar 29th 2013, 20:56

Fri Mar 29, 2013 4:56pm EDT

(Reuters) - Amateur Irish jockey JT McNamara has suffered paralysis as a result of his fall at the Cheltenham Festival earlier this month.

"JT McNamara remains in the Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. Whilst he suffered a serious neck injury resulting in paralysis, he has made progress in the last week and is in a very positive frame of mind," said a statement issued jointly by Dr Adrian McGoldrick, senior medical officer for the Irish Turf Club, and Lisa Hancock, CEO of the Injured Jockey's Fund, on Friday.

"He is greatly appreciative of the many messages, cards and letters received and also wishes to thank the Frenchay Hospital who are looking after him so well."

McNamara fractured two vertebrae when his mount, Galaxy Rock, fell at the first fence in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup on March 14.

A previous statement earlier this week said the 37-year-old, who has had neck surgery, was fully alert but needed full-time ventilation at present.

Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:35pm EDT

(Reuters) - Rider Stefan Schumacher's admission that he had used banned substances was welcomed by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and national cycling federation (BDR) on Friday.

Schumacher, who failed two drug tests in 2008, said in an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel that doping was part of his training just like eating a "plate of pasta".

"The admission ... comes too late. He could have spared himself and his sport some things if he had told the truth earlier," DOSB general director Michael Vesper and BDR chief Rudolf Scharping said in a joint statement.

"But his admission comes early enough to draw consequences for the fight against doping. This is why we welcome that Schumacher is ready to process the past. We expect that through his statements the people behind it will be caught and punished."

Schumacher tested positive for the blood-boosting drug EPO-CERA at the 2008 Tour de France and the Beijing Olympic Games but had always previously denied cheating. He was given a two-year ban which was later reduced.

"I have taken EPO, growth hormone and corticosteroids," the 31-year-old, who has ridden with the Christina Watches team since 2012, told Der Spiegel.

"Doping was like the plates of pasta after training," added Schumacher as he explained that he started to cheat in his early 20s.

"I went along with the system. It does not make me proud but it's the way it was."

Schumacher is one of several riders to have admitted doping since disgraced American Lance Armstrong was last year banned for life and later confessed to cheating his way to seven Tour de France victories from 1999-2005.

The German rode with the Gerolsteiner team from 2006. He won the Amstel Gold one-day classic a year later and two stages of the 2008 Tour de France.

Two of Schumacher's team mates, Italian Davide Rebellin and Austrian Bernhard Kohl, also failed tests for EPO-CERA in 2008.

LONDON | Fri Mar 29, 2013 8:49am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Rio Ferdinand is shocked by the allegation England fans sang racist songs about him and his brother Anton during the 8-0 World Cup qualifying victory in San Marino, the Manchester United defender said on Friday.

Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) have contacted world soccer's ruling body FIFA about the complaints and the Football Association is awaiting official notification of the incident which could lead to England being forced to play behind closed doors.

Rio and Anton, who is on loan from Queens Park Rangers to Turkish club Bursaspor, were allegedly targeted by England supporters in the game in San Marino last Friday.

"You expect and accept banter from fans on the terraces as it's part of what makes the game great but racism is not banter...and from your own fans? WOW," the 34-year-old Rio said on his Twitter account.

"Always a small minority who ruin it for others. Let's not jump to conclusions and assume though as it might just have been banter. We'll see after the investigation."

Ferdinand, who won the last of his 81 caps in June 2011, angered some England fans when he withdrew after being recalled to Roy Hodgson's squad for the match in San Marino and Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Montenegro that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Hodgson said he did not speak to Ferdinand before naming him in his squad and the defender eventually pulled out, citing a special fitness routine he needs to adopt to help control a long-standing back problem.

After his international withdrawal the experienced player flew to Qatar to work as a TV pundit for the San Marino game.

FERGUSON REACTION

United manager Alex Ferguson said on Friday that he told Ferdinand to go to London to meet Hodgson face-to-face and explain his decision.

Ferguson added he had no problem with the player's trip to Qatar.

"He trained last week then had Friday, Saturday and Sunday off and he could make his own choice about things," Ferguson told a news conference ahead of runaway leaders United's Premier League match at Sunderland on Saturday.

Asked about the alleged racist songs, Ferguson said: "I think that's modern society I am afraid. We see a bit of that from supporters and the way they react to things".

FIFA is obliged to investigate FARE's complaints and if they decide the songs were racist England could be heavily penalized.

Bulgaria and Hungary were forced to play behind closed doors in the last week following earlier cases of racist and anti-Semitic chants at World Cup matches.

It is not unheard of for supporters to turn on their own players and racially abuse them.

Southampton's Poland international goalkeeper Artur Boruc threw a water bottle into a crowd of his own fans this season when they began racially abusing him and said his action cost him a place in the starting lineup for several weeks.

Former coach charged with match-fixing in South Korea

Fri Mar 29, 2013 2:23am EDT

(Reuters) - A leading South Korean basketball coach, arrested earlier this month for allegedly rigging matches, was among four people formally charged by prosecutors on Friday, local media reported.

Dongbu Promy head coach Kang Dong-hee, who resigned after his arrest, was indicted for accepting money from brokers to help fix four matches during the 2010-2011 Korean Basketball League (KBL) season, according to the Yonhap news agency.

Three others, including two gambling brokers, were also charged for match-fixing.

Basketball is the latest sport in South Korea to be hit hard by match-fixing in recent years with incidents in soccer, volleyball and baseball forcing the government to take a hard-line stance on the issue.
