DUBLIN, Ohio | Fri May 31, 2013 8:19pm EDT

DUBLIN, Ohio (Reuters) - Rejuvenated by the recent birth of his first child, American Bill Haas rebounded from successive missed cuts on the PGA Tour to grab a three-shot lead in Friday's weather-hit second round at the Memorial Tournament.

While five-times champion and last year's winner Tiger Woods battled to a two-over-par 74 in gusting winds at Muirfield Village Golf Club to sit 10 strokes off the pace, Haas putted superbly on lightning-fast greens to fire a five-under-par 67.

Though Haas bogeyed his final hole, the par-four 18th, after hitting his approach over the back of the green, he was delighted to take control of the popular PGA Tour event hosted by Jack Nicklaus with a nine-under total of 135.

"I've been very fortunate," Haas told reporters after a round which included five birdies, an eagle at the par-five fifth and two bogeys to finish three ahead of compatriot Matt Kuchar (70).

"I hit a couple of loose shots. On number 11, the wind was right-to-left and I hit a provisional, I thought it was out of bounds there.

"We got out there and it (his first tee shot) must have hit a tree and it was fine. I ended up making birdie. That was probably a three-shot swing there. A huge hole for me there."

Swede Robert Karlsson was at four under after shooting a 71, with Americans Pat Perez (69), Hunter Mahan (68) and Australian Matt Jones (72) a further stroke back.

Play was suspended for the day at 7:07 p.m. EDT due to the threat of lightning, after two previous weather delays which totaled just under two hours.

Forty-two players were still out on the course and will have to complete the second round on Saturday morning, resuming at 7:30 a.m.

Among those were overnight leader Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, after 15 holes, and 2012 Masters champion Bubba Watson, after 14, who were both at six under for the tournament.

Haas, who had missed the cut on his previous two starts before spending time with his wife at home following the May 13 birth of their son William, had bitter-sweet feelings over his bogey at the last.

"Obviously disappointing but it was probably my best iron shot of the day," the four-times PGA Tour winner said of his approach on 18. "It carried a little farther than I wanted and stayed up over the green, which is really no good. I hit two nice quality shots on 18."

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Asked how the weather conditions on Friday morning had matched up to the strengthening winds he had to negotiate during his opening 68, Haas replied: "It was pretty similar, actually.

"Maybe even a hair more difficult today, but those greens are lightning fast, I think that's the biggest deal.

"With that kind of wind and that fast of greens, it's very difficult to make putts, and I've just been fortunate to see a few go in," added Haas.

Woods, widely regarded as one of the best putters of all time, did not watch as many putts drop on Friday as he labored to a one-over total of 145, two shots inside the projected cutline.

"Tough conditions out there and I didn't exactly play my best either," said the American world number one who three-putted from just five feet to double-bogey the par-five 15th.

"It's not that hard to make bogeys and doubles on this golf course. You miss it in the wrong spot, get the wrong gust, it's tough."

Woods, who has triumphed four times in just seven starts on the 2013 PGA Tour, ended up with two birdies, two bogeys and a double on his card, but it was the putting he found most frustrating.

"They (putts) were moving all over the place," the 37-year-old said after have to cope on the slick greens as winds gusted up to 25mph.

"It's tough. You try and stay below the hole as best you can, but sometimes you have to get the ball on the green."

The cut was projected to fall at three-over 147 with U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, three-times major winner Vijay Singh and 14-year-old Chinese Guan Tianlang among those likely to miss out.

(Reuters) - Former NBA player Mookie Blaylock was on life support in an Atlanta hospital after being involved in a car crash on Friday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Atlanta Medical Center spokeswoman Nicole Gustin confirmed that Blaylock, 46, who played most of his career with the Atlanta Hawks, was listed in critical condition at the facility, but she could not release other details.

Blaylock was behind the wheel of a Cadillac Escalade on Friday in Clayton County, south of Atlanta, when he crossed over the median and into oncoming traffic, Jonesboro police chief Franklin Allen told the Journal-Constitution. It was not clear why Blaylock's car crossed the center median.

The former basketball player's Cadillac hit another vehicle in a head-on collision, the Journal-Constitution reported. The crash injured two people in addition to Blaylock, and all three people were transported to Atlanta Medical Center, where Blaylock was on life support, Allen told the paper.

Blaylock played in the National Basketball Association from 1989 to 2002. His ability to shut down opposing players twice earned him a place on the NBA All-Defensive First Team.

He played with the Hawks from 1992 to 1999 and also spent time with the New Jersey Nets and Golden State Warriors.

DUBLIN, Ohio | Fri May 31, 2013 5:54pm EDT

DUBLIN, Ohio (Reuters) - Bill Haas readily admits that changing diapers is more difficult than facing a tricky putt on a slick green but the American's game has clearly benefited from the recent birth of his first child.

A four-times winner on the PGA Tour, Haas had missed the cut on his previous two starts on the U.S. circuit this month before returning home to spend welcome time with his young family.

Despite a few sleepless nights there because of his baby son, William Harlan Haas, Jr., the 31-year-old father felt rejuvenated and it showed at the Memorial Tournament on Friday as he charged into an early two-shot lead in the second round.

"I've missed my last two cuts before this week, so certainly my expectations were a little lower than they were earlier this year," Haas told reporters after firing a five-under-par 67 in tough, windy conditions at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

"But I had a great two weeks off. I had a son and I've been having great fun with that at home with my wife. I think I'm just in a better frame of mind than I was three weeks ago after missing my second cut in a row."

BETTER MINDSET

Haas, who missed the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship and then the PGA Tour's flagship Players Championship, knew his mindset was in better shape when he did not react badly to his first bogey of the day on Friday, at the par-three 12th.

"I caught myself angry, but quickly I realized things are going good in my life right now," Haas smiled.

"I don't really say that to myself, but I think that there's a lot more things important going on, so maybe I'm just a little quicker to rebound from being mad."

Haas conceded he had found it extremely painful to leave home for this week's PGA Tour event after being with his wife Julie and their young son for the first two weeks of his life.

"It was very difficult," Haas said. "This is a tough week to skip. Only way I would have skipped it if he (William) was born maybe last week and I felt like I really needed to help my wife at home.

"But she's getting a bunch of help. My parents and her parents both live in town and she's getting a lot of help. And I'm getting tons of pictures and videos. I feel very informed with what's going on."

Haas bogeyed his final hole, the par-four 18th, on Friday after hitting his approach over the back of the green before failing to sink a tricky 12-footer for par.

Asked what was more difficult, that par putt or trying to change a diaper, Haas grinned: "Easiest is the putt on 18 but both are very rewarding. Changing a diaper is very rewarding.

"It's been beyond expectations, you know, raising a child for only two weeks. It's been fantastic and I look forward to the rest of the challenge."

Reuters: Sports News: New Zealand spurns big rule changes as it preps for America's Cup

SAN FRANCISCO | Fri May 31, 2013 5:44pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The head of New Zealand's America's Cup team has sharply rejected the idea of major changes to the sailing competition's high-tech catamarans in the wake of an accident that killed a British sailor.

Grant Dalton, managing director of Emirates Team New Zealand, told Reuters on Thursday that he supported new safety rules put forward last week by event organizers. But he dismissed suggestions by some sailors, including members of the Artemis Racing team that suffered the accident, that big changes such as smaller sails or power-assisted on-board controls were necessary.

"That's not going to happen. That's a fundamental change to systems that if they couldn't get right in the first place, that's their problem," Dalton said before heading out for a practice session on San Francisco Bay.

Artemis' 72-foot (22-metre) catamaran capsized and broke apart on May 9 during a training session and killed British Olympian Andrew Simpson, who was trapped under the wreckage. The accident raised questions about the fundamental soundness of the huge, lightweight boats, which can reach speeds of close to 50 miles per hour (80 kmh).

Software mogul Larry Ellison won the cup in 2010, and the defending champion is entitled to choose the venue and set the rules for the next competition. Ellison and his sailing team hoped the big, fast boats, called AC72s, would boost interest in the event, but their cost and complexity kept some competitors away, and only four teams are competing for the trophy.

The competition is scheduled to kick off in July and culminate in a final match in September.

Dalton and his team, which arrived in San Francisco earlier in May, are prepping eagerly for the competition. Emirates Team New Zealand and Oracle Team USA were both blazing around San Francisco Bay in moderate winds on Thursday, practicing their turns, monitoring boat performance and spying on one another.

REGATTA IN FLUX

The new safety rules include lower wind limits for racing, improved personal safety gear for sailors and reducing the number of qualifying races to allow more time for boat maintenance.

Sweden's Artemis, which has a second boat that it has yet to sail in San Francisco Bay, has said it may not compete if its sailors feel the rule changes are insufficient. The fourth team in the competition, Italy's Luna Rossa, has also expressed serious concerns about safety and has declined to comment on whether it considers the new rules sufficient.

The New Zealand team designed and built its AC72 specifically to withstand the strong gusts and currents of San Francisco Bay, Dalton said. Making significant rule changes now that require altering the boats would be unfair, he said.

"Anything that increases the safety for the guys on board is a good thing. If it doesn't benefit one team over another then we're in favor of that," he said.

Still, he warned that the big catamarans, which use hard "wing" sails and are estimated to cost $8 million to build, are inherently difficult to make and sail.

"As Artemis has shown, if you get this engineered wrong - and it's not hard, we could have yet, we just haven't seen that boundary - they just disintegrate," he said.

Dalton said the carbon-fiber boats have shown themselves to be a poor choice for the cup races.

"Much of this is a folly. There's nothing more easily seen than that there are only three teams (challenging Oracle), now sort of two and a half teams," Dalton said.

DUBLIN, Ohio | Fri May 31, 2013 2:13pm EDT

DUBLIN, Ohio (Reuters) - Charl Schwartzel has victory in his sights at this week's Memorial Tournament but also has the Presidents Cup in sharp focus, even though the biennial competition is four months away.

The Ryder Cup-style event which pits a 12-man team from the United States against a line-up of international players from outside Europe will be held from Oct 4-6 at Muirfield Village Golf Club, the same venue staging this week's PGA Tour stop.

South African Schwartzel was among several likely members of the Internationals team who linked up with captain Nick Price and his assistants here earlier in the week, the latest meeting to plot how to break the virtual U.S. stranglehold on the Cup.

The Americans, captained by Fred Couples, will be bidding to lift the trophy for an eighth time in 10 editions to continue a dominant run which Schwartzel finds hard to explain.

"It's difficult," the 2011 Masters champion told Reuters after taking control of the Memorial Tournament with a sizzling seven-under-par 65 in the opening round at Muirfield Village.

"I don't know why they (the Internationals) have lost so many times but if you look at the stats, the American are always a lot stronger.

"Their 12th man is a lot of times ranked as high as our fourth or fifth so we've got eight other guys who are a lot weaker. We are the underdogs. The stats don't lie."

Schwartzel, who made his Presidents Cup debut at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 2011 when the U.S. triumphed 19-15, accepted that matchplay golf was highly unpredictable but felt that respective rankings would always be a big factor.

"In 18-hole matchplay, anyone can beat anyone at the end of the day, but you know you've earned that 30th world ranking by being more consistent than the guy who is 60th," the slender South African said.

"So over four days the guy who is 30th is going to beat the guy ranked 60th more often than not. That's why he's 30th, so coming down the stretch the Americans will have a stronger team."

EUROPEAN LESSON

Schwartzel, who clinched his maiden major title with a grandstand four-birdie finish to win the 2011 Masters by two strokes, also felt the Internationals could learn from Europe, who have generally gelled superbly as a team at the Ryder Cup.

"We need to get a bit more into it, a bit like the Europeans do, be more of a team and beat the U.S. guys that way," said Schwartzel, referring to Europe's impressive run of seven Ryder Cup victories in the last nine editions.

"We are going to try and play as many practice rounds together as we can (at PGA Tour events) with the guys who are currently in the team.

"The guys are really going to try this year to be up for it, see if we can be more of a team and arrive at Muirfield Village earlier in the week."

Schwartzel predicted that team bonding by the Internationals would be further enhanced by the laidback captaincy style already adopted by three-times major winner Price, a veteran of five Presidents Cups as a player.

"Nick will be a great captain," said Schwartzel. "He is very relaxed which is a good thing because guys who are more relaxed normally play better. I think we will bond a lot earlier this time.

"We've already had a few meetings with Nick and he's asked us to spend a bit of time on certain parts of our games. At the end of the day, though, he wants us to walk off on the Sunday with everyone on the team having had a really good time."

The leading 10 players in the Internationals points standings after the Deutsche Bank Championship ends on September 2 will automatically qualify for the Presidents Cup and Schwartzel is excited that seven South Africans already occupy those spots.

"In a way it's going to be to our benefit because normally you've got players from all over the world on the Internationals team," he said.

"As we all know, you sort of stick with the guys that you know from the same country, so I think it will be a big benefit for us if there are a lot of South Africans and a lot of Australians."

LONDON | Fri May 31, 2013 1:02pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Monaco Grand Prix winners Mercedes can triumph again this season and must not let a tire-testing controversy distract them, Lewis Hamilton said on Friday.

"I really do feel that this team is just going to continue to improve through the year," the 2008 Formula One world champion said at a promotional media day for next month's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

"Once we understand these tires more, which we will eventually get to, then I think another win is definitely on the books," he told Sky Sports News television.

Mercedes won in Monaco with Germany's Nico Rosberg, who also secured the team's fourth successive pole position, while Hamilton finished fourth. The victory was Mercedes's first since China in April last year.

The victory was clouded, however, by the revelation that Mercedes had tested with Pirelli earlier in the month without telling other teams and seemingly in breach of the sporting regulations that ban teams from in-season testing.

After a protest by world champions Red Bull and Ferrari, the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) is now considering whether to send the matter to an international tribunal that could impose heavy sanctions.

Mercedes and Pirelli have both denied doing anything underhand or gaining any competitive advantage over rival teams from the Barcelona test.

"I think it's important that we just stay focused and don't be distracted by a lot of stuff that's around us," said Hamilton, who made his F1 debut in 2007 when McLaren were fined a record $100 million and excluded from the constructors' championship for a spying controversy involving Ferrari data.

"It's so easy to do that (be distracted), and especially for the drivers and the team when we are at the track," continued the Briton, who is in his first season with Mercedes after leaving McLaren.

"I think it's important we just keep our minds clear and just keep doing the job at hand."

LONDON | Fri May 31, 2013 11:10am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Pirelli's 'secret' Formula One tire test with Mercedes this month was nothing of the sort and the team were not favored either, the Italian company said on Friday as the governing body weighed up possible action.

Pirelli denied asking Mercedes to use their current car at the May 15-17 Barcelona test, which caused a storm when details leaked out only last weekend, and said they planned further tests with teams.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) is deliberating whether to order the tiremaker and Mercedes to appear before an international tribunal to face charges of breaking the regulations.

Testing during the season with current cars is banned, although Pirelli are allowed to carry out some 1,000km tests with a 'representative' car to gather data.

Champions Red Bull and Ferrari both protested at last weekend's Monaco Grand Prix, which was won by Mercedes from pole position, and suggested Mercedes had gained an unfair advantage.

"We are very disappointed by some of the coverage that has happened in the media and on social networks," said Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery in a conference call with reporters.

"The main purpose of the test was to start development of our tire for potential involvement in the 2014 F1 world championship. It's not to do with this year.

"The tests were performed with tire specifications that are not used and will not be used in the 2013 world championship. The focus was on 2014," he added.

NO SECRET

Pirelli sent an email to all the teams, the FIA and commercial rights holders on March 12, 2012, pointing out that they were allowed to do such tests and inviting them to indicate their availability.

The invitation was repeated "in various official contexts" and to teams last March as Pirelli sought help to develop tires to cope with the characteristics of a new V6 engine for 2014.

Hembery said Pirelli had not asked Mercedes to use a 2013 car, with that discussed directly between the team and FIA.

"Some people have described the tests as 'secret'. Well, I don't think we're going to win any James Bond prizes. We booked the circuit in our name, two days after an F1 race, we turned up in our trucks and dressed as Pirelli people with a brightly-colored Mercedes car," he added.

Asked why Pirelli had not tested with the 2010 Renault they have used in the past, Hembery said it was unavailable because it was doing a demonstration in the Philippines and also unrepresentative.

"These tests were performed blind. Mercedes had, and still have, no idea what was being tested. There was no benefit to them," he added.

The tests in Barcelona involved a base compound not in use this year and 12 different structures also not used in 2013.

Pirelli said prototype tires to be used in Friday practice at next week's Canadian Grand Prix had not been tested by Mercedes.

They said the 'delamination' problems, experienced when tires are damaged by debris and shed their treads without deflating, had been resolved by technicians working in the company's laboratories with data from races.

"We envisage other tests during the year looking at 2014 and we certainly will be hoping to have other tests with teams who are willing to perform that," said Hembery.

DUBLIN, Ohio | Thu May 30, 2013 9:06pm EDT

DUBLIN, Ohio (Reuters) - Tiger Woods had plenty of fun playing with good friend Fred Couples in Thursday's opening round of the Memorial Tournament, but was frustrated after failing to capitalizes on good ball-striking in tough conditions.

While PGA Tour veteran Couples surprised himself with his own good play on lightning-fast greens that became increasingly bumpy for the late starters, Woods had to settle for a one-under-par 71 after mixing five birdies with four bogeys.

"It was probably the highest score I could have shot today," five-times Memorial champion Woods told reporters after launching his title defense with a total of 30 putts on a hot, muggy and breezy afternoon at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

"Didn't capitalize on a few opportunities I had. Short irons, I didn't hit them close enough. All in all it was a pretty high score.

"But I played a lot better than my score indicates. Hopefully tomorrow I can clean up, make a few more putts and get a roll."

Woods, who has clinched four victories in just seven starts on the 2013 PGA Tour, is considered one of the best putters of all time but he struggled on greens he described as "a little crusty and a little bumpy".

He added: "I just didn't make anything today. I thought I hit good putts. I misread a couple pretty badly.

"Chipping is tough around here. You've got to leave it in the correct spots. I left all my chip shots on the correct spots where I had uphill putts coming for the next one.

"And unfortunately I didn't bury those," added Woods, who was six shots behind leader Charl Schwartzel of South Africa.

BEATEN BY COUPLES

Asked what he thought of the five-birdie 70 carded by the 53-year-old Couples, who will captain the U.S. Presidents Cup team against the Internationals in October at Muirfield Village, Woods smiled: "Yeah, kicked my ass."

Overall, though, Woods thoroughly enjoyed being grouped with former Masters champion Couples and fellow American Keegan Bradley, who also opened with a 71.

"We had a good time," said Woods, a 14-times major winner. "We had our spells when we were having a lot of fun and had spells when it got a little quiet out there.

"I made a few mistakes, so did Keegs. It had its moments."

Couples, champion here in 1998, was delighted with his round after playing no competitive golf for a month since he tied for fourth in the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf in Savannah, Georgia on the over-50s Champions Tour.

"I was not expecting 70," the laid-back Couples beamed. "I'm not going to lie to anyone. But I'm thrilled. I've not been playing any golf. I skipped last week.

"To be honest, I sent him (Woods) a text and said, 'Do you really want me in this group? I've played no golf.' You're nervous playing with him.

"But I was more nervous, because I've not played since Savannah with Jay Haas and I didn't play well there, so to go through all that ... but I did beat him (Woods)," he added with a laugh.

Couples, who has played just four times on the Champions Tour and twice on the PGA Tour this season, outlined the strategy he usually adopts when paired with Woods in competition.

"My goal when I play with him always is to try to hit it solid and stay out of his way," he said.

"And today was a good one. I've putted extremely well and I look forward to playing tomorrow."
