Perry ends heartbreak with Senior Players title
Jun 30th 2013, 22:49

Sun Jun 30, 2013 6:49pm EDT

(Reuters) - Kenny Perry seized his long awaited first seniors major title with a stellar final round at the Senior Players Championship on Sunday.

Perry shot a six-under 64 to vault past overnight leader Fred Couples and finish at 19-under 261 as he claimed a two-shot victory at the Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh.

Perry, 52, had suffered playoff losses at the 1996 PGA Championship and 2009 Masters before losing last month's Senior PGA Championship despite a two-stroke lead.

This time, he trailed Couples by two heading into the last round but forged a comeback with a bogey-free round.

After Couples three-putted at No. 15 to give Perry a one-stroke lead, the eventual winner hit consecutive approach shots to tap-in range on the 16th and 17th holes.

Couples had a final chance to tie on the par-5 18th, but after he reaching the green in two shots his 45-foot putt slid past the hole.

Couples finished at 17-under 263, tied with Duffy Waldorf for second.

Michael Allen and John Huston shared fourth at 12-under 268.

Formula One in crisis mode after tire failures
Jun 30th 2013, 18:51

By Alan Baldwin

SILVERSTONE | Sun Jun 30, 2013 2:51pm EDT

SILVERSTONE (Reuters) - Formula One and tire supplier Pirelli faced a full-on crisis on Sunday after the British Grand Prix came close to being stopped for safety reasons due to a spate of explosive high-speed blowouts.

The spectre of Indianapolis 2005, when only six Bridgestone-shod cars competed in a farce of a U.S. Grand Prix because all those equipped by tire supplier Michelin could not compete safely, lurked in the background.

There were also uneasy flashbacks to the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, when Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa suffered a near-fatal head injury after being struck by debris thrown up from a car in front.

With television images broadcast around the world showing bucking cars scraping along on rear left wheel rims stripped of rubber, the drivers wrestling to keep them on the road, the sport breathed a sigh of relief that the race had ended safely.

Race director Charlie Whiting told reporters that it had been a close call, however.

"It was quite close to being red flagged. It did occur to me to do that," he said, when asked how many more failures it would have taken before he had acted. "I don't want to put a figure on it but it was close.

"I don't think we've seen anything like this. I can't remember anything. To have four total catastrophic failures, I believe, is a first."

Britain's Lewis Hamilton, the 2008 world champion who had led for Mercedes from pole position, was the first casualty when his rear tire blew after eight laps at around 200kph and shed debris behind him.

He was followed by Ferrari's Felipe Massa, Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne - who was going the fastest of all - and then McLaren's Sergio Perez. Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez had a front tire failure.

Mercedes' race winner Nico Rosberg had signs of imminent delamination - when tread peels away from the rest of the tire - when he made a pitstop and champions Red Bull said cuts were found on the tires of triple champion Sebastian Vettel, who retired with a gearbox problem.

JUST UNACCEPTABLE

"The safety is the biggest issue," said Hamilton, his words echoed by others around the paddock in a sport that has not had a fatality on track since Ayrton Senna died at Imola in 1994. "It's just unacceptable.

"Someone could've crashed. I was thinking behind the safety car that it's only when someone gets hurt that something will be done about it."

With the next race in Germany only a week away, Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery said the Italian company - which has come under fire all season for the performance of its product - was making the investigation a top priority.

"We can exclude that the new bonding process, which we introduced at this race, is a cause for the tire failures we have seen today," he added.

"There might be some aspect to this circuit that impacts specifically on the latest version of our 2013 specification tires but at this point we do not want to speculate."

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh declined to use the word crisis but said safety was the main concern.

"We are lucky no one has been hurt," he told reporters. "For people like Checo (Perez) it has destroyed his weekend, but first and foremost we are primarily concerned about the safety of our drivers.

"I think there is an argument that Nuerburgring is a slightly less severe circuit than Silverstone, but we have Spa (Belgium) looming not long after that and we would certainly not want to go there with these tyres."

Whitmarsh said the sport could not wait for a scheduled meeting of the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) working committee on Wednesday to discuss the situation.

"You just have to say to Pirelli 'Do whatever you can do by Germany'," he said. "They know what stock they have, they know what they can do practically before Germany and they should do whatever they can to enhance the safety and durability of the tyres."

Asked whether the German race might be cancelled, Whitmarsh suggested a solution would be to go back to last year's specification of tyres.

"In fairness to Pirelli, I don't know how they can respond in such short order but we have to do what we can to support them," he said.

"We don't want an Indianapolis but cancelling a race is a big step, we don't have all the technical insight Pirelli have," he continued. "All I would ask is they do everything they can to give us the most durable tyres they can for next weekend."

Red Bull principal Christian Horner agreed.

"The most logical thing would be to go back to the tyres that worked well for them previously," he told reporters. "The tyres they had last year did not have these failures.

"Whatever has changed, has changed but you would have thought the most logical thing would be to go back to the tires that had served them well."

LONDON | Sun Jun 30, 2013 1:14pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Serena Williams will head a cast of fresh-faced hopefuls on Monday as Wimbledon heads into the second week which will be a Federer-free zone for the first time in 11 years.

A second week which had promised back-to-back blockbuster matches after Murray, seven-times champion Roger Federer and 2008 and 2010 winner Rafa Nadal had been thrown together in the same half of the draw, will instead have a distinctly unfamiliar look to it following an unforgettable week of shocks.

Gone are Federer, Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka - all former world number ones, all grand slam champions and who between them own 35 major trophies.

Instead, the second week line-up includes an array of characters who had turned up at the All England Club expecting to play a supporting role but have been thrust into the limelight of a last-16 appearance.

French duo Kenny de Schepper and Adrian Mannarino, Poland's Jerzy Janowicz, Italy's Karin Knapp and Puerto Rican Monica Puig are ranked outside the world's top 20, have never won a main-tour title and had never previously reached the fourth round of a major.

Yet they all stand to pocket the biggest checks of their lives - at least $159,000 - after a trail of destruction decimated the field at the grass court major.

"It's good for change in a way because top players are always expected to reach the final stages of major events. When it doesn't happen, it's a big surprise," Djokovic told reporters.

"It's a bit (of a) strange feeling not to have Federer or Nadal at the second week of a major. In the last 10 years, it was always one of them. But there's some (other) players who have been playing great tennis. I think it's interesting also to see new faces for the crowd, for (the) tennis world in general."

Nowhere is that more evident than in the bottom half of the draw where the highest seed world number two Murray can face before a hotly anticipated final against top-ranked Djokovic is his next opponent - Russian oddball and 20th seed Mikhail Youzhny.

The Russian is not averse to seeking outside help when things are not going his way as 12 months ago while he was being thrashed by Federer he went over to Centre Court's Royal Box and asked American great Andre Agassi how to beat the Swiss.

If he was to repeat the cheeky request to any of the 15,000 fans who will be packed into Centre Court on Monday, it will fall on deaf years as he will be playing the man Britain expects to end the host nation's 77-year search for a men's champion.

HOME INTEREST

In fact, Britmania will reach a 15-year peak as for the first time since 1998, home interest will still be alive in both singles draws on the second Monday.

Laura Robson has finally started to live up to the promise she showed five summers ago when she won the junior Wimbledon title and will be backed to reach her first major quarter-final as she will be taking on Estonia's Kaia Kanepi, an opponent ranked eight places below the British number one.

While Robson's odds of winning the title are being slashed on a daily basis by excited British bookmakers, Djokovic remains the man to beat in the men's draw.

He has yet to drop a set and has surrendered a miserly 29 games, two fewer than Murray, in his three matches to date.

In the pick of the fourth-round showdowns, he is facing renaissance man Tommy Haas.

The German, who plummeted from a career-high second in the world in 2002 to almost 900th in June 2011, is playing some of the best tennis of his life at the age of 35 and loves playing on grass.

He shocked Federer to win the Halle title last June and knows he has the weapons to hurt the world number one as he downed Djokovic in both of their previous grass court showdowns and also in Miami earlier this year.

"Against Tommy Haas, it's going to be a big challenge for both of us. He had a few great wins lately," said Djokovic.

"He played again really well this season on grass. In general, this season he played great. He's 35, 36 years old, and he's been playing very close to the best tennis of his life, in my opinion. He's very fit. He doesn't look like a 35â€'yearâ€'old man, for sure. He's full of confidence on the court."

Woman's holder Williams is another member of the over-30s club and at 31, there is no doubt she is playing the best tennis of her life.

Winner of three of the last four slams, world number one Williams is hurtling towards grand slam title number 17, and sixth at Wimbledon, and so far no one has come close to derailing her.

Up next for her is Sabine Lisicki. The German beat Sharapova en route to the last eight 12 months ago and made it all the way to the semis in 2011 but only the very brave would put money on her replicating the feat this year.

SILVERSTONE | Sun Jun 30, 2013 11:32am EDT

SILVERSTONE (Reuters) - Germany's Nico Rosberg won a dramatic British Grand Prix for Mercedes on Sunday after one of several explosive tire failures scuppered team mate Lewis Hamilton's hopes of home victory.

On an afternoon that also saw triple world champion Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull break down while leading, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso boosted his title hopes with an unexpected third place.

Vettel has 132 points to the Spaniard's 111 after eight of 19 races, with the German's home race at the Nuerburgring next up in a week's time.

Australian Mark Webber, who had started on the second row but plunged to 14th at the end of the first lap after a nightmare start, finished second to continue a run of Silverstone podium finishes dating back to 2009.

"It's a very, very special day," said Rosberg of his second win of the season.

"With Lewis, I feel sorry for all the British fans. It would have been a great race for Lewis here in front of his home crowd. That's racing sometimes," said Rosberg in a podium interview with 1996 champion Damon Hill.

"When Sebastian stopped, I won't lie. I wasn't disappointed by that one. And it was just a great race from then," added the German, who beat Webber by 0.7 seconds after a thrilling last seven laps following the second safety car.

Hamilton had started on pole, chasing his first win for Mercedes since his move from McLaren, and led for the first eight laps until the 2008 world champion's rear left tire exploded in a flash of flailing rubber.

He nursed his bucking car around the circuit, pitted in 18th place and returned to the track 21st with his hopes of victory wrecked.

It was the start of a mighty drive by the Briton, who ended the race in fourth place.

"Wonderful drive, Lewis," said team principal Ross Brawn over the team radio at the finish. "Sorry it didn't quite work out but well done."

TYRE FAILURES

Hamilton's blowout was the first of five rear left failures in a race with two safety car stints - one of them caused by Vettel whose car ground to a halt on the pit straight while he was leading.

"Lost the drive, lost the gearbox," the German shouted over the radio.

Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa, Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne in the Toro Rosso and Mexicans Esteban Gutierrez and Sergio Perez for Sauber and McLaren respectively also suffered tire failures.

Red Bull said they found cuts in Vettel's tire after he had pitted while Mercedes detected the start of delamination in Rosberg's rear left.

"We have seen something new, a different type of problem. We're currently performing our analysis, we've got to go away and understand what has happened today," said Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery.

"It was one tire at the back, left rear, so we need to understand that. It's pointless me adding anything else until we have all the facts," he told reporters.

Massa went to the back of the field after he pitted on three tires and a rim but also fought back to finish sixth, behind Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen.

Raikkonen set a Formula One record for his 25th successive points finish.

Germany's Adrian Sutil was seventh for Force India with Ausralian Daniel Ricciardo eighth for Toro Rosso.

Britain's Paul Di Resta was ninth for Force India, after qualifying fifth on Saturday and then being demoted to the back row of the grid when his car was found to be underweight.

Germany's Nico Hulkenberg took the final point for Sauber, with former champions Williams finishing empty-handed for the ninth race in a row. Their Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado was 11th.
