Australians pushing for thrifty America's Cup

MELBOURNE | Tue Oct 1, 2013 12:48am EDT

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australia's Hamilton Island Yacht Club will push to ensure the next America's Cup does not boil down to a "race of money" with Larry Ellison's Oracle Team USA, but will fight hard to woo the country's top sailing talent back from the defender.

Hamilton Island, owned by wine magnate and sailing enthusiast Bob Oatley and run by his son Sandy, was confirmed by the Golden Gate Yacht Club as the Challenger of Record for the 35th America's Cup late on Monday.

The 34th Cup that wrapped up last week had only three challengers, with the costs of the campaign, which was raced in super-fast AC72 catamarans, put in excess of $100 million and cited as the main reason why so few teams went to San Francisco.

As the Challenger of Record, Hamilton Island will help shape the rules for the next regatta with Oracle, whose software tycoon owner has also talked of the need to contain costs after being criticised for the complexity of the hi-tech AC72s.

Sandy Oatley praised Oracle and the beaten Team New Zealand for putting on a thrilling regatta in San Francisco Bay after raising the technology stakes but said lower costs would help attract more challengers for the next incarnation, set for 2016.

"It did cost a lot, the technology, but I think they've taken it into the next realm of sailing," he told Reuters in an interview by phone from Sydney.

"I think the way they've developed it in this case has made it very exciting and all the people who were able to watch it were absolutely amazed.

"I think (overseas competitors) are all welcoming the fact of trying to contain the costs.

"My father Bob was saying, for a sailing race, we're trying to get the emphasis 100 percent on sailing, with 50 percent on the sailing expertise, 40 percent the boat and 10 percent in technology and development.

"We can put some boxes around the boats and the sails so it doesn't become a race of money."

FINDING FUNDS

Forbes has ranked Oatley, who made his fortune first as a coffee trader and then as a vintner, as Australia's 25th richest with just under $1 billion. Ellison is the world's fifth richest man with $43 billion.

Backed by NZ$36 million ($29.98 million) in public funds, Team New Zealand were overhauled by Oracle after storming to an 8-1 lead in the first to nine-points regatta, as the defenders worked over-time to glean extra speed from their boat in the final week.

While Bob Oatley has entered a series of successful super-maxi yachts in the Sydney-to-Hobart long-distance ocean race, one of the world's most testing offshore challenges, ensuring funds to compete with Oracle will be paramount.

Sandy Oatley said the Australian challenge was yet to sign any corporate backers, and like Team New Zealand did, would seek support from government coffers.

"We'll be talking to (the government)," he said. "I'm sure it will be of keen interest to them but we haven't spoken to them yet. I think they've got bigger things on their mind right now.

"We're talking to (potential corporate sponsors), but we weren't really talking (before) because we weren't really sure what was happening," he said.

"That'll happen in the next couple of weeks. We're looking for a great Australian challenge with some Australian corporates and great Australian sailors."

While concerned about costs, Oatley said the challenger's preference would be to see some version of the high-speed catamarans retained for the next series and more fleet racing in the leadup.

"It was very exciting, the racing, and anyone that saw the America's Cup would know that you've only got to make one little mistake and suddenly you go from first to last," he said.

Hamilton Island's challenge comes 30 years after Australia II's 1983 victory over the Dennis Conner-skippered Liberty, which ended the 132-year-old U.S. chokehold over the famous sailing trophy and sparked huge celebrations Down Under.

The 35th America's Cup will be the first time Australia has had an entry, however, since Oracle captain James Spithill skippered 'Young Australia' in the 30th edition in Auckland in 2000.

Australian sailors have been in force at America's Cup challenges since, however, and Oatley said luring the likes of Spithill and Oracle strategist Tom Slingsby, who won a sailing gold at the London Olympics, away from the U.S. team would be a high priority.

"We don't know contractually how the Oracle boys are all tied up but that will all happen in the future and once we work out the protocols for the 35th race, we'll see," he said.

"There are lots of great Australian sailors and Jimmy Spithill's top of the list at the moment with his recent success.

"(1983) really brought Australia together and it came home to us last week ... It was a great thing what they did and we're hoping to do the same again for Australia."

(Reuters) - Drew Brees led the undefeated Saints to a crushing 38-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Monday as New Orleans continue to put last year's nightmare season well behind them.

Brees completed 30-of-39 attempts for 413 yards passing and tossed four touchdown passes as the Saints dominated a match-up between previously unbeaten teams, improving to 4-0 while dropping the visiting Dolphins to 3-1.

New Orleans' start to the 2013 campaign is a far cry from a year ago when they lost their first four games while coach Sean Payton served a year suspension for involvement in a bounty program, eventually missing the playoffs with a 7-9 record.

Restored to full strength, New Orleans have looked a different proposition and jumped 7-0 ahead of Miami on their first drive of the game and never took their foot off the gas.

Darren Sproles scored on a five-yard run on the initial possession and added a 13-yard receiving TD at the end of the second quarter to give the Saints a 21-10 halftime lead.

Sproles finished with seven catches for 114 yards.

Tight end Jimmy Graham also had a big day to continue his great start to the season.

The big target caught 100 receiving yards and two TD passes, the second coming midway through the third quarter on a 43-yard bomb that put New Orleans 35-10 in front.

Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill added a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter but finished with three interceptions and one lost fumble, where Garrett Hartley also kicked a field goal for the Saints.

(Reuters) - The visiting Tampa Bay Rays claimed the last berth in Major League Baseball's postseason by beating the Texas Rangers 5-2 in a wild card tiebreaker on Monday.

Tampa Bay's slugging third baseman Evan Longoria went 3-for-4 with a single, a double and a two-run home run in the third inning to support reigning Cy Young winner David Price, who hurled a complete game seven-hitter for the win.

Victory in the tiebreaker, which was needed after the two teams finished the regular season with 91-71 records, gave the Rays the American League's second wild card berth.

They will face the Cleveland Indians in a one-off game on Wednesday with the winner to play a best-of-five Division Series against the Boston Red Sox.

There was also a measure of revenge for Tampa Bay, who had been eliminated by Texas in the Division Series in their last two playoff appearances in 2010 and 2011.

Price improved to 10-8 in the game that counted as the 163rd game of the regular season, while the Rangers' 22-year-old rookie left-hander Martin Perez of Venezuela dropped to 10-8 after giving up three runs in five and one-third innings.

PARK CITY, Utah | Mon Sep 30, 2013 7:48pm EDT

PARK CITY, Utah (Reuters) - While some athletes danced around Russia's anti-gay legislation on Monday American skiing great Bode Miller met the issue head on by calling next year's Sochi Winter Olympic hosts "ignorant."

Speaking at the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) media summit, the outspoken Miller was very clear on his view of a controversial Russian law which bans the spread of homosexual propaganda among minors.

"It is absolutely embarrassing that there are countries and people who are that intolerant, that ignorant, said Miller, who will be bidding for a place on his fifth U.S. Olympic team.

"But it's not the first time we've been dealing with human rights issues since there were humans."

Critics say the law bars all gay rights rallies and could be used to prosecute anyone voicing support for homosexuals while supporters say it will help protect children.

Earlier, six members of the U.S. figure skating team were also asked their thoughts on the law that has drawn worldwide condemnation and cast a shadow over the buildup to the February 7-23 Winter Games.

All of the figure skaters, with the exception of U.S. women's champion Ashley Wagner, danced around the delicate issue saying they were only athletes and leaving it up to the USOC and International Olympic Committee (IOC) to establish a position.

Miller, however, has seldom let anyone else speak for him and has never shied away from controversy during a skiing career that has made him one of the sport's most popular and successful athletes.

The five-time Olympic medallist, who once broke away from the U.S. ski federation to form his own team, also had a shot for the USOC and the IOC for not standing up for the values of tolerance and openness they preach in their charters.

"I think it's crappy that we don't have a better system dealing with that stuff," said Miller. "Asking an athlete to go somewhere and compete and be a representative of a philosophy and all the crap that goes along with it and then tell them they can't express their views or say what they believe I think is pretty hypocritical.

"If they let me make the rules I will switch it for you immediately, I can solve a lot of stuff really quickly but unfortunately no one has elected me or given me that kind of power.

"My main emotion when I hear about stuff like that is embarrassment. As a human being I think it is embarrassing."

Australia returns to challenge for America's Cup

MELBOURNE | Mon Sep 30, 2013 8:38pm EDT

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australian wine magnate Bob Oatley's Hamilton Island Yacht Club has been confirmed as the Challenger of Record for the 35th America's Cup, organizers said on Tuesday.

Oatley and his son Sandy issued the challenge to the Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) minutes after Larry Ellison's Oracle Team USA beat Team New Zealand in a winner-takes-all race on San Francisco Bay last week.

"We're very proud. We've been watching the 34th America's Cup and watching the catamarans racing around San Francisco Bay and seeing some of our fellow Australian sailors participating and seeing what a shame it is that Australia doesn't have a team to compete in this arena," Sandy Oatley told Reuters by phone.

"It's always been on every sailor's wish-list to compete in the America's Cup.

"Dad always wanted to do it, we just went last week to the 30th anniversary of Australia II winning the America's Cup from Liberty and so its sort of been building for a while."

The GGYC confirmed Hamilton Island Yacht Club's (HIYC) challenge late on Monday, two days after Reuters reported that an employee of the Oatleys had delivered the challenge seconds after Oracle crossed the line to seal victory on Wednesday.

As the Challenger of Record, the club will help shape the rules for the 35th America's Cup along with the defender. Additional challengers are expected to emerge as the next competition takes shape in the coming years.

SAILING PEDIGREE

Bob Oatley made a fortune first as a coffee trader and then as a vintner, and bought Hamilton Island, an idyllic resort in Queensland state's Great Barrier Reef, in 2003.

A long-time competitive sailing enthusiast, Oatley's series of super-maxi yachts, all named 'Wild Oats', have won multiple times one of the world's most challenging offshore challenges - the Sydney-to-Hobart long-distance ocean race.

"We are delighted to have Hamilton Island Yacht Club and the Oatleys leading Australia back into the America's Cup for the first time since 2000," GGYC Vice Commodore and America's Cup liaison Tom Ehman said in a statement.

"Hamilton Island's challenge was filed on the day Australia was celebrating the 30th anniversary of Australia II's historic win in the 1983 Americas Cup off Newport, Rhode Island, which ended New York Yacht Club's 132-year reign as the Cup's defender."

Ehman said both parties would work together to establish the protocols for the next regatta, while the GGYC would choose the next venue with the details finalized by early 2014.

"Both clubs are keen to have multiple challengers, as has been the norm since 1970, and to cut campaign costs for all teams," Ehman added.

The 34th America's Cup had only three challengers, with the costs of the campaign, which was raced in high-tech, super-fast AC72 catamarans, put in excess of $100 million and cited as the main reason why so few teams went to San Francisco.

SPONSORS POSITIVE

Forbes ranked Oatley as Australia's 25th richest with just under $1 billion. Ellison is the world's fifth richest man with $43 billion.

Sandy Oatley said the team was yet to confirm sponsorship arrangements for what has become an exorbitant undertaking but had received "very positive feedback" from potential Australian backers.

"We're looking for a great Australian challenge with some Australian corporates and some great Australian sailors.

"I think it's more getting Australia back in the arena and I think they're all welcoming the fact of trying to contain the costs."

The 35th America's Cup will be the first time that Australia has had an entry since Oracle captain James Spithill skippered 'Young Australia' in the 30th edition in Auckland in 2000, despite the country's strong sailing tradition.

Yachting Australia (YA) hailed the challenge, coming after the 30th anniversary of Australia II's win with an innovative winged keel, one of the nation's proudest sporting moments.

"We look forward to working with the club to create a pathway for Australia's young sailors to compete at the top level," YA CEO Phil Jones said in a statement.

"This challenge will help to inspire Australia's next group of champion sailors as the dream of racing for the America's Cup on a boat with an Australian flag will now be within reach."

(Reuters) - The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals are top seeds in Major League Baseball's playoffs but they take a back seat on Monday as the postseason line-up will be completed with a Texas-Tampa Bay tiebreaker game.

The Rangers and Rays finished the regular season with 91-71 records, thus forcing a one-game tiebreaker to determine which club travels to Cleveland to play the Indians in a do-or-die, American League wild card showdown on Wednesday.

Reigning Cy Young winner David Price will take the mound for the visiting Rays, while Texas counters with rookie left-hander Martin Perez, backed by the return of slugging outfielder Nelson Cruz, fresh off a 50-game suspension.

"I'm sorry for my mistake, but I'm ready to move on," said Cruz, who belted 27 home runs in 108 games before being banned following MLB's probe into the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic accused of distributing performance enhancing drugs.

Price, who battled injuries on the way to a 9-8 record this season, has revenge in mind against Texas. The hard-throwing left-hander has a 1-7 career mark versus them and lost all three of his career postseason starts against the Rangers.

"This is the moment I want to be in," Price said. "I want to be able to relish this moment and go out there and have fun."

The survivor of the American League wild card drama will win a trip to Boston to take on the AL East champion Red Sox (97-65) in a best-of-five Division Series starting on Friday.

St. Louis (97-65) already knows it will encounter a familiar rival in their Division Series beginning on Thursday, since the NL wild card duel will be between fellow NL Central residents the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds, who play on Tuesday.

"This division has been incredibly tough all year and those guys have been with us neck and neck the whole season,' said Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter. "I think it's fitting that we're in a match-up with one of them that first round."

The other National League Division Series will have the West-winning Los Angeles Dodgers (92-70) traveling to Atlanta to take on the East champion Braves (96-66).

Atlanta, who had MLB's best home mark this season at 56-25, won their season-series against the Dodgers 5-2.

Still, the glamorous Dodgers, whose new ownership group, which includes former basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, poured hundreds of millions of dollars into building a winner, garner the lion's share of attention.

"Nobody's picked us all year anyway," said Braves third baseman Chris Johnson. "Nobody picked us to win the division; it was the Nationals' year. So we've already been through stuff like that."

The Dodgers got some bad injury news on Sunday as star center-fielder Matt Kemp was ruled out of the playoffs because of an ankle injury while back-up Andre Ethier was hobbled by shin splints.

"If we don't have Matt and we don't have Andre, you're not as good as you can be," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, who still has a formidable one-two pitching punch in Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. "We're still good enough to win."

The other Division Series in the American League will be a rematch from last year with West winners the Oakland A's (96-66) hosting the Central champion Detroit Tigers starting on Friday.

Detroit, who beat Oakland in five games last year, boast sluggers Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, and have a daunting trio of starters in 20-game winner Max Scherzer, former Cy Young winner Justin Verlander and ERA champion Anibal Sanchez.

The thrifty A's, masterfully operating on a tight budget as chronicled in the best-selling book and movie "Moneyball," used their formula of strong pitching, high on-base percentage and clutch hitting to repeat in the West.

"We are not going to give up anything to anybody without a fight," said third baseman Josh Donaldson, who enjoyed a breakout season with 24 home runs and a .301 batting average.

"Every inning, every out, every game, we fight. Whoever we play will know they've been in a battle."

The Tigers (93-69) finished the season with a whimper, losing three in a row to the NL-worst Miami Marlins capped by a no-hitter thrown against them on Sunday by Henderson Alvarez.

"Guys will come back Tuesday with a whole fresh look on a new start to a new season," manager Jim Leyland said.

Hernandez's cousin ordered held in murder case against ex-NFL star
Sep 30th 2013, 17:37

BOSTON | Mon Sep 30, 2013 1:37pm EDT

BOSTON (Reuters) - The cousin of Aaron Hernandez, the ex-NFL star who is accused of murdering semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, was ordered held without bail on Monday on charges that she planned to help cover up the killing, prosecutors said.

Tanya Singleton, 37, pleaded not guilty during her arraignment in Fall River, Massachusetts, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said in a news release.

Prosecutors had broadened their murder case against Hernandez on Friday by indicting Singleton along with Hernandez's fiancée Shayana Jenkins and his friend Carlos Ortiz, on charges related to Lloyd's murder.

Jenkins and Ortiz are due to be arraigned in October.

Hernandez was a star tight end of the New England Patriots when he was arrested on June 26 for the alleged execution-style murder of Lloyd, whose bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial area near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. He was cut by the team within hours of his arrest.

Prosecutors charge that Hernandez called Lloyd to his home on the night of June 17 and drove him, along with Ortiz and another friend, Ernest Wallace, to the industrial area where they say Hernandez shot Lloyd dead.

A spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, Gregg Miliote, said last week that Ortiz now claims Hernandez was the only person who got out of the vehicle with Lloyd on the night of the murder, reversing previous testimony that Wallace had also left the vehicle.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and related firearms charges.

Lawyers for Ortiz, who is charged with accessory after the fact, did not respond to requests for comment. Jenkins, charged with perjury, and Singleton, charged with conspiracy to commit accessory after the fact, were not immediately reachable, nor were their lawyers.

Lloyd, 27, had been dating Jenkins' sister. Prosecutors said Hernandez soured on him a few nights before the body was found and that the two had argued after Lloyd socialized at a nightclub with people Hernandez disliked.

Wallace has also been charged with accessory to murder after the fact, prosecutors said.

Comcast to bid for Houston sports network if court forces sale

(Reuters) - Comcast Corp is prepared to bid if it can force a sale of the financially troubled, regional-sports network that carries the games of the Houston Astros baseball team and the Houston Rockets, the city's basketball team, court papers show.

Affiliates of Comcast, which owns NBCUniversal, on Friday filed for involuntary bankruptcy against Houston Regional Sports Network LP, and said in court papers the network should be put up for sale for the benefit of creditors.

Comcast "believes the network's assets have meaningful value, and would be prepared to make a bid to acquire either the network (under a plan of reorganization) or substantially all of its assets," the media conglomerate said in court documents.

Comcast also said that it wanted the court to appoint a trustee to replace the network's management, which is at a "complete impasse," according to court documents.

The network's three-member board consists of representatives of Comcast, the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association and the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball, according to documents filed by a Comcast affiliate.

The network has been locked in a dispute with cable and satellite television providers over how much it should receive per subscriber, which has limited the network's reach.

Comcast, which loaned the network $100 million through an affiliate, also said it was prepared to provide the financing necessary to keep the network operating until the bankruptcy could be resolved.

The Astros called the filing "improper," although the team had not been paid its media rights fees by the network for the last three months, according to a Friday press release.

Creditors can put a company into bankruptcy involuntarily if they can prove the debtor is not paying its bills. The company generally has about 20 days to respond to the filing.

Creditors of Allied Systems Holding Inc, a major hauler of cars for auto dealers that was majority owned by private equity firm Yucaipa Cos, used an involuntary bankruptcy petition to force the company into Chapter 11 last year.

The case is In Re: Houston Regional Sports Network LP, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Texas, No. 13-35998

(Reuters) - Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano will replace the injured Peter Hanson in the Continental Europe team for this week's Seve Trophy near Paris, the European Tour announced on Monday.

Swede Hanson has withdrawn from the biennial contest against Britain and Ireland at St-Nom-La Breteche Golf Club due to a back injury that has affected him for most of the season.

Hanson, 35, said: "I am really disappointed not to be able to play. Everyone knows how much I love matchplay events.

"My back has been an issue for pretty much most of the year and it is still not 100 percent. I have my defense of the BMW Masters in China coming up which is part of the Final Series of the European Tour and I want to be in ideal shape for that full run of tournaments."

Hanson's mind coach Torsten Hansson said the player was still practicing but did not think his back would stand up to the rigors of the Seve Trophy.

He added Hanson was about to spend two weeks in Florida, where he is based, receiving treatment on a compressed disc.

Fernandez-Castano, who will be making his third appearance in the contest, said: "I really enjoyed the two previous contests I played and it is important to support a tournament with Seve's name on it, not only because of what he did for Spanish golf, but for what he did for the game in Europe and the European Tour as a whole.

"I wanted to show my respect for him. It was a privilege to play under Seve in 2007 and under Thomas Bjorn in 2009, and it is a dream come true for me now to play in the Seve Trophy with Jose Maria (Olazabal) as captain.

Fernandez-Castano is joined by his fellow Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, Danish duo Thomas Bjorn and Thorbjorn Olesen, Frenchman Gregory Bourdy, Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, Finland's Mikko Ilonen Dutchman Joost Luiten, and the Italian pair of Matteo Manassero and Francesco Molinari.

They will take on a Britain and Ireland team captained by Sam Torrance and featuring five Englishmen; Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood, Simon Khan, David Lynn and Chris Wood, four Scotsmen; Stephen Gallacher, Scott Jamieson, Paul Lawrie, and Marc Warren, and Welshman Jamie Donaldson.

The event format is similar to the Ryder Cup with foursomes and fourballs followed by the singles matches on the final day. A team requires 14½ points for victory.

Continental Europe won the first contest 13 years ago, while Britain and Ireland have won the last six in succession, claiming a 15½-12½ success two years ago.

Munich decides to bid for 2022 Winter Olympics
Sep 30th 2013, 15:38

BERLIN | Mon Sep 30, 2013 11:38am EDT

BERLIN (Reuters) - Bavarian capital Munich, which hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics, will make a bid to stage the Winter Games half a century later in 2022, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) said on Monday.

Munich, which failed to land the 2018 Olympics after being comfortably beaten by South Korea's Pyeongchang, will have to wait for a November 10 referendum before formally announcing a candidacy with the International Olympic Committee by the November 14 deadline.

Should Munich be elected in 2015 it would be the first city to have been awarded Summer and Winter Olympics.

"The DOSB is moving ahead with its plans for a bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2022," it said in a statement.

"The next step is a referendum in the communities of Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen as well as in the counties of Berchtesgadener Land and Traunstein on November 10, four days before the bid has to be announced to the IOC."

The previous Munich bid had faced several obstacles from Garmisch residents as well as German environmental groups and the Greens political party over the impact to the Alpine community as well as land disputes.

DOSB officials said their new plans would reduce the burden on Garmisch while also spreading the Games to a three-cluster complex after moving the biathlon and cross-country skiing events from Garmisch to Ruhpolding.

Apart from Kazakhstan's Almaty, there have not been any other official candidacies yet but more are expected with Poland, Ukraine, Spain, China and Norway among those considering a bid. Oslo residents voted in favor of a bid earlier this month.

Newly-elected International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach was among the 2018 bid leaders for Munich and his influence could prove vital though it is unclear how willing fellow IOC members would be to opt for Germany again after electing him earlier this month.
