World Cup failure could cost Mexico millions say businesses

MEXICO CITY | Thu Oct 31, 2013 8:43pm EDT

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico businesses could lose as much as $650 million if the country fails to beat New Zealand in their World Cup soccer playoff and qualify for the 2014 finals in Brazil, according to sports marketing expert Rogelio Roa.

Mexico face New Zealand at the Azteca on November 13 and in Wellington a week later in a two-leg intercontinental playoff for one berth at the 2014 finals.

Miguel Herrera, whose club team America are Mexican league champions, was handed the reins as Mexico's fourth coach in less than two months after his predecessors failed to see the team through as expected from the CONCACAF qualifiers.

"Without a doubt we'll be going to the World Cup. The (FMF) has trusted in this duo who have worked well this year," the optimistic Herrera said after his team beat Finland 4-2 in a friendly in San Diego on Wednesday, referring to himself and America's sporting director Ricardo Pelaez.

However, the possibility of not qualifying for the Brazil tournament deeply worries Mexico's football association (FMF) and media, mainly television networks in Mexico and the United States which have broadcasting rights, and companies who sponsor the national team and businesses who see a rise in sales throughout the year when the World Cup is held.

Roa, Director General of DreaMatch Solutions which specializes in sports marketing, said Mexico's absence from the World Cup would have a financial impact on the entire national soccer industry.

"On the sporting and totally commercial side, Mexico's failure to take part entails, and I'm probably being a bit drastic here, but in terms of the football economy a financial catastrophe because it would have a domino effect that would have an effect on the Mexican league, lower sponsorship entries and brand prestige," Roa told Reuters TV.

Roa estimated that impact could total $650 million because business surrounding the World Cup has grown exponentially over the years, particularly since they have been at every World Cup finals since 1986, apart from 1990 when they were banned for fielding over-age players in the World Youth Cup.

"It's a scenario nobody has forecast, nobody did," Roa added. "The last time Mexico failed to reach the World Cup was in 1990.

"It was not due to a sporting reason but due to an executive decision but in the end it's not even comparable because football at an economic and commercial level today has nothing to do with what it was 23 years ago."

Brazil's ambassador in Mexico, Marcos Leal Raposo trusts Mexico will qualify and admitted World Cup organizers were interested in having Mexico there, taking into account the high number of Mexican fans expected at the tournament.

"We expect 600,000 foreign tourists of which 50,000 could be Mexicans," he said.

"Mexico is the country that sends the most passionate soccer fans to the World Cup in the world.

"We are together supporting the team so that the team reaches the World Cup finals due to friendship and commercial interests, please."

Some companies are still confident Mexico will qualify and have not halted or changed their marketing and sales strategies, with the team's apparel sponsor already launching the jerseys Mexico would use during the World Cup.

Players wore the new strip during their last two CONCACAF qualifiers.

"I'm going to be very honest. It would be speculation because right now (elimination) is not the case," said Emilio Trabulse, Marketing Director for Grupo Marti, a sporting company with 230 stores nationwide.

"If on November 20 Mexico goes through and that's how it will be, we will continue with everything as normal.

"If for any reason, it doesn't happen, then we'll have to sit down to see what we'll do with the national team products."

Roshfrans, which markets an oil lubricant for vehicles, has shown optimism poking fun at the team's position with street advertisements reading: "Eliminated? We are only putting our nerves to the test" and "Typical of Mexicans, everything left to the last minute."

Horseracing - Ron the Greek scratched from Breeders' Classic
Oct 31st 2013, 23:31

Thu Oct 31, 2013 7:31pm EDT

(Reuters) - Ron the Greek, the morning line choice for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, was scratched from the race on Thursday because of a hoof injury, his Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has said.

"Unfortunately, we're going to have to scratch him," Mott said in a statement. "He had an abscess that broke open in his foot.

"It's not a major problem, but it's all a matter of timing and he won't be able to run on Saturday."

Ron the Greek was fourth in the 2012 Classic and was in good form having produced a smashing effort on September 28 to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.

The five-year-old has won nine career races, including two this year.

The abscess in his right front foot was discovered on Wednesday.

"When he came out to walk is the first we recognized any problem," said Mott, who won the 1995 Breeders' Cup Classic with Cigar and the 2011 race with Drosselmeyer. "That horse has been doing fine. He's never had foot issues before in his life.

"He had a strong gallop yesterday and he must have just bumped the heel of his foot wrong and he got an abscess in the bulb of his heel.

"We soaked him and it opened up and relieved some of the pressure late yesterday afternoon but he was still sore on it this morning and I just made the determination that we couldn't have him good enough to run on Saturday."

Cuadrado furor highlights refereeing dilemma

Thu Oct 31, 2013 7:54am EDT

(Reuters) - Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado's sending-off against Napoli after he was twice booked for diving highlighted the difficulties referees face when they have to decide whether a player is play-acting or has been genuinely fouled.

Fiorentina fans were livid after television replays appeared to show that Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler made contact with the Colombian's shin in stoppage time of Napoli's 2-1 Serie A win.

One fan posted a photograph on Twitter showing the exact moment when Inler made contact with Cuadrado.

The penalty was not given and Cuadrado, already booked for simulation, was sent off.

But there was a far wider context on which referee Gianpaolo Calvarese would have based his decision.

Without the aid of replays, Cuadrado's fall, in which he lifted both legs off the ground and fell forward, looked like a dive rather than a natural tumble caused by a kick on the shin.

That could have been decisive because referees often make their decisions based on the way the player goes down rather than the split second in which contact, often minimal, is made.

"Sometimes, when there is a small contact, it's easy to whistle but if the player makes it look worse, it makes it look like simulation," Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers told Reuters during a UEFA event in September.

"The way a player goes down is very, very important. So players should not over-react when there is a foul ... That is sometimes why there is not a good decision."

Furthermore, Fiorentina players appeared to make several attempts to win penalties in the game.

Cuadrado himself had already been booked for a clear dive in the area earlier in the second half so he could hardly have been surprised that the referee had second thoughts about awarding a penalty later on.

His team mate Giuseppe Rossi was also booked for diving in the second half after hooking his foot around an opponent's outstretched leg and then throwing himself to the ground.

NEW TECHNIQUES

In addition, Calvarese had already awarded Fiorentina a highly controversial penalty in the first half and may well have discovered at halftime that he had made the wrong decision.

Spanish referee Alberto Undiano told Reuters recently that the referees were well aware of the new techniques players have adopted.

"Before, the simulation was like a dive into a swimming pool but today there are situations where the player trains how to provoke contact," he said.

"You see the contact but it's not always simple to see who provoked this contact."

"Simulation is increasingly hidden, like doping. There are products which hide doping and in simulation the same happens, there are ways of making simulation difficult to detect for the referee, it's one of the most difficult things we have to do."

Fiorentina president Andrea Della Valle said the referee "lacked courage" to give the penalty, although the opposite appeared to be the case as the official was brave enough to repeatedly turn down appeals from the home team.

"This referee is young, but at the 91st minute I need someone to explain to me why they didn't give that penalty. Maybe he's a bit young and inexperienced, so lacked courage," he said.

In England, diving is seen as a heinous crime, whereas in Italy it is almost accepted as part of the game, with criticism mostly reserved for referees when they get a decision wrong.

To his credit, Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella refused to follow his president's example.

"It's a shame, but if we just focus on one incident then we ignore a great performance from Fiorentina," he told Sky Sport Italia. "I am extremely satisfied with the way we played. We kept Napoli back and forced them to focus only on counter-attacks."

Cuadrado, meanwhile, was left to contemplate his suspension at the weekend when he will miss the game against AC Milan.

BERLIN | Thu Oct 31, 2013 6:54am EDT

BERLIN (Reuters) - If statistics are anything to go by then Borussia Dortmund are set to reclaim the Bundesliga top spot from Bayern Munich when they take on VfB Stuttgart on Friday.

Last season's runners-up have not lost a home game on a Friday in nine years and given their current form, second-placed Dortmund have every right to eye a return to the top with leaders Bayern not in action until Saturday.

With just one defeat in 10 league games so far, Dortmund (25 points) have quickly found their stride this season as they again challenge the Bavarians for domestic bragging rights.

But coach Juergen Klopp warned against any complacency as they had not beaten Stuttgart in their last four home games.

"It will not be an easy game," Klopp told reporters. "We have to be prepared for everything against Stuttgart. It will be tough.

"They have a lot of quality and are having a good run at the moment and when they switch to attack they can be really tricky to handle."

Klopp, who this week extended his contract by two years to 2018, committing his immediate future to a club he led to consecutive titles from 2011, could have captain Sebastian Kehl back in the squad after the player returned to training on Wednesday following a lengthy injury absence.

FINE EXPECTED

"What that means for Friday, I still do not know," Klopp added. "We have to see how he reacts but I am just very happy that he is back."

Klopp will, however, be without midfielder Ilkay Guendogan and defender Luasz Piszczek, who are still recovering from injuries and will not be fit enough to play on Friday.

Dortmund will also have one eye on the stands after their own fans hurled flares onto the pitch and into rival Schalke 04 enclosures in their 3-1 derby win last week and the club now face a likely fine.

Stuttgart have gone on a seven-game unbeaten run since coach Thomas Schneider replaced Bruno Labbadia early in the season, climbing back into European contention in eighth place. They have, however, drawn their last three matches.

In-form forward Vedad Ibisevic has not scored more goals against any other Bundesliga team than Dortmund with six but Schneider is likely to be without injured defender Daniel Schwaab.

"We have to be quick on our feet, act quickly and move the ball," Schneider said. "The way we change from defense to going forward will be the key to this game.

"We do not have to apologize to anyone for our last three straight draws," he said.

Bayern, top of the standings on 26 points, travel to improving Hoffenheim while third-placed Bayer Leverkusen, level on 25 points with Dortmund, meet bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig.

McIlroy finds form to surge clear of WGC field

SHANGHAI | Thu Oct 31, 2013 6:19am EDT

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy enjoyed one of his best rounds of a disappointing season to storm into a two-shot lead over a star-studded field at the $8.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions tournament on Thursday.

Displaying a deft short game with a new lob wedge, McIlroy reeled off eight birdies en route to a first round seven-under-par 65 at the World Golf Championship event in Sheshan.

Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Welshman Jamie Donaldson are tied for second on five-under, one ahead of a group of four players that includes American prospect Jordan Spieth and Briton Justin Rose.

After cruising along nicely for 16 holes, British Open champion and two-time winner of this event Phil Mickelson looked primed to challenge McIlroy's lead until he suffered a dramatic late-round meltdown to fall off the pace.

The left-hander dropped four strokes at the par-five eighth, his 17th, where he twice found the pond in front of the green, and also dropped a shot at the ninth after pulling his second into the water for a one-under 71.

McIlroy, on the other hand, had no such misadventures with his only dropped shot coming on the 11th hole, his second of the round.

"It's only one round but it's definitely the way I wanted and needed to start this week," said the two-time major champion, who was ranked number one in the world as recently as March but has yet to record a victory this season.

However, refreshed after a recent four-week break and armed with a new driver and new ball, the world number six looked to have rediscovered the swagger that carried him to order of merit titles on the European and PGA Tours a year ago.

His improvement was not readily apparent in his tie for 27th at last week's BMW Masters, also played in Shanghai, but when he beat Tiger Woods in an exhibition on Monday, his timing and demeanor around the course looked like the McIlroy of old.

UNDER CONTROL

"Last week I wasn't reading the greens very well and my pace was off as well and when you have that combination you're not going to hole any putts," he said

"I let a couple of putts get away from me today - a couple of the downhill ones - but I was able to hole the ones coming back.

"And with the irons, I pretty much had the ball under control all day. I hit a couple of loose drives but it's one of the best rounds I've played (this year).

"I shot 64 at Boston (Deutsche Bank Championship) but this is probably better because of a little trickier conditions."

McIlroy is a surprising 62nd on the European Tour's Race to Dubai. Only the top 60 qualify for the season-ending event in a fortnight, so he is not quite guaranteed a spot yet, but has made a huge step in the right direction.

"I obviously want to play myself into Dubai and pick up my first win of the season," he said.

Fernandez-Castano, meanwhile, continued the form that carried him to victory at the BMW Masters on Sunday.

"I was feeling a little tired on Tuesday but I guess it's normal after all the adrenaline rush," he said. "I was feeling a little tired but I wasn't in the pro-am yesterday so I took a good rest and I'm feeling 100 percent."

Donaldson is also feeling refreshed after suffering from jet-lag last week.

"I didn't sleep great last week but I'm fully acclimatized now so there are no excuses," said Donaldson, who eagled the par-four 16th after driving the green.

Boston bond and beards drive Red Sox to triumph

BOSTON | Thu Oct 31, 2013 2:53am EDT

BOSTON (Reuters) - Red Sox manager John Farrell said a special connection struck between his players and the city of Boston helped them achieve their ultimate goal of a World Series title on Wednesday.

A team carefully patched together and dedicated to bouncing back from a last-place finish in 2012 bonded in an emotional partnership with a city on the mend after April's deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon.

"In a time of need, in response to a tragedy, I go back to our players understanding their place in this city," Farrell said after Wednesday's 6-1 victory at Fenway Park clinched a 4-2 World Series triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals.

"For lack of a better way to describe it, they get it. They get that there's, I think, a civil responsibility that we have wearing this uniform, particularly here in Boston."

Farrell said the spirit began to grow when players reached out to individuals who had suffered in the tragedy and made hospital visits to bring cheer and comfort to the hundreds of wounded.

"I think our fans, they got to a point where they appreciated the way we played the game, how they cared for one another," the manager said. "And in return they gave these guys an incredible amount of energy to thrive on in this ballpark.

"I'm sure that everybody in our uniform ... they'll look back on the events that took place and the way things unfolded as a special year. There's no way we can say it any other way."

Farrell, pitching coach on the Boston team that won the 2007 World Series, left his managing job with the Toronto Blue Jays to return to the Red Sox and help turn around the team.

In concert with general manager Ben Cherington, he set about adding veteran players with past playoff success -- such as Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Jonny Gomes and David Ross -- to the mix.

"We felt there was a very good core group of players here, that finished last year with injuries, and a number of returning players that were driven and motivated to rewrite their own story," Farrell said.

"There was a tremendous feeling of embarrassment here a year ago, and guys came into spring training determined."

With Gomes and Napoli leading the way, the team began promoting their brotherhood by growing bushy beards and soon just about the whole team had throw away their razors.

The easy-going spirit of the team, epitomized by slugger David "Big Papi" Ortiz, took hold, but then came the serious business of helping a city heal from the Boston Marathon attack.

"It just so happened we were dealing with a tragedy at the same time," Farrell said about the team finding its identity.

"Their want and willingness to connect with the fans in the city here, we were thrust into that, so it sped it all up very quickly.

"I think as an organization we couldn't be any more proud with the way they responded."

BOSTON | Thu Oct 31, 2013 2:04am EDT

BOSTON (Reuters) - Fenway Park is an unforgiving place for losers. No-one knows that better than the Boston Red Sox.

They went 86 years between World Series victories until they broke their drought in 2004. On Wednesday, they clinched their first title at home since 1918, the last year Babe Ruth was with the team before being traded to the New York Yankees.

A resounding 6-1 defeat, and 4-2 best-of-seven series loss, meant it was the St. Louis Cardinals who were left with the empty feeling of falling at the final hurdle in the quest for baseball's biggest prize.

As the home crowd sang Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline", a Fenway favorite, the visitors retreated to the locker room to dwell on what might have been.

"I think the floodgates opened," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told reporters.

"I told them to hold their heads high. They have nothing to be ashamed of. We all know that we could come out and play a better game than what we did here, but we did a whole lot more than anybody gave us credit for or expected us to do.

"There's a lot of things that they can look on in a negative way, but this isn't the time for it. They have to be very proud how they represented themselves, each other and this organization."

After beating the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers to win the National League championship, the Cardinals arrived at the World Series confident of winning, despite fielding a relatively inexperienced team.

Their roster included nine rookies and a battery of fearless young pitchers. But the suffocating pressure of the World Series is no place for the faint hearted and the team made a string of errors that cost them dearly.

NO BLAME

But Matheny, who played catcher for the Cardinals team that lost the 2004 World Series to the Red Sox, said there was no point casting the blame.

"You're asking guys to do some very extraordinary things when you ask them to do what they've been doing all season long," he said.

"They were some frustrated guys in there, but overall you can't ask us to go about any better than how our guys did. I couldn't be any more proud of how they handled themselves, how they carried themselves and how they competed.

"We had a couple of games that just didn't look real characteristic offensively. But we did have a little trouble, but overall this team was very consistent all the way through."

While conceding that the disappointment of defeat would take a while to subside, Matheny did point to a rosy future for a club that has already won 11 World Series, the most recent two years ago.

"We've got a lot of young players out there. There's a lot of things to be excited about moving forward," he said.

"As we looked through the season, and we'll start doing that tonight, kind of reviewing what we were able to accomplish, we had plenty of adversity.

"Plenty of things we had to overcome. And they did it in a style that represented the organization well, the way they played and didn't back off one second of the way they prepared.

"It was a relentless team, and I think that's a way to label them. And I'm very proud to be a part of them."

Raptors down Celtics to snap opening night drought

TORONTO | Thu Oct 31, 2013 1:35am EDT

TORONTO (Reuters) - The Toronto Raptors finally sent an opening night crowd home with a smile and a win when they held on to beat the Boston Celtics 93-87 to raise the curtain on a new National Basketball Association season on Wednesday.

Rudy Gay had 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds to pace the Raptors while Amir Johnson and DeMar DeRozan each chipped in with 13 as Toronto ended a run of three straight home opening losses.

"It was the first game of the season and we're coming off a whole week without playing," Gay said.

"So I think we were a little rusty at the beginning. We shook the rust off and came back."

The loss was the first of what is expected to be many for the Celtics after they dismantled their team in the wake last year's first round playoff exit by trading away Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce - the last two members of the Big Three who had led them to two NBA finals and one title.

The Celtics fielded a lineup of unfamiliar names and Jeff Green led the scoring with a game high 25 points, while Brandon Bass added 17 and Brazilian Vitor Faverani 13.

"We had some sloppy moments but a lot of them were out of effort," said Celtics first-year coach Brad Stevens.

"A lot of them while we were flying down the court at two levels too fast and we made a few errors.

"But you know you can live with a few errors like that, you can live with errors when you are playing hard."

Celtics supporters can only hope they will not be tested in the same way Raptors fans have since the last time the franchise made the playoffs in 2008.

For a moment on Wednesday it was as if nothing had changed, the Celtics raced to 6-0 lead to take the buzz out of the opening night festivities even before the smoke from the pre-game pyrotechnics had lifted from the court.

But by the half the party was back in full swing at a soldout Air Canada Centre with the Raptors comfortably ahead 49-37.

A third quarter fight back saw the Celtics erase a 16 point Toronto lead to pull level at 71-71 and keep things interesting through the fourth but it was Toronto celebrating the win.

"We fought," said Green. "We fought, it didn't matter how many we were down.

"We tied the game and then we took the lead. But we had a few costly turnovers that set us back. But as long as we keep fighting I think we'll be in a lot of games."
