LYTHAM ST ANNES (Reuters) - Adam Scott birdied the last hole to complete a second-round 67 and tuck in just one shot behind leader Brandt Snedeker at the British Open on Friday.

The Australian, who led overnight following a superb 64, dropped a shot at the third hole but birdies at the seventh, 10th and 11th repaired the damage and his final flourish left him on nine under par and within touching distance of the surprise American pacesetter.

"Very pleased with the round today," the world number 13 told reporters. "Again, a bit of a slow start but built my momentum from seven onwards and played fairly well from there.

"I didn't take on any unnecessary risks and kept the ball in play pretty well. It was kind of stress free but certainly felt good out there today and something to build on for the weekend."

Scott, 32, is seeking his first major title.
